The ad is in celebration of the TNT special and contains rave press reviews. Oddly enough, at the bottom of the ad it says "Ah, the power of cheese" (National Dairy Farmers were one of the sponsors). If you are near a newstand, you might want to take a look at it (pages 16 & 17). In the same issue, BSN is 90 on the top 200 albums chart, and 14 on the internet sales chart. On the next chart, already posted on Billboard's website, she is off the internet chart (under #20, Neil Young's new Silver & Gold is #1) and below #100 on the albums chart. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 May 2000 09:20:41 -0700 (PDT) From: zapuppy2@webtv.net (Penny) Subject: Re: Musica con Queso Covers If connections aren't made while Joni is on tour, you could always fall back on plan "B" later, and get a set to one of us going to the Mendel, to give them to her there. Always on the lookout for JM 8tracks, I only have one - a fragile (read:bad) CAS, I just received from an eBay sale, an 8Track Tape titled Best of Joni Mitchell. It contains: Michael From The Mountains (STAS) Night In the City (STAS) Marcie (STAS) Nathan La Franeer (STAS) Sisotowbell Lane (STAS) Cactus Tree (STAS) Both Sides, Now (C) The Gallery (C) I Don't Know Where I Stand (C) Tin Angel (C) That Song About the Midway (C) Songs to Aging Children Come (C) It's an odd one. Covered in silver paper, very plain. No artwork, just words. No date anywhere but is under the label Athena with an Atlanta address. There is this little disclaimer: Notices of intention to use copyrighted material filed where necessary. All required statutory royalties paid by Omega Sales, Inc. I knew JM always (before Hits/Misses) said a greatest hits album would be the kiss of death for her catalogue. So, I know she had nothing to do with this. How could such a product be made? Think she got paid? Is it illegal? BTW, the sound quality is very good (for an 8Track). Also, BTW, I paid $5 (the most I have ever payed for any 8Track) and was the only bidder, I believe. No regrets, Coyote Casa Alegre Hollywood, California I'll be dancin' on a pony keg. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 May 2000 11:13:27 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: TNT Tribute - late as usual - and a request If you don't want to read through all of this, fine, but please take a look at the last paragraph. Thank you! I have a confession to make. The night the TNT tribute first aired I stayed up until about the time of Cassandra Wilson's performance of Drycleaner. That was about 10:30 and I had to go to work the next morning so I left the VCR running & went to bed. Last night I finally watched the entire show from beginning to end for the first time (Travis has the tv on almost all the time & getting a 2 hour block of time for myself isn't always easy). I know it's been discussed and discussed and is now pretty much a dead issue but has that ever stopped me from posting before? Not likely. Just a few thoughts. I liked Bryan Adams contribution to Raised on Robbery. It gave the song a kind of rough & raunchy edge. Kinda like that 'son-of-a-bitch' that drank up all the rest of that money was singing part of the song. People commented that Wynonna's rendition of You Turn Me On and k d's Help Me sounded tentative or strained. Some even said they were trying to sing over & above their respective ranges. I certainly didn't hear that in Wynonna's YTMOIAR & I kind of got the feeling with k d that her vocal should have been turned up a notch or too. My chief impression was that both of these singers could have belted these songs out (both have very powerful voices) and completely annihilated any sense of the delicacy of the melodies. Instead they chose to respect that delicacy and sing them with more subtlety. k d's Help Me had a sensuality & seductiveness to it that Joni only hints at in the original. Wynonna could have made YTMO a completely twangy country song but instead chose to preserve the original idea of a parody of a country song. Cyndi Lauper was one of the best performances of the evening, imo. Beautifully sung and I loved what Klein was doing with the bass. The wind truly seemed to be blowing up from Africa on that one. I completely agree with whoever it was that said that Richard Thompson's Woodstock had a Celtic feel to it. It sounded like a troubadour singing his account of this great event in a village somewhere in the British Isles. I liked the fact that his rendition of Black Crow had a nice edge to it and that it moved with the same restless energy of the original. He certainly injected both songs with a heavy dose of testosterone & I don't think that's at all a bad thing for either of them. James was very touching in his rendition of River. He did indeed make it his own. But that's not such a bad thing either. I agree that Elton might have done better with a different song. This performance along with one or two others could have done with a bit of a punched up tempo or something. The energy of the original just wasn't there. Two Grey Rooms would have been interesting.... M C Carpenter & Shawn Colvin's Chelsea Morning/Big Yellow Taxi had nice harmonies and they sang them very prettily. Again, I think they could have speeded these two up a bit. The joyous exuberance that Joni brought to them just wasn't there. They certainly did a lovely version of 'Amelia'. Cassandra Wilson didn't seem to really take off until the end of Drycleaner. But the last part of it smoked. I thought Sweet Honey in the Rock's rendition of Circle Game was wonderful. The theme of the song seemed to lend itself quite well to this African interpretation. Joni had to have been pleased with that one. The harmonies were exquisite. Diana Kral. Wow. Outside of Joni's performance, I thought that was the most gut-wrenching, honest and amazing performance of the evening. Someone said she slurred her words and sounded like a drunk. They must have been watching a different performance. Diana looked liked she was deep inside of herself somewhere when she sang A Case of You and judging by what came out I think that must have been the case. Joni was listening with eyes closed as if Diana had taken her along to the same place. Kral certainly proved that she can tackle a beautiful song & plumb it to the profound depths that Joni points the way to. She's going to be at the Ste Michelle winery this summer. I think I want to go see her. What can you say about Joni? (And I've already said what I thought about Hillary.) I am so thrilled that I will be seeing her perform BSN live next Saturday with Leslie & Steve Mixon. All in all I thought they did a fine job with the show. Very heartfelt & well written with good performers doing their best. I do wish they had come further forward in Joni's catalogue but I kind of expected what we got. On an unrelated note, I'm going to ask for your good thoughts & prayers for my mother. She recently had a lump removed from her breast that is cancerous. They seem to have caught it fairly early and the prognosis is good. The cancer had not radiated at the site. Next Wednesday she will have lymph nodes from her armpit examined to see if there is anything there. Please send a positive thought her way if you think about it. She is 77 years old and my father is pretty much dependent on her these days. She will be having radiation somewhere down the line. When I first read Sara's post I thought "Hits" or "Misses" would be the obvious choice, but after reading Paul and Bob's posts, I have to go with "Court & Spark" too. My favorite Joni album changes from month to month, but C&S was the album that turned me on to Joni. It may have been *mainstream* to the public, but it served it's purpose well as far as *this* JMDLer is concerned. When I met my partner Ed back in college, this is the album that we both LOVED! When the compact disc player first came out, C&S was the very first CD that we purchased. As Bob said, C& S doesn't sound *dated* at all. (There are a few other Joni albums I would enter into this category too) I think that this album is such a good choice for a first time listener. It's so crisp sounding and each song just flows to the next. But hey, what do I know! Jimmy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 May 2000 21:58:45 -0700 From: susan+rick Subject: Re: advice? My humble advice, since we don't know what tastes your boyfriend has, is to play him Hits and if he likes any of the cuts on it, then go to that album for the full-meal deal. But if you don't have Hits I personally don't recommend Court and Spark. I find it a bit too middle-of-the-road in a seventies sort of way. Maybe it's the L.A. Express or something. Anyway I vote for either For the Roses or Hejira if Hits is not possible.
