Jazz inflections helped shape such classic Mitchell works as Court and Spark and The Hissing of Summer Lawns. Mitchell, who has recorded with jazz saxophonists Tom Scott and Wayne Shorter, collaborated most famously with bassist Charles Mingus just before his death in 1979. Here, she releases a collection that traces the rise and fall of a romantic relationship mainly through jazz standards. The conceit partly justifies arranger Vince Mendoza's sumptuous backing. He employs an oversized orchestra with such luminaries as Shorter and pianist Herbie Hancock occasionally in the foreground. Following old habits, Mitchell begins to find tragedy by the third tune, "Comes Love," and continues plumbing love's sad side for nine more songs. It seems almost a source of inspiration that Mitchell's talented ex-husband, Larry Klein, coproduced the session. Mitchell is gutsy even to attempt some songs, such as "Stormy Weather." Too often, though, she sounds like Billie Holiday and Betty Carter. Mitchell also seems more careful and controlled than on her free-flowing Mingus collaboration. The studied feel is too pronounced. But the large orchestral pieces lodge in the mind and become oddly haunting. Mitchell, now 56, spins these slow tunes from rich experience. She reinterprets only two originals, "A Case of You" from her epic Blue album and the title track, a reverent reworking with lavish strings that still produces goose bumps. The settings seem too Sinatraesque - - sometimes Both Sides Now sounds like a film noir soundtrack - but Mitchell is among the best jazz singers outside jazz. - Karl Stark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 May 2000 23:04:30 +0100 From: catman Subject: Re: - River / Travis I saw travis on tv the other night but he was just one blonde young man with a lovely smile and a good voice. perhaps he just gave the band the night off. I won't be manipulated by some media savvy mogul! There really isn't anything new about this. As long as there's been rock & roll there's been teeny-bopper, bubble-gum whatever you want to call innocuous pop music that's designed to sell to teenagers. Remember the Monkees? Or how about Shelley Fabares, Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon? Or any one of a number of teen idol personalities who were sort of thrust into the recording industry & then onto the young record buying public. Were they great, creative, innovative musical artists? No. Did many of us embrace them & buy all their records? Hell yes! And when you come to think of it 'She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah', 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' and 'Little Surfer Girl' ain't exactly what you'd call deep, either. Every generation has it's share of pop culture garbage. Why should we deny the latest one theirs? From Joni's point of view, I think she does have a bit of a right to rant about some of the people that get compared to her. But then Joni's so far ahead of almost anybody in the business that it's really unfair to compare anybody to her. I have from time to time written less than flattering things about Madonna & Michael Yarborough & others have faithfully defended her. I'm not about to change my opinion of 'Maddy' but I do think there is a certain amount of generational prejudice toward some of today's popular music present on this list. Rap, hip-hop - how many of us over 40 would even bother to try & really listen to any of it? For me a lot of this has to do with not really being all that interested in music that appeals to teens or 20 somethings. That part of my life is over & done. But I don't think we can completely dismiss what younger people are listening to and say it's all bad, either. And don't we all love to hear the music that was popular when we were in high school? And not all of that was classic stuff, imo. Mark in Seattle ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 May 2000 21:30:11 EDT From: CaTGirl627@aol.com Subject: Re: bad music. What's funny about this is that if you asked any girl between 5 and 13 (when the Spice Girls were in their prime) what they liked about Spice, the girls replied that it was about girl power. Now I'm not defending the pop machine, but I will say that the message resonated with alot of young girls (I worked on both Spice projects so I'm speaking from experience). It gave them confidence. I turned my nose up at it at first, (caring more about Massive Attack and Ben Harper) then I learned what it meant to these young girls. I'm sure other teen pop acts resonate somehow with pre-teens like the girls I met. Let's just hope that they get exposed to musicians like Joni as they grow up. It'll only reinforce what they already know.
