I haven't noticed any other replies to this so yes, Helen - she did; I was at her concert in the (old) Wellington Town Hall (with an excellent seat just front of stage on the balcony). Lots of "Wild Things Run Fast" songs - not much piano during the evening although "Chinese Cafe" I remember as being sublime. Larry Klein on bass. It was a big ticket item for a poor varsity student but worth every cent. Can't remember what else she did in NZ, sorry, although I vaguely recollect a Listener write-up of a somewhat fractious interview. So now you know.... Well, I loved the performances they did have. I mean, I certainly wouldn't have wanted them to ignore the 70s! But, I love love love TWO GREY ROOMS! My god, that song! I think performing at least a few of her more recent songs like TWO GREY ROOMS and THE MAGDALENE LAUNDRIES would have opened some of the fans eyes who were there thinking she hasn't produced since the 70s. You know, these people do exist. They only know what the radio tells them. If a singer isn't on the radio at all, they tend to forget these artists exist. dax > -----Original Message----- > From: Susan McNamara [SMTP:sem8@cornell.edu] > Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2000 3:30 PM > To: joni@smoe.org > Subject: RE: Joni Tribute - What happened to the '80s and '90s? > > I think if Sir Elton had decided to do Two Grey Rooms instead of Free > Man in Paris he would have blown the place away. > > This brings me back to the "Joni is Hard" issue. I've met her on a few occasions and she is a very lovely lady. She is one of those performers who is a delight to watch. She really gets into the music and is a great interpreter, be it Joni, Sondheim, Brecht or Rogers/Hart. FYI, Betty wrote "If I Remember You". Stephen I also supplied the Ethel Ennis--all I know is that she is an old jazz singer who has been kicking around for years and this cut comes from a CD that was released about a year or two ago. When Sergio was first recording for A&M, record company co-owner Herb Alpert fell for Lani and they have been married now for over 30 years. She did several solo albums in the 70s and 80s and I love her voice. (Although I think she went a little over the top with the Joni songs!). Susan Webb is Jimmy's little sister and he helped her produce two albums in the 70s. She is a rabid Joni fan and also covered Big Yellow Taxi, I believe. She also sings back-up vocals with David Crosby on Joni's "Down to You" from "Court and Spark". Out of morbid curiosity, I recently did a search on the Article section of the new-and-improved JMDL site (great job, by the way, Les!) on "New Zealand". It brought back one article from 1982, which said that Joni toured here, or intended touring here in 1983 - the text is as follows: "She's presently in the midst of preparing for an extensive tour?her first in three years? which kicks off in Japan in February, takes her through New Zealand, Australia, Europe and concludes in America in mid-'83" Does anyone know if this tour took place, and if so, did Joni make it to NZ? I have to confess that I hadn't really discovered Joni at this point (I was 16) so have no memory from the press at the time. But I need to know, since I've always thought that Joni has never been here? Hell _______________________________ "I don't believe in livin' in the middle with available extremes" - Carole King hell@ihug.co.nz Hello, Well the answer is yes she did. In fact I was at the concert in Wellington! I think it was around April either 82 or 83 (so long ago). It was just after the WTRF album. We had hoped she would tour with the SAL band. She adopted an American Grafitti style show, with a rock and roll feel to the songs. She wore a big baseball jacket. Pretty cool anyway. My guess is that they were able to choose between 2 or 3 songs the producers (or whoever was "designing" the show) decided was suitable material for that particular performer. Of course, there may have been some exceptions, such as Cyndi Lauper insisting on doing Carey because it meant so much to her (I'm guessing here), or kd lang doing Help Me because she's done it for the tribute album and it's familiar to her. But it was obvious from the taped segments how much preparation had been done, and the actual show was so organized and IMO well designed, that I don't think much was left up to the performers. They probably showed up a day or two beforehand, did a few rehearsals, and then the show was on. > Of course, for the broadest popular appeal -- or to > get someone to stop channel surfing because they > recognize a tune -- songs from the 70s are best > because that was the decade when Joni had most of her > "hits." Yes, that makes sense. There's always the market share concern, that always-present tension between what's commercial and what's artistic. My wish list for a fuller tribute includes some happy love songs, like Solid Love and Night Ride Home, so that all the people who think Joni does only dreary, in-romantic-distress songs could hear another side of her. > I dig Cassy's suggestion that there might be a sequel! I like the sequel suggestion, too, especially since the show ended so abruptly with Mingus. I'd lost track of time and was waiting for it to just keep on going. I remember wondering how they were going to present DED, and was looking forward to NRH, and especially to hearing something from TTT done on non-VG-8 instruments (pure fantasy about that last one -- I wasn't THAT out of it timewise). I think the fact that the newest song was from 1979 shows how complex her work is. It's taken that long for her "early" work to be appreciated and absorbed by enough people to make a nationwide production possible. Just hope it's not a 20-year wait until the tribute that covers her 1980-2000 years. For starters playing "Sunny Sunday" is so much fun. I also love playing "Yevette in English". They are FUN for me so I don't know you would say that.
