Out of morbid curiosity, I recently did a search on the Article section of the new-and-improved JMDL site (great job, by the way, Les!) on "New Zealand". It brought back one article from 1982, which said that Joni toured here, or intended touring here in 1983 - the text is as follows: "She's presently in the midst of preparing for an extensive tour—her first in three years— which kicks off in Japan in February, takes her through New Zealand, Australia, Europe and concludes in America in mid-'83" Does anyone know if this tour took place, and if so, did Joni make it to NZ? I have to confess that I hadn't really discovered Joni at this point (I was 16) so have no memory from the press at the time. But I need to know, since I've always thought that Joni has never been here? I know not everyone is as stupid as me, but I thought it would make a good trivia question! What song, other than the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody" does Joni sing line/s from in Chinese Cafe (WTRF), and what specifically links Joni to the song? Let's see how clever everyone is! Actually, now that I think about it, it's probably REALLY obvious, and I've been even more stupid asking the question! I try to picture it, how it was for her, coming from Canada and moving there, that being your first hometown area in the US... I also lived in that same area in a commune in those days and I know the neighborhood well. imagine... 'fleeing' her country in a 'salt-rusted carriage', an old VW bus I think it was, a pregnant art student from Montreal, and landing right smack in the heart of Detroit... as for the music, well... not only was motown the land of Smokey and Marvin and Stevie but let's not forget Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes and Bob Segar and the Last Hurd... as I said, I don't doubt that she went through that period before I met her and Chuck in '66 and yes, did the trad songs as well... but I think I am talking about the same thing... that melencholy Irish flavor influenced a lot of the folk music of the time as I discussed. I know so well because, having started out at the age of 15 in the coffeehouses, I was one of those folksingers who couldn't write a song of my own to save my life and who's repetoire was completely dependent upon choosing the songs that would 'fly' so, believe me, I know what you mean and what she was talking about. I'm glad if I prompted you to dig this quote up and post it... excellent post, phil! it is one of the best insights I've seen regarding her early development as a songwriter and, like you, as one of the happy recipients of her rich, beautiful art, I, for one, shall always be grateful for those trad songs and those motown songs... and streets... and all the things that helped shape her creative attitude. pat On Thu, 27 Apr 2000 12:26:27 philipf wrote: >Pat >sorry, I didn't send you the full quote. Hi all, I just realized that the tribute show "history" parts ended with Mingus. Well, I realized this a while back and didn't react to it. Anyway, was this just editing for the TV version? I mean, Joni produced in the '80s and the '90s. I, for one, got hooked on Joni first with NIGHT RIDE HOME and she won a Grammy for TURBULENT INDIGO. My point is, why were these parts in Joni's life ignored in the Tribute. Yes, they showed some of the album covers and some of the songs were played in the background, but there was no mentioning of it. On top of that, nothing past the '70s was performed. Anyone have any ideas! thanks dax ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2000 07:55:04 -0700 (PDT) From: Don Rowe Subject: Re: Joni Tribute - What happened to the '80s and '90s? Dear Dax, After reading the endless volumes of pooh-pooh e-mail about the 80s material, decrying everything from the synths, to the layered density of the production, to her permanent wave, Joni and I decided it would be best to not tempt fate and leave well enough alone when it came Tribute time. In an interesting twist of fate, Santana and Shania expressed interest in performing Tom Petty's and Billy Idol's roles in "Dancin' Clown" ... but since we really felt we had to have Edie Brickell on lead vocals, and she wasn't available, the number was shelved. In retrospect, I think you'll see the wisdom of our decision ... it was not taken lightly. Thanks for realizing that we did, in fact, make music in the 80s and 90s. Hi Larry, Well, I certainly don't think Joni and your music in the 80's and 90's needs validation. It speaks for itself. I'm 25. I heard of Joni Mitchell but never knew much about her until several years ago. One day I decided to buy an album just to see if I liked it. I bought NIGHT RIDE HOME because, at that time, it was the newest. I was blown away by the music, the vocals and the words. I thought they were wonderful. The next album I bought was DOG EAT DOG and, though it was remarkably different from NIGHT RIDE HOME, I still loved it. For one, it reminded me of my youth (remember, I basically grew up in the 80's). Secondly, the writing and music was fantastic (not the bubble-gum pop of today or that day). I especially love love love TAX FREE. Anyway, I was hooked after that. I started buying Joni's albums in the order in which they were released and within a month or so I had them all! I love everyone. I loved the fact that each album stood on it's own merits. I don't know of any other artist whose albums so differ from album to album. Most of the fans say, this or that is my favorite period. Well, this is very hard for me. When I'm listening to a Joni CD, that specific CD and time is my favorite at the moment. Myers and Pearl, especially, for helping me with tickets to Joni's West Palm Beach, FL show. With two discs yet to hear, I'd like to say again just how much I'm enjoying the Joni Covers, Vols. 1 and 2. They're some fantastic things on each of the discs I've listened to so far. If I had to pick *one* favorite, so far it would be Ethel Ennis' version of "For Free," but honorable mentions would go to Tim Curry, Betty Buckley's (who's she?) "A Case Of You," Sarah McLachlan, Barbra Streisand, and Annie Lenox. Plus, if you're a CSN fan, the live version of "Woodstock" from 1994 finds Stills really workin' hard...both vocally and on guitar. Two discs to go, with a lot of tasty-looking tracks to come! Btw...the orchestral arrangement on Streisand's version of "I Don't Know Where I Stand" reminded me of BSN. One of my *very* favorite early Joni songs, I think it would be great if Joni would add it to the concert setlist. It's right in keeping with the theme of the album (it could appear second, after "You're My Thrill"), and the arranger could cut a few corners, time-wise, by using the Streisand arrangement as a model. (Just a very late suggestion, Joni, if you're still looking for song ideas to augment your other originals.) :-) On the website last night, in the "Rarities" area, I noticed two things that I'm dying to know more about: 1) the acoustic demos of THOSL material, and 2) the sessions for Mingus, with different musicians than those on the actual album. What are these two "rarities" like? Are they great? Are they album length, or just a few tracks each? Anyway, any information and/or reviews would be appreciated. If these haven't been discussed lately, please post to the list for everyone to read. Thanks again for the kind welcome, everyone. He performed a "Case of You" live. I believe he performed this song live many times during that era. Has anybody else out there heard this version, or other Joni songs His Royal Badness might have covered. He even named the second album from his Funk outfit "The Time" (with fellow Minnesotans Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis) " Ice Cream Castles", without doubt picking Joni's thoughts about Clouds. I've managed to keep up with her through most of her changes/advances although I must confess I lost her a bit the mid-seventies before I eventually caught up again. Sadly, I've only ever seen her once in concert (in Japan on the WTRF tour) and UKTV doesn't do Joni tributes, but I feel I know her better than some people I see every day... That's not to say she doesn't continue to surprise and amaze! I don't drive, so find myself waiting for buses (this is England, remember) which invariably come late so what do I do to pass the time? Pick a Joni album and sing it track for track, word for word, with all the instrumental fills - as on 'Let the Wind Carry Me' for example - until the bus comes. Anyone else out there do this? So glad to find this list, though I'm terribly envious of all you who have access to so much more material. TTT is magical, I s'pose I play it most at present because it's her latest, though my all-time favourite has to be HOSL. Welcome to the list! I think you are going to have lots of fun--I know I have. I was delighted to hear that you liked the Betty Buckley cover of ACOY--I supplied this to Bob and it is one of my all time favorite covers of a Joni song. If you liked this cover, I will be very curious as to what you think of Betty's cover of "I Had A King". Betty Buckley is a singer/actress originally from TX. She moved to NY sometime in the late 60's or early 70's and landed her first B'way gig at her first audition. Betty is a big Joni fan, and one of her early audition songs was I Had A King. Betty began on Broadway in shows like Pippin, 1776 and then went to Hollywood and did "Eight Is Enough" on TV and some movies (the best being "Tender Mercies" with Robert Duvall--the movie was written by Horton Foote and in MHO is a must see). Anyway, Betty returned to Broadway in Cats (winning a Tony as best featured actress in a musical) and has continued to act on TV, film and movies. She made a huge splash in London a few years ago when she took over the lead in Sunset Blvd. (she is the only actress to ever be nominated for an Olivier award who did not originate the role). She then came back to NY and took over the role in Sunset and got rave reviews. I felt her performance was one of those rare performances when you know you are witness to something really great. During all of this time, Betty has been singing in clubs and cabarets (she sells out all the time in NY--she recently did a month gig here in NY at the Cafe Caryle of 2 shows a night 6 nights a week and got raves and packed houses). Anyway, Betty is a huge Joni fan and usually sings a Joni song or 2 in her shows. In her last show, she sang I Had A King, and introduced the song by telling of her love for Joni and how Joni wrote the soundtrack for her college years and then said something to the effect that Joni's music, for those that know Joni, is something that you live for and by. Betty is a wonderful musician/singer, in my opinion, and I think that she feels a great affinity for Joni. Again, welcome to the list. I look forward to reading your posts in the future. I certainly should have heard of her, and I feel a bit embarrassed that such a well-known, much-heralded singer/actress had previously escaped my attention. I'm not too plugged-in to musical theatre (obviously), but still...I should have been aware of her. It sounds as though she's had a remarkable career. I did see "Tender Mercies" when it was first in theatres, but will have to rent it again for Betty's sake. I saw a few episodes of "Eight Is Enough" back in the day, too. Still, I didn't pay close enough attention. I'm a real sucker for a small jazz group with piano and horn soloists, so I really liked her version of "River," too. ACOY just has a slightly more inventive arrangement, imho. I look forward to hearing her version of "I Had A King." :-) Thanks again. Here are some more artists on the Joni Covers CDs I don't know: who are Caroline Lavelle, Nana Mouskouri, Ethel Ennis (!), Lani Hall, Ian Shaw, Jesse Hultberg, Travis, Jacqui Fitzgerald, When The Cat's Away, Kristen Vigard, Kevyn Lettau, Sharon Cuneta, Susan Webb (related to Jimmy?), and David Blue? Would anybody like to fill me in on one or more of those people? I'm sure I've seen mention of Nana Mouskouri, but I can't remember where. Is she associated with classical music, primarily? Also, I saw a recent post about Jacqui Fitzgerald, but I didn't have the discs then and, although I read it, I didn't retain much (understatement) of the information. Anyone else out there do this? Annie, I am amazed - you must have incredible focussing power, to be able to sing the whole album including the instrumental stuff! I've tried to do that, and I can usually hear it find in my head, but when I try to vocalize it, I immediately forget how it goes! I know people who meditate and so on, and who have very good concentration - they can build an entire house in their mind.
