Aimee Mann, I think she is a strong singer songwriter who superficially resembles Joni Mitchell.>> And more importantly, has the vulnerability to emote the songs... <<7. Macy Gray, I think she would be interesting to see her sing a folk song.>> I dunno, I wouldn't pick something from the folk idiom for her funky voice - more likely something from HOSL-Mingus. (But *anything* would be fine, Macy!) <<8. Tony Bennet, hey why not.>> Because it would be extremely predictable... <<15. Ray Charles, The Last Time I saw Richard, what a choice>> Yes, it would be the strangest pairing of singer and song so far in this millenium! :~) You sure you wouldn't want to give him "The Magdalene Laundries"? For my money, I'd love to hear Mr. Charles do a soulful take on "Ethiopia"...I'd be weepin' after the first syllable! <<16. Instead of some old relic burn-out band, I'd love to hear from one of the 90's bands that mattered; Dave Matthews, Radiohead, Wilco, Son Volt, Counting Crows, Ben Folds Five (Ooooh, Imagine Ben playing some of Joni's piano stuff - they're one of the few that could tackle "Paprika Plains", I think). I dig the Stones as much as the next guy but they just don't work that hard anymore. <<18. The Jefferson Airplane, slash Starship 19. Jackson Brown 20. CSN and Y>> Again, these would be OK, Browne above all, but I'd prefer to hear from someone up and coming or riding their peak, not someone who's better days are literally decades behind them...although that doesn't apply to Young, whose new record is out today and is supposed to be fantastic! After Hejira, I lost interest. I couldn't make the transition in my mind to Jonijazz. I have been pleased to discover her on the Herbie Hancock CD last year. And I listened to samples of BSN on the web and I have to say that I can't love Joni now the same way I once did (idolized is a better word for it.) It is because of what smoking cigarettes has done to her voice. I can't get past it. I think she has ruined her voice and it makes me sad. She really can't sing anymore, IMO. There is such warmth, such sensuality, such drama. Having said that, I recognize that her voice has lost a good deal of power and flexibility. I wonder if she hadn't smoked, and kept the flexibility, AND added the warmth-sensuality-drama that aging can bring, what we would be hearing right now. But something's lost and something's gained. I didn't, but apparently while he was watching game 2 of the NBA playoffs between SanAntonio and Phoenix, David Robinson had a great first half, and in describing that, the announcer said, "David Robinson is unfettered and alive!".....I can just see the other announcers scratching their heads and going "huh?" Janis Joplin B. Judy Collins or Carly Simon, I forget which. C. Carole King D. Joni Mitchell. The contestant was temporarily stumped, the used his audience lifeline. The audience poll was not much help -- 30% for C and 40% for D, with the rest split between A and B, but after much hemming and hawing the contestant went along with the audience and got the question right. He eventually won $250,000 by backing off of a tough $500,000 question while out of lifelines. Joni is just the greatest(almost)! I got to see her perform a few years ago. Unfortunately, there was a little incident which spoiled the evening, But still, at least i got to see her. I had a husband once who liked her even more than me, but alas we are no longer together so i have no one to share my Joni stuff with. That is till I found this list! I loved her early years but still enjoy her new stuff...it is just different. Maybe this is old news to many or most of you long time surfers, but here's a link to a site with 126 pictures of Joni. Some are Diltz's, but not all, and some taken in her recording studio that I've never seen before. There's one with make-up guy Paul Starr (a mystery man from the tribute) too. Oh, and one from the Halloween party where Joni dressed up ala DJRD. ;-) http://www.corbis.com Hope some of these will help Steve P. with his cd artwork! (Hi Steve!)
