Its an ok-enough novel, which I mostly read out of affection for the author, a professor of mine from my undergrad days who has taken up fiction writing in her retirement. She was one of those memorable teachers who touch your life and inspire you to work harder and do better and be better, so I'm glad to contribute to her royalty checks. Anyway, darned if in the first chapter, as her main character muses over her past mistakes, "words from an old Joni Mitchell song tracked through her mind--don't it always seem to go . . . " Joni is freakin' everywhere! Maybe its just me but doesn't it seem, with the new album and tour and TV appearances and the TNT tribute and etc., that Joni awareness is reaching some kind of critical mass? Hope so. ;-) Catherine T. in AZ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 17:19:00 -0400 (EDT) From: Spyder8@webtv.net Subject: Joni's Today Show Interview After reading the transcript of The Today show interview (which I unfortunately missed) some of Joni's comments disturbed me some: and strangely, as so often it has happened with her, some of what she said, sadly parallelled my own life. I once was able to sit down and write on the slightest whim. Everything moved me, and it was easy to put it on paper. I could sing so closely to her range vocally, friends would be jealous. I knew every note, every breath, every nuance of her expression. That was in the early days. Up until 1990 I still had that ability. Then something changed, almost overnight, It seemed to vanish. Many personal problems, relationships of an abusive nature over-ran my life, and the very single thing I cherished most in this world seemed to be gone. No longer can I sing those cherished melodies, no longer do I sit and just muse and write about the journey of this crazy life. Its as if something declared:"time's up,you had your chance" I cant explain it. I used to think it was something "in the air" {? } like some wierd atmospheric disturbance {which Im VERY sensitive to} maybe HARP is altering the atmosphere over my head, not enough oxygen or something... (i digress) anyway, In her own words JM says, " This is not a time for me you know, Its the shallowest, most unromantic time. It's not my time..." Katie comments, 'While Joni Mitchell does continue, her voice has changed, and she says she's blocked an cannot write songs now...she does not feel needed.." Oh my dear one, I weep for and with you, and as you continue to echo my own soul, know that so many love , cherish and most importantly still NEED you. The world will always need the likes of you. Its a mad mad crazy mixed up world, but never a day will pass when you won't be needed , by me, and millions of others the likes of us. I pray for us both the muse returns. 'N Sync's sales for the week ended April 16 were more than double that of runner-up No Doubt's ``Return Of Saturn'' (Interscope), which moved nearly 202,000 units and garnered top debut honors for the alt-pop outfit's first release in five years. Femme rapper Da Brat's ``Unrestricted'' (Columbia) was the week's other significant debut, coming in at No. 5 with more than 143,000 copies sold. Top sales increase of the week went to singer Christina Aguilera, whose eponymous first album (RCA) was up 8,000 copies over its previous week's figures. Other significant sales gainers were rock group Creed's ``Human Clay'' (Windup) -- up 7,000 copies; rapper Jay-Z's ``Life and Times of S. Who cares what the hell k.d. wears....did you hear how she held the note, didn't it feel gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood? Wow! I am leaving my husband for Mark Isham. He is adorable and I want to have his children. He is the sexiest trumpet player alive. Wynonna knows when to sing and when to strum. She made a good choice to focus on her vocals and nailed You Turn Me On...Once again the list is correct in noticing that even the pros had a hard time with both singin' and playin' Joni's tunes. Who ever mentioned that Joni's reactions may have been canned...Many times she was singing along, or swaying to the beat. I think the shots of her were sincere. I do have to share with you my daughter's reaction when Ms. Krall was singing near the end of the show...."Look mom, the old gal has nodded off!" she said upon seeing Joni with her eyes closed moving to the music. UK listers, we know she is planning on doing a follow up to BSN with Christmas songs, maybe we can persuade her to either do it live or at least have a few shows over there. I know that if I get the chance I will mention how you all miss her. Energywise, the band was winding down so Cyndi was singing almost by herself for a short while until they got it together. Even when they did, the sound was rather tentative compared to what it had been earlier, like they were hanging back in case Cyndi decided to go somewhere else. On the tape Mark Isham's sudden panicked glance over to Larry Klein makes me smile every time I see it. It's one of those very human, can't-help-myself moments. And Cyndi had a few moments of looking rather scared herself. But I loved that she was so into it she didn't want to stop, even though it was scary to do the unexpected. It was one of those times the music had a mind of its own. I have a hard time imagining how all of that could have been cleanly cut out (since I'm not an editor), but I'm glad it was all left in. That taking a chance and having it work out so well is part of what got people to their feet I think. Plus, I thought her "come hither" hand movement to get the band going again was downright sexy and fit in well with the sensual mood they'd all created. Cyndi never said the "you're out of sight" lyric. Wonder if she thought that dated the song and so she deliberately left it out. LOL!!! very funny Debra Shea ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2000 16:48:55 +1000 From: john low Subject: Joni & Folk Song I’m sorry if the following re-floats the “Is Joni Mitchell a folk singer?” issue, but here goes … I have long been intrigued by the fact that Joni, unlike other musicians who emerged from a ‘folk’ background, has never recorded any traditional folk songs. Even bootleg recordings of early performances, such as those at the Second Fret, reveal none in her repertoire. Why did she stop singing them? Les’ JMDL web site contains a review of her first album by Les Brown in ‘Rolling Stone’, 6 July 1968. I thought that one particular comment of his was quite relevant to this issue. He observed: “In contrast to the narrative verses and repetitive choruses that mark traditional music, there is in Joni Mitchell’s work a full sense of composed music and written words.” Was traditional folk music, which has continued to nourish artists such as Dylan throughout their career, ever really a major influence on Joni? Does anyone recall the titles of any traditional songs she has performed? I’d be interested to hear any thoughts others might have on this. John (in Sydney). __________________________________________________________________ Get your free Australian email account at http://www.start.com.au ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #153 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe onlyjoni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
