Walker" Subject: RE: TNT Tribute this is going to be one of those months when it's 120 emails a day, 90% jc, and i can't even keep up. i'm responding to last night's posts, afraid to download todays... several people have commented positively on lauper's 'carey' which didn't really knock me out at the taping. i didn't get to watch the tribute, but my sister has taped it for me. i'm actually really looking forward to hearing lauper again (along with a few other high points). > >A close second favorite of the show was Richard Thompson doing >Woodstock. amen! it's so interesting to know he had to prepare this late, it was great. i'm not a guitarist like marcel, but even i knew he was doing something special with the song. and i was really happy that my sister liked amelia. shawn colvin and mary chapin carpenter are obviously such huge joni fans; i'm glad they got to redeem themselves. the interlacing guitars, the two very differently textured voices, they really made that beautiful song even more so. patrick np - kronos - early music shimh - (still hearing in my head) - the paul horn/joni 'blue' from the cd cover set vol ii. had to leave it at work today, but i sure loved that moment. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 23:56:08 -0400 From: "patrick leader" Subject: RE: tribute reaction still slogging my way through the email >thought it was touching that she shared the story of Bill and her walking >through the Chelsea district singing Joni's song. kind of strange that hillary said chelsea dist in london, but joni wrote it about the chelsea neighborhood in ny. >I was also pleasantly surprised that Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin >Carpenter >were wonderful. I remembered a few of the listers that saw the live >performance said one of their songs wasn't so hot. I love both of those >singers and I was prepared for a let down. > actually i hope my report on the taping didn't prepare anyone for a complete let down. what i (and others) wrote was that they went very flat on 'chelsea morning' i think it was actually more shawn. i'm guessing and hoping that they sweetened the vocals for the broadcast. but i wrote that their performance of amelia at the taping was terrific, and apparently that has come through in the broadcast. and i'm glad. and even though i went to the taping and had a great time, i'm jonesing to watch the broadcast right now. soon... patrick np - kronos - early music ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 21:54:37 -0700 (PDT) From: zapuppy2@webtv.net (Penny) Subject: Re: Joni Fever on the Dot Coms Hi Brenda, and welcome! Maybe I'm naive, but even the increased activity at Amazon should show a little bit of a trend in the record store sales too, shouldn't it? I'm thinking based on the Tower Record's top 1000 chart too, which is based chain wide, not just net sales, Joni should have had a pretty substantial week???? I think I'm even more interested in that back catalog's sales numbers than I am in BSN's sales, cuz the addict / pusher in me remembers just how most of us got hooked on Joni in the first place. ;-D Penny :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Grace dies when it becomes us versus them......Philip Yancey ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 21:57:16 -0700 From: "Brenda J. Jesus, what a tour de force. I'm still stunned. I'm gonna go way out on a limb here, and say that what Jaco did for the bassline, Thompson's done for the guitar solo -- whether you get it or you don't, you can't honestly say you've EVER heard the instrument played like that before. I'm never going to tire of turning this one way-way up. >> Well Thank you Don Rowe. I thought Balck Crow was amazing myself. I could care lsess what KD Lang wore. the main thing was that she was there. There should have been alot of other there to honour our Joan including Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, George, Paul and Ringo, CSNY (although they have an excuse they are touring) and many many more!!! But, she looked unkempt. >> AND...we have no idea what is going on her life. She could be going thru tough times or maybe is not well.....who knows? I wasn't there to critic her outfit and if I was blind it really wouldn't matter. Do not judge a book by it cover. Maybe that is what she was saying. I didn't evern notice that lack of shoes. (i work in television, but for some reason i keep screwing up the damn vcr.) the show was as great as i remember from seeing it live. i have a few more comments on the event after watching the video and reading many of your wonderful, insightful comments. i would have left most of the audience cutaways on the cutting room floor-found them distracting and gratuitous (in the real world i'm a videotape editor much like barbara burst). i also thought they went a bit overboard on joni's cutaways. in some, she looked absolutely radiant; in others, a bit self-conscious and uncomfortable. i thought she was particularly moved by richard thompson's "woodstock". i'm wearing out the lauper, thompson "woodstock", sweet honey, krall and joni performances. astounding interpretations. i'm having a friend burn me a cd of the show with all the performances except the two wynonna and the colvin/carpenter medley. don't know what the big deal about kd lang's outfit is all about. her emotional and sensitive performance spoke volumes about her feelings towards joni paying her the ultimate tribute. i agree with another lister about mark isham's solos and though he had some great moments, i think he's starting to sound a bit one-dimensional. perhaps he should try a solo without the the mute. i believe kakki said bob sheppard can fill wayne shorter's shoes. sorry, but NOBODY fills wayne shorter's shoes. he can play the parts, but fill wayne's shoes-never. someone commented that in "radio", wynonna seemed to be straining to hit the high notes. interesting because i think it was on "radio" at the rehearsal/soundcheck, she had everyone transpose it up a step to give it more energy. debra, great to see you over at the thompson chat. many of the folks over there shared the same sentiment that many of us over here seem to have about cyndi lauper's incredible performance of "carey". someone over there suggested that maybe daniel lanois should produce cyndi's next album. sounds good to me. anyway, it was truly an incredible event. may it further spread the joni gospel. can't wait for the madison square garden show. phil ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #148 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe onlyjoni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
