She is considered as a "megastar" because of her larger-than-life persona (she endorses products and those products sell well after her endorsement, she is a producer, and her life is fodder for gossip-hungry tabloids). She is 33 years old (I think) but is already a pop culture icon. Although I am not a big fan of her, I included her version of Joni's BSN to Bob's project at the insistence of a friend (who is obviously a fan... no... a fanatic). BSN is included in Sharon's latest "When I Love" album and because she is as popular as the Philippine President, I am glad that BSN will be embraced by her legions of fans and will continue to be popular. I am glad that Kakki likes her version of BSN. So does millions of Filipinos. The show was wonderful. I was so enjoying the show that I didn't have the time to pick out things to criticize. I don't care what they were wearing or even if they sounded all that great (I'm not a Bryan Adams fan either!), I was mostly just so happy to see so many give tribute to Joni that I was over-whelmed. KD respects Joni or she wouldn't have been on the show, period. Who really cares what she was wearing? Joni doesn't I'm sure. I loved all the performances but really thought Cyndi Lauper's was the best. For the lister who stated they were glad to hear her "real" voice," you should get some of Cyndi's albums from the '90s. They are wonderful, a totally different Cyndi than one thinks of from the '80s. I also loved Colvin and Carpenter's duets as well as Dianna Krall's A CASE OF YOU! I love Cassandra Wilson and I must say that I like her version of BLACK CROW better than Thompson's. I was over-joyed throughout the show. I am wondering, however, why other's who state Joni as an influence or who constantly state their love for Joni weren't on the show such as Chaka Khan or Sarah McLachlan. Lord that woman "kin sang!" ... as we'd say in Texas! ;-) Best Country Single of the Year -- No need to hold the Country Music Awards this year -- Wynnona wins hands down for YTMOIAR. "Hey I'm Not So Bad After All!" Award -- Elton John, who like me, got caught in the octave shift that plagues me whenever I try to sing Joni! ;-) Still a fine rendition. Best Joni Blissed-Out Shot -- During Thompson's "Woodstock". Please God, if You're listening ... let those two make an album once this symphonic trilogy is finished ... I shall NOT stop asking you. Most Adventerous Interpretation -- Though Cassandra showed plain as day that 'Mingus' was, afterall, a free jazz album, and Sweet Honey came darned close to proving that "Circle Game" and "The Tenth World" are actually the same song -- this one goes to Richard Thompson's "Black Crow." Jesus, what a tour de force. I'm still stunned. I'm gonna go way out on a limb here, and say that what Jaco did for the bassline, Thompson's done for the guitar solo -- whether you get it or you don't, you can't honestly say you've EVER heard the instrument played like that before. I'm never going to tire of turning this one way-way up. Well that's about it from here ... back to digging out from under the e-mail mountain. Anyway, Joni doesn't get a penny from BSN (except songwriting royalties) until Reprise has recouped all its costs, and that ain't going to happen for awhile, IMHO. I would have loved to have seen more of Joni's paintings, but guess I'll have to wait until Saskatoon. The really interesting aspect of the evening for me, was the fact that they did have several different types of singers (pop, country, jazz, etc.) and I felt that this showcased Joni's musicality and how she has experimented in many styles. I felt Diana Krall really showed how Joni's songs could easily become Jazz standards. I wished that they had used some of her more recent compositions. Regarding Diana Krall: I first heard Diana about 5 or 6 years ago when they were playing her 1st American released CD, "Only Trust Your Heart" (at that time, "Stepping Out" was only released in Canada) in HMV. I immediately bought that CD and fell in love with her. I first saw her later that year (or maybe the next year) at The Algonquin in NYC. The Algonquin is a pretty staid cabaret room and the audiences are always "polite" and "refined". The first evening that I saw her, she had the audience cheering, screaming, and standing up to get a better view of her piano playing. I couldn't believe that I was witnessing this, least of all at The Algonquin. It was truly one of the best musical evenings I have ever spent. I told my lover that we were witnessing something that we would look back on in years to come. He agreed. We knew that we were seeing the start of an amazing career. We went back a week later (she played for a couple of weeks). We saw her again the next year at the Algonquin and in subsequent years at a couple of jazz clubs in NY. But on the first night of seeing her, as we were walking out of the room, she was standing in the lobby of the hotel and we told her how much we enjoyed her and looked forward to hearing her again. She took my hand, and said "Really?". It was so amazing that this incredibly talented and sexy woman was so shy and had no idea of the impact that she had on the audience. We talked for a couple of minutes and she was genuinely a nice person. I think that she deserves all of the praise that she has been given. She is, as they say, "the real thing". My only regret is that we probably won't see her in small clubs again. But perhaps we will. I saw her at The Blue Note (a jazz club) about a year and a half ago. This woman just plays the piano and sings and possesses the audience. I highly recommend that anyone who liked her on the tribute check out her CD's (her tribute to The Nat King Trio, "All For You", is one of the best jazz recordings to come out in years, IMHO). A CBC radio program was giving away BSN to two people who could answer this question - probably done as a draw from the best answers. I thought I'd enter, but found that I could not think of which album was truly my favourite. Then the answer which seemed closer to the truth struck me. My favourite Joni Mitchell album is always her next. The reason is because each of her recordings has left me wanting more. The human soul can never get enough of what it desires the most: beauty, meaning, truth - in short, all those qualities that define Joni's work. I didn't win a CD with this answer, but I would not have been able to wait until delivery anyway. I bought BSN the day it came out. And now I wait with a worm on my tongue (bated breath, ha!) for her next album, already my favourite. Joni has left me wanting more yet again. Cheers to all Joni listers. Ms. Lang's lack of shoes before Joni could be considered an act of reverence and submission. More realistically, I think k.d. did it to get noticed. I thought what she was wearing was very manly and she reminds me of all my straight male friends whose unironed clothes she could have been wearing that night. That's part of k.d.'s act, to be an out lesbian and butch it up. It really works for her, gets people to notice her, and it's marketing as much as it's an exaggerated expression of who she really is. She's an amazing talent, but that isn't enough. Someone like Madonna, who has a minimum of talent ("a thimbleful of talent in a sea of ambition" - Mick Jagger) succeeds only because she always gets people to talk about what she's wearing, what she did to her hair. If you ask me, what k.d. wore and didn't wear was an extension of her persona. She works her masculinity the way Cyndi Lauper works her own fun, goofy idiosyncrasies. I think k.d.'s singing was pristine and heartfelt and she only honored Joni. I don't know that Joni ever sang in bare feet, but we've seen plenty of pictures of her without shoes, especially in the hippie days. And Joni is awfully fond of sandals that exhibit her feet with their red painted toe nails as recently as two years ago. I noticed a general lack of glitz in the outfits of all the musicians which is fine with me. That places the emphasis on the music, not on image, and the focus remained on Ms. Mitchell. - - Clark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 11:17:18 -0600 From: Bounced Message Subject: RE: onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #144 From: "Christine Nunn" Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 12:43:46 -0400 How much of this is her finally loving the press? Indeed there are two different versions of this disc, the cardboard case disc has the black and white checkers and taxi-yellow on it... the jewel-case disc is a pale green color, the sequence of the pieces is different and the cardboard sleeved disc has an extra cut with the original A Cappella/guitar version on it . My husband was bummed out that he bought me something I already had but I told him it was great because now I have them both! has anyone else seen both versions? Cassy the newlywed N.P. But Cyndi Lauper was the bigger disappointment for me, after such enthusiasm was expressed on JMDL about her before the telecast. I found her far too mannered. I had never seen nor heard Richard Thompson before; he came across as a very strong personality, kind of a primitive. But for me he didn't perform JM's songs well. "Black Crow" has a rhythm that RT never came near; his time feeling on it was unbelievably square (am I actually writing this?). Interesting problem for me...a listener who as a musician is a headstrong interpreter. Richard Thompson did his own thing and IMO, it just fell flat. It's like "I defend to the death your right to say it, but I disagree with what you say." I was surprised how much difference one fluffed word made in "Woodstock:" Instead of singing that the bombers were "turning into butterflies above our nation" he sang "turning into butterflies across our nation" which just causes the picture of the moment JM created to disintegrate into a newscast. My favorites were James Taylor and the Colvin/Carpenter duets. C/C really preserved the very characteristic rhythmic freedom that make JM JM. In fact it sounded like, at one point in "Amelia," they went so far they got a little turned around but it was only momentary. Their voices were clear and perfectly miked and balanced; I could hear every word (not the case with Elton John.) On "Chelsea Morning" I even heard that astounding bass note (I've never been able to figure out what it is) that comes on the syllables "SUNshow ev'ry second" and "TALK in present tenses." The comments I'm reading tonight--there will be 200 I'm sure--reveal a fascinating spread of response. This list is a great place to be. I apologize for bothering the entire list with this request, but I've been swamped with work lately, and am only now getting down to the business of lining up tickets for Joni's Chicago concert. I searched in the Ticketmaster site, but the available seats don't look great. Does anyone have an extra ticket you won't be using for Joni's CHICAGO (Rosemont) concert on May 30, 2000? It's a big plus if the seat is near or next to other list members. Also, has a "meet and great" been set up for Chicago? Finally, haven't separate lists been set up for potential concert-goers in the various tour cities? If so, where are they? Please e-mail me privately with this information. I'd like to make some decisions today, if at all possible. Finally, to all the wonderful Detroit JMDLers: so sorry I can't join you again, but I'm afraid I can only afford such a delicious trip "once in a while, in a big blue moon"! May you capture lightning in a bottle twice. ;-) Mary P. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 18:46:29 +0100 From: Martin Giles Subject: who came to the UK JONIFEST/TROUBADOUR? Hi peeps. Sorry to take up bandwidth by repeating this message, but I want to make sure everybody involved sees this... This is a request for all the people who came to the Troubadour on the 4th January to get in touch with me. We had a couple of photos of the whole group taken, and I was thinking that it would be nice if one of these shots appeared on the artwork of the (soon to be released) CD. What would be even nicer would be to have a caption under the photo showing who's who, so that everyone who gets a copy of the CD will be able to put names to faces. So get in touch with me with your email addresses. I'll get the photo mailed back out to y'all, and you can me mail back again, describing your position in the picture. I think that'll work! atb, Martin. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 14:40:54 -0500 From: "Mike Hicks" Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2000 #198 "Im new" Les, Whatever you did to get me on the list I appreciate it. I only saw the last hour. If it will be aired again would someone please let me know. I'm just glad to be here. I am looking forward to "being with" people that have this taste for music. This list does not reflect the last-minute changes, however. I was wondering if someone had come up with a corrected list. I added the album name to the old list from the site above: 1. Raised on Robbery - Shadows and Light ? 2. Carey - Blue 3. Chelsea Morning - Clouds 4. Big Yellow Taxi - Ladies of the Canyon 5. River - Blue 6. You Turn Me On (I'm A Radio) - For the Roses 7. Help Me - Court and Spark 8. The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines - Mingus 9. The Circle Game - Ladies of the Canyon 10. Amelia - Hejira 11. Black Crow - Hejira 12. Free Man in Paris - Court and Spark 13. A Case of You - Blue 14. Both Sides Now - Clouds Obviously missing is Woodstock. Is "Raised on Robbery on the Shadows and Light CD? I do not own this one and the discography I consulted seemed confused. I don't remember anyone doing "Big Yellow Taxi" on the show. Any other changes anyone knows of? She's probably sold a couple thousand copies--and that's good--but it isn't tens of thousands by a long shot. I know this because we are dealing with a book that jumped from No. 122,000 to No. 7 on Amazon's best sellers, after an appearance on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. After a Today show appearance, it jumped to number two. In all, the book sold a little over 2,000 copies to get to that point. Don't get me wrong. I'm happy for the 2,000 sold and I'm happy for Joni's rise on the charts. But she ain't gonna knock N'Sync out of the top spot any time soon. Howard M. Since I'm on digest I don't know if Penny answered this, but I recall her posts have indicated that all the main internet music sellers (not only Amazon) are listing Joni sales at or near the top. I admit to getting nerdy excited over the sudden increase in the multi-album Joni sales - I was an advertising and publicity manager in my former career life and this stuff still gets my blood going ;-) > I am not aware that BSN has gone gold yet (500,000 >copies), and in fact this week BSN slipped from 89 to 99 on >Billboard's top 200 albums chart. I think every unit sold counts toward the gold - Penny posted earlier that the internet sales count in some way. Can't recall how Billboard gets their numbers - from Soundscan? But I don't think they count every single sale. > That was before the tribute, but TNT is one cable channel >amongst at least a hundred...whether the advertising budget >has been paid back yet is questionable, too... Regarding advertising, I was answering Penny's question whether Reprise paid for the TNT promotions. I don't think so - TNT produced and owns the show - so therefore the TNT publicity would not come out of Joni's payback/recoup account at Reprise. > I was in Tower (Sacramento) and they had this cool BSN > display on the wall, it was 3 or 4 feet wide, looked like > it was made of wood painted black, and three dimensional, > with the cover painting on it of course. Has anyone else > seen this? Yes, I saw this last weekend at the Tower on Sunset in Hollywood! The display itself was very cool but someone camped it up terribly by including a cheesy plastic wine glass filled with red shiny confetti, some filthy coasters and an old ashtray full of REAL cigarette butts next to it! It would have been a funny gag at a Jonifest, but for a proper display at Tower, it looked gross!! I was kind of doing a voodoo accounting recoup forecast in my head based on Penny's stats. But one crucial element that I did not factor in is like you said: >Major label record releases can be like Hollywood movies - >the accountants can see to it that there is never any profit to >be shared out. So true, so true..... Speaking of record company profits, if Joni's early and early middle albums are also currently selling in the internet top ten, that would mean that Reprise is now making a nice profit on some "older Joni product", too, right? ;-) Kakki NP: MIke and the Mechanics - I Get The Feeling ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 15:41:37 -0400 (EDT) From: picard3@webtv.net (Sherelle Smith) Subject: Joni's Tribute Hi everyone! I'm back! Was so thrilled that TNT did this for Joni! I was equally amazed that so many artists had the same sense of awe that we do about her. I was really blown away by Cindy(sp?) Lauper's version of Carrie. Larry Klein looked like he was especially into the song (but Larry looks like that with every Joni song-probably her biggest fan) I wasn't offended by Bryan Adam's voice when he and Wynonna sang "Raised on Robbery." I think liking or disliking Bryan Adams is a matter of taste. I compare him to Macy Gray who has a very distinct voice-you either love it or hate it. I loved Wynonna's version of "You turn me on-I'm a radio." Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter seemed a bit nervous on "Big yellow taxi", but boy did they shine on "Amelia." I have always imagined those harmonies on that song and I felt they sang it with the depth of emotion it deserves. I remember Joni closing her eyes on that song. I was really watching Joni's reactions to each performance. I see I wasn't alone. She enjoyed James Taylor's version of "River" (By the way, is she referring to him in the song "Just like this train" when she sings, "Thinking of the pleasure I'm gonna have, watching your hairline recede, my vain darling.."?) Joni also closed her eyes while listening to Dianna Krall's version of "A Case of You". Call me crazy, but I don't think she liked either version of Richard Thompson's renditions. I tried to be impartial because I'd never heard of Richard Thompson, but I felt embarrassed because to me, it didn't feel like he was singing the songs with the respect they deserve. I apologize to any of his fans, but I agree with the person who said that it felt like he just picked up the sheet music and played it cold. He is, however, an excellent gutitarist and I did enjoy his playing on Woodstock. Sweet Honey in the Rock are fantastic!!! I've only seen them on tv once, but I really like them!! You could tell Joni did too. She does this little "hula" dance in her seat every time the music touches her. I thought KD Lang did a good job on "Help Me", but I caught an earlier interview with her and she appeared nervous about doing the song. She said, "Help Me is a great song, but it's a bitch to sing!" I liked Cassandra Wilson's version of "Dry Cleaner From Des Moines" but I'm very partial to the live version that Joni sings on "Shadows and Light." Elton John did a fantastic job with "Free Man in Paris." Joni really enjoyed it. His phrasing on the song was excellent and his piano skills were a treat to hear. I also enjoyed his comment about it being easier to play for the Queen of England! I was absolutely blown away by Joni coming on stage and singing "Both Sides Now." Even though she sang one song, it was the main course of the evening. I have not bought her new CD yet, but certainly will after hearing such a beautiful rendition of the song. Her voice was marvelous and hearing her sing was like a balm to the soul. Speaking of glimpses, did anyone notice Michael Bolton in the audience? I actually like him, but my husband despises his voice, which actually reminds me a little of Bryan Adams voice. I agree that we saw a little too much of Rosie, but I enjoyed glimpses of other Joni fans like the actress lawyer they killed off in Law and Order, as well as Goldie Hawn and her son who is the spitting image of his father Kurt Russell. All in all, it was so nice to know that others in the public spotlight feel the way we do about Joni. Thank you TNT for bringing this to us! Take care everyone!!! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 15:56:44 EDT From: WirlyPearl@aol.com Subject: Joni in People Magazine Hi, Sat down to flip through my People Magazine which has been on the table for a couple of days. Lo and behold but one of the first pictures I see is of JONI. She's on page 15 in the StarTracks section. April 24 issue with Princes William and Harry on the cover. The caption reads: "i can't describe how I feel," said Joni Mitchell (below right with Ashley Judd) at a loss for words during a tribute to the singer-songwriter in Manhattan. Also at the show, which airs April 16 on TNT were James Taylor (above) and fiancee Kim Smedvig. The photo is of Joni hugging Ashley, very cheek to cheek. (Joni is wearing a silver bracelet with some whirly designs on it (my favorite) which I hadn't noticed before). Had no idea that James was engaged. Hi fiance is sporting an engagement ring. She looks young enough to be his daughter and from the photos looks ummm, very shapely. Congratulations James. I was actually hoping they would do a little more of a spread on the tribute concert. There was an article in People about her a few weeks back but it mostly talked about her reuniting with Kilauren.
