Blue was my first Joni album (and still be on my feet) and made me fall in love with her music. I'm still working on her stuff post-Hejira. It's funny, when I first heard FTR, I thought it was kinda wierd. Then I thought Court & Spark was kinda wierd. THen HSOL. Then Hejira. Now I love them all. I guess it;s just a matter of time, but as pat says, and I quote, "Joni probably planned it that way!" I think there are songs on each album that touch people in different ways. When I look at the songs people pick as their favorites, I can't figure some of them out because others are so powerful to me. I think later in my life, some of Joni's later stuff will speak to me, ya know? To each her own. Love them all! She was not dressy but very stylish at the little LACE exhibit last December, too. I recall a smart-looking black and white sort of Mandarin outfit there. Ultimately, she can wear whatever she wants wherever and maybe she did just want to be really comfortable and wear lightweight, loose clothing under the hot lights while performing a challenging song and feeling a little nervous. As far as respect, if anything, I see it as a matter of self-respect. There's nothing wrong with looking your best on a big night. It doesn't make one "phony" at all. Just wanted to put in my two cents about the tribute concert. WAY COOL as a whole. Wynona was great and I love shawn colvin -- Amelia was good but could have been better. Cindy Lauper I think did a fabulous Job except for botching "It sure is hard to leave you" with "really hard to leave" (therefore having the word "really" twice in that sentence) and singing an extra verse at the end -- I think she was the highlight of the show though to be honest. What's his name I thought was rather lacking vocally -- woodstock was okay but black crow was a disaster in my opinion. James Taylor and Elton John both gave great rendidions. Joni was great too, as were the short films and Ashley's hosting -- the editing of the show was very keenly done so as to show Joni at her most animated most of the time while watching the performances. Very enjoyable show all in all. This post is in reaction to her interview there. Even if she never writes another song, Joni Mitchell has created an extraordinary body of work. Her songs are not just timeless but grow even more poignant as time goes by. As a songwriter, I can't think of any other who expresses such emotional clarity, truth and depth in her songs. She truly is a painter of words & music. Decade after decade, I try to put her music aside (because she is so huge and I do not want to imitate) yet, I return again and again because I learn so much. She raised the bar so high and after all these years, very few others have come even close. Certainly no one has been able to raise it any higher (imho). I wonder-- how many thousands of songwriters has she has influenced? In a sky filled with stars, some brighter than others, Joni is a Supernova. The world today needs her very very much. Looking forward to her well-deserved tribute tonight! So he got to you, too. I was totally captured by his expressive guitar playing and the "masculinity" of his voice (even though there's not a very wide range). As for looking at the teleprompter, he didn't know he would be performing Woodstock until about an hour before the show started, and I would think most of that hour would have been spent learning the guitar part. Stepping in on such short notice and doing such a great job is really impressive. It's unlikely that he knows any of Joni's lyrics the way a fan does; he started about the same time she did and he's been busy writing his own songs for the last 30 years. (In my 11 days of RT fanhood I've found that out and been amazed at some of what I've heard.) He was originally scheduled to do only Black Crow and I don't think he was using the teleprompter for that. And if Wynonna was reading the lyrics it wasn't obvious or important to me. I loved what she told Joni just before singing You Turn Me On (I'm a Radio): "God, Joni, I've loved you since I was 10 years old." It was so heartfelt and wistfully spoken that I've recalled that moment many times today, and thought, yeah, Wynonna, I know just how you feel. I don't pay much attention to what people are wearing so I hadn't noticed it at the taping, but watching the show on TV I realized at some point that I was seeing an awful lot of black leather, like everyone was told to wear something black, and most of the performers did. I'm used to seeing that dark look in New York, but usually not on TV, and don't at all associate it with Joni. It seems so un-Californian. Once I'd noticed it, it seemed rather odd for a splashy celebration, but then, how cool, I thought. There's a definite "look" to this show. Again, such care was taken with this production. Plus against that somber background Joni in her silver-looking dress sparkled even more than she usually/always/naturally does.
