'does this give a true impression of her genius?' the short answer- No. Alan did say- "i can tell she writes very intelligent music.' also- he would ask 'is this how joni did it?' about particular songs. at one point he said 'did she write that? (refering to BYT) I thought that was carol king!" (good for one slap).. i digress... Sweet Honey was my big thrill. I've been going to there concerts since 83 and have always been impressed and moved by their passion and commitment to music and social change. Circle game was a treat to hear- i loved their version. also- it was the best vocally to appreciate- due to that blurry mushy TV sound quality that made everyone else sound so flat. I hope this does come out of video with better sound quality. the production was SO over the top- i personally had trouble with the pomp- getting past it- but i liked what they did with the tribute/history sections- the home movie quality and the photos suspended from ribbon. also- some of the archival photos of ms joan were amazing. diana krall, cassandra wilson and cyndi lauper get my vote for making the songs a.) not just a cover version, b.) more than just their own style. c.) a wonderful hybrid that served the songs wonderfully. d.) all of the above. D.) ALL of the Above... the rest were good to fair... and joans Both Sides Now was stunning. I"m oozing for may's concert. did anyone else think that hillary clinton replaced her real eyeballs for plastic ones. and who's this bill she was talking about... hee hee hee... i thought it awfully charming when mary? sang... "late last night i heard the screen door slamp, and a byt came and took away this old man.." (Point to James T- who made the sweetest sheepish gesture)... i'm glad for the attention- the limelight for our Joan. goodnight doug ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 01:21:15 EDT From: Wolfebite@aol.com Subject: bryan adams butt i particularly liked when Wynonna (just Wynonna?) pinched bryan adams butt. doug ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 01:22:25 EDT From: CaTGirl627@aol.com Subject: Re: opinions about the tribute In a message dated 4/17/2000 12:24:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time, erinstoy77@yahoo.com writes: << Well, we agree on kd, at least! She's got a beautiful voice, and I thought "Help Me" showcased it well. Believe me, being the music snob that I am, it was very hard for me to say that I actually liked ANYTHING Bryan Adams did. (My best friend and I used to joke that a CD called "The Best of Bryan Adams" would be blank.) HA HA HA how true!!! -Catgirl! Same with Wynnona, but to a lesser degree. However, I think the two of them did an outstanding performance together. In my opinion, Richard Thompson just completely missed the boat with Black Crow. To me, it sounded like he'd never really listened to the song, just read the sheet music and took off from there. The spirit of the piece was missing (as was a melody). To each her own...Isn't it funny that two people so enamored with the same music can have such opposite opinions?! Erin >> Well we do agree on the Brian. I don't know, I am not crazy about Winonna but You turn me on..was quite good. I am sure Richard Thompson heard Black Crow but wanted to change it like the way Cassandra did when she covered it. I find it interesting when people take a cover (like CSNY's Woodstock) and totally change it. That is the kind of style Richard plays. I really liked it. So yes it is very interesting how two Joni freaks can have such difference in opinions... :o) Catgirl ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 01:24:45 EDT From: Guitarpoint@aol.com Subject: Re: opinions about the tribute < Hejira > Maybe what Joni meant was that she wrote the songs in stanard and later reworked them. She referrred to the tunning as using Spanish tunning and at that point I had never heard that term. I can't remember the last time I was so moved by watching TV. It was just incredible. What made the show especially poignant for me was the commercial break conversations I carried on with my daughter's boyfriend. He had many questions about who Joni was, why I listened to her, what I found so fascinating about her work. I found myself taking my own personal journey along with her songs. To listen those songs and recount to Mark where I was at the time squeezed more juice from my heart than I could have predicted. While watching the show, I felt the way I imagine I would feel if I were to be renewing commitment vows to a long time lover. I fell in love with Joni and my Joni connections all over again. What a great show! The highlights have got to be Cyndi Lauper singing "Carey" and Diana Krall (WHERE HAS SHE BEEN ALL MY LIFE?) singing "Case of You." I was somewhat disappointed in Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin, both of whom I love. "Amelia" was especially disappointing....Oh well, you win some and lose som. Both k.d. Lang and Wynonna (solo on "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio") were also great, but Wynonna's opening duet with Bryan Adams was bad........ I didn't realize it was rosie tell she opened her mouth. Then I realized that this "asshole " that was all over the place was rosie. What you see on t.v. is not what you get in public. Dave ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2000 23:25:53 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Wowowowow!! WOW!!! WONDERFUL!! All I can do is gush. This was a beautiful, beautiful tribute. With each performance I kept saying "now that's the topper!" and then the next one after another were just as great. My jaw was agape and grinning throughout. Each performer was so heartfelt and wonderful in their own unique way. James Taylor's extremely loving River was just over the moon. My God, it was like no one else was in the room except him and Joni - talk about palpable electricity between the two. k.d. was fantastic - she has one of the best voices in the business. I thought Richard Thompson made Black Crow totally his own - it was somewhat 60s Clapton-esque to me and I loved it. Also thought Sweet Honey in the Rock's Circle Game was absolutely delightful. Cassandra Wilson did a great Dry Cleaners. I LOVED Elton. And yes, yes, Diana Krall just about stole the show - wow! The show musicians lent soooo much to the production. No surprise - mostly the top guys in the business - Peter Erskine, his sometimes band mate, Bob Sheppard (who can very capably fill Wayne Shorter's shoes), Greg Liesz, Klein and Mark Isham (contributing on almost every song). Joni seemed to be welling up with emotion constantly and she looked absolutely beautiful. The photo montages were the best I've ever seen (lots of the best of Diltz) and the presentations were perfect. I loved seeing Tony Bennett the painter talking about Joni the painter. Joni's Both Sides Now at the close was unbelievable. I agree with those who thought they should have canned Hilary Clinton's laughably canned speech. Geez! It was great to see Donald next to Joni. The other guys sitting with her looked like her makeup artist Paul Starr and maybe one of her managers. I kept peering for jmdlers in the audience. Did anyone who attended spot themselves? I thought I spotted Patrick briefly towards the end. Kakki, going back to watch the second showing now. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 02:57:37 EDT From: JRMCo1@aol.com Subject: TNT Tribute It was so gratifying to see Joni feted in the mainstream mass media, at last. Larry Klein as musical director assured a true representative sample of Joni's genius on the show. Some of my thoughts: - -My best of show vote goes to Cyndi Lauper doing "Carey". I loved the way she infused the song with an African rhythm and slower tempo. Her voice is perfect for this song. Occured to me that Cyndi has more depth than she's given credit for, probably due to her bubble-gum image from the "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" association. But hey, Miles Davis covered Cyndi's "Time After Time," and Joni reveres Miles, so Cyndi deserves her props. - -Got a kick out of the bit of promo they played over the "Batman and Robin" credits. At one point Goldie Hawn was saying how glad she was to be there, and how great the show was gonna be, while her bored-looking son looked on. Goldie looked at him and said laughing "He'll be glad to be here, too!" During the actual show they cut to Goldie and her son, showing him applauding enthusiastically. So cute. Nice subtle touch. - -Glad someone did "River." But I cringed every time James Taylor sang "river so WIDE." Made it a trite rhyme with "teach my feet to fly.." instead of singing "loooong" the way Joni does, holding the note in what I have always considered a beautiful bit of musical onomatopoeia (yes, I made that term up). - -A bit of narration from one of the bio-films (all three of which I loved; they reminded me of Barbara Burst's editing touch): "Mitchell's music doesn't just express emotions, but creates redemptive beauty from them." Nice. - -I want an outfit like Lawrence Fishburn was wearing to sport at the New Orleans Jonifest! - -Loved Cassandra Wilson's "Dry Cleaner" and Diana Krall's "Case of You" and thought Ashley Judd handled MC duties beautifully. She's an obvious true believer and ought to be on the JMDL, imo. Feels so good to be in love with Joni Mitchell tonight. - -Julius ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #142 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe onlyjoni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
