I have three pairs of tickets for her May 22 show in NYC, but I'm only using one pair. I'm not looking to make a profit, just to recover my costs and sell them to another fan who will truly appreciate the show. Here are the details: 2 tix - section 205 - row M - seats 1 & 2 $75/ticket = $150 plus ticketmaster "convenience" (ahem) charge, handling charge and "facility" charge total price = $177.10 2 tix - section 302 - row M - seats 5 & 6 $50/ticket = $100 plus all charges, above total price = $125.80 I know tickets for a second show go on sale tomorrow morning, but it's a small theatre. If you don't have tickets yet, at least this is a sure thing for the same price. If you're interested, please email me offlist. Dear Greg: Do you know who she is? She has said on numerous occasions that she is *not* a folksinger, that she hasn't been a folksinger since 1965 when she started writing her own songs which are *not* folk songs. If you really don't want to read anything but Joni content then you need to subscribe to the only Joni version of this discussion list. That way if those of us who are on this version of the list that allows NJC (no Joni content) are careful and make sure we include NJC on our subject lines when we are posting messages that do not pertain to Joni, you won't get them and you won't have to read them. It's true, we do forget to include the NJC on such posts from time to time but to err is human. And how does the saying go about forgiving? Oh yes! To forgive is divine! Wouldn't it *be* divine if we could all remember that one? Its pretty short, but the writer seems to "get" Joni's career, which is always refreshing. Catherine T. in AZ STARS SHINE IN TRIBUTE TO JONI MITCHELL by Larry Rodgers The Arizona Republic Lovers of intriguing and daring popular music are lucky that seminal singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell didn't devote her immense creative talent solely to her first love. Painting--not the rich mix of folk, pop, and jazz that Mitchell has crafted since 1965--has always been closest to her heart, viewers are told in a wonderful tribute to her that airs today on the TNT network. "In her mind, she has always been a painter first," says Tony Bennett, part of the impressive lineup that interprets Mitchell's influential work in the broadcast. A series of self portraits has graced some of her album covers, honestly revealing the physical changes in a woman who has relished change in her music. An All-Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell manages to scratch the surface of the singer's 21-album output, which has inspired countless artists, including performers Shawn Colvin, James Taylor, Wynonna, Elton John, k. d. lang and Mary Chapin Carpenter. "I don't know where I would have been without you," Colvin tells Mitchell before she and Chapin Carpenter beautifully harmonize on Amelia. "I've loved you, Joni, since I was 10, and I can't believe this is happening," Wynonna gushes as her idol watches in New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. Wynonna, whose sister, Ashley Judd, does a radiant job as host, lends a twang to "You Turn Me on I'm a Radio" and joins Bryan Adams for Raised on Robbery. Part of the fun is watching how various performers choose to interpret Mitchell's songs. Cyndi Lauper serves a hypnotizing take on Carey, the tale of globe-trotting musical vagabonds. British folk-rocker Richard Thompson chants his way through Woodstock as Mitchell closes her eyes and sways in her seat. Jazz pianist Diana Krall threatens to steal the show with A Case of You, and lang gently caresses Help Me. Actor Laurence Fishburn reminds viewers of the songwriters forays into jazz. Mitchell was asked by jazz legend Charles Mingus to set lyrics to the last melodies he wrote before his death, resulting in 1979's Mingus. Mitchell's jazzy Dry Cleaner From Des Moines is put through its paces by Cassandra Wilson. The 56-year-old honoree appears on stage at the show's end, backed by an orchestra to sing Both Sides Now. Still a stunning presence with her high cheekbones and curious eyes, Mitchell exudes an aura of bittersweet joy that reflects the complexities of her music. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2000 16:07:03 EDT From: SMEBD@aol.com Subject: Re: Close, but no guitars. ;-( In a message dated 04/15/2000 1:34:21 AM Eastern Daylight Time, zapuppy2@webtv.net writes: << but alas, no guitar because the call that beat us in knew the answer also. For me, that was a painful perfomance to hear. I love that song, and I felt like he kinda butchered it (which is a shame, because I have great respect for his musicianship and a love for Fairport Convention). I found it very interesting to watch Joni's reactions when the camera panned to her. Erin >> WOW!! Interestingly enough I have the exact opposite feeling ont he show. I thought Bryan Adams and Winonna was awful especially him. He can't sing for shit (IMHO). However, I love Richard Thompsons version of the song Balck Crow. It was very well done. He made that song his own just like James Taylor did with River. I really liked Amelia as well. They did not play that in an alternate tuning which I thought was interesting. HU........... Dave ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 00:18:20 -0400 From: Russ Harlan Subject: Tribute Impressions First of all, hey y'all... I'm a relative newbie to the list. (Relative in the sense that I was a list member for about two years prior to the release of "Hits/Misses". Life intruded, but I'm glad to be back. I remember this as a literate and thoughtful group.) I'm usually more of a lurker than a poster, but I had to post tonight because of the tribute. So nice to see the lady get her due. What a band! Dean Parks??? Mark Isham??? Terrific stuff. Is it only me, or did others find Wynona's performances as highlights of the evening? I'm more of a fan of many other performers on the show (Elton, JT, k.d.), but I have to say that Wynona's singing was confident and very much in the spirit of Joni. Others on the show, while enjoyable, looked a bit tentative -- as though they might have benefited from a bit more rehearsal time. Some performances didn't feel fully realized. Another exceptional performance: Cassandra Wilson. So nice to hear some Mingus, I was concerned that the entire show was going to be the early pop work. And when Joni came on at the end with "Clouds"... amazing.. singular. (I've been lucky enough to score tix for her show at Chastain Park in Atlanta next month. I've never seen her before, so I can't wait.) On the whole, a very well-produced event. (Save the annoyingly frequent shots of uber-fan Rosie O'Donnell. I have nothing against the woman, and she has managed to help artists like Joni. But did we need to see her so frequently? How about more shots of Susan Sarandon?) The show had a nice feeling of intimacy without being schmaltzy or twee. Hat's off to TNT for not making an "obvious" choice like an all-star tribute to, oh, Phil Collins. (Although when they do, I'm sure Rosie will be there, too.) Elton's remark about being more nervous performing for Joni than for the Queen was priceless! I look forward to reading the group in the weeks ahead. Cheers, - -- RussH Viewer discretion may be advised, but it's never really expected. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 00:27:34 EDT From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: opinions about the tribute In a message dated 4/17/00 12:04:29 AM Eastern Daylight Time, CaTGirl627@aol.com writes: << WOW!! Bryan Adams has no voice at all, more like chalk scartching backward on a blackboard. Black Crow is a tough song to do. I would rather have seen Cassandra Wilson do it, but Thompson's version was OK. In my understanding of the legend, it was written about David Geffen and was the first public reference to his being gay. I enjoyed the bit of extra emphasis in Elton's phrasing of the line about the free man getting to see a "very good friend." Also interesting because of Elton's own feud (since healed, I suppose) with Geffen when he was on Geffen Records. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 00:40:35 EDT From: Guitarpoint@aol.com Subject: Re: opinions about the tribute < WYONNA > Erin I do like Wyonna, that's why I noticed her playing. Whew. First of all Joni was looking great. Damn what a babe. Oops sorry ladies but its the old Betty Grable conditioned response trip. I couldnt help noticing how great she looked. Jonis such a beautiful woman. She looked about 30 tonight. Living proof that cigarettes dont make you look old they actually keep you a perpetual 38. Continuing to exercise my constitutional right to free speech I have to say that I kept looking at Joni and seeing someone totally amazed that at the other side of her life was this. Many times as the all intrusive television camera that does everything but have a small running blood pressure meeter of its target superimposed on the screen, I thought JOni had this look on her face as if like "what can I say". A national if not world broadcast of an entire event being produced with hundreds of stage hands and settings and acts and technology......all for Joni who LOST that beauty contest to another girl with horned rim glasses back in school days. Here was a musical even on steroids. each song produced to overproduced with this incredible band and performers interpreting her songs to fit their style. Joni has indeeed come a frighteningly long ways. If someone had suggested that to her 30 yrears ago she would have been hard pressed to believe it but here it was happening. That was my first thought. What must Joni think as this is happening. I liked all the songs but what really got me was Elton. He sang Free Man in paris in a very low register and it seemed to me that he was having a hard time with a cold inflicted vocal chords. In fact the song was played in a very unusual key. In any event here he was transposing incredible complex chord passages with fills into what I would bet was a last minute octave of choice. Incredible passages. Hes doing so much with the instrument that if you heard him all alone you would look in the other room to see where he must be hiding the band. Sorry but Eltons about the best pianist in the business. I also loved Cindy laupers version of Carrie. I saw her on the grammys a while ago and her voice just blew me away. She is so great. One of the most underrated singers in the business. AS for the other Women their wardrobes left me gasping. here it is a huge night out fo respect for the guest of honor they wear levi shirts and jeans. gasp. At some point you need to have respect for another person. This was it. I realize of course that all sorts of Weknowbetters will leap to the defense of the slob-chic and call me all sorts of names but thats how I feel. My last impression is that Joni did a great job in here new symphonic mode. Actually Joni transcends whjatever she chhooses to do on any given night. In that regard shes like Miles davis. Anyway while I loved the songs she did I would still like to see her tickle the Dulcimer. But what a fricken voice. Absolutely seguing into the next phase of her singing career and from what I heard her do shes right there with Peggy lee. If you dont know who she was go to the back of the class. Seriously Peggy Lee is one of the all time best female vocalists and song interpreters in history and a genius. In any even Jonis voice is so filled with soul as well as passion. she is preparing to tackle a new direction in her career to best take advantage of where her voice is going. And it is to a wonderful place. her approach to songs now will be to take each passage and make it her own. Like Van Morrison does. It remains a fact that her voice and soul content are on a level above most female vocalists today. While the MHSB (modern hot singing babes) preen and flash the pepsodent smiles and do an exact replica of the twenty or so other female smash acts who play the Celebration to Women Song Festivals and dont invite Joni. Here was Joni putting a song into a place they couldnt dream about.. So her performance flashed me back to seeing the grand dames of singing in this century and knowing now the difference in her singing today as opposed to when I first heard her. Like Sinatra she is adopting a place in which she will be comfortable (the pace and register) in the years to come. She will make this place her own.Where she can interpret the melodies and add dashes of articulation or phrasing that makes that version unique. Like a young girl standing there in the cameras gaze I felt like a dad must feel when the girl gets old enough to have a wedding day and the dad seeing her in her gown must realize she will never be that little girl again. As much as Id like Joni will never do the first four albums again. So thats my thoughts. Just the fact that this was a globally broadcast TRIBUTE. What a wonderful thing. She has made it to the promised land, never to be forgotten. She will be the standard for this era. What a tribute in and of itself. Actually it occurred to me that this even was more significant than many others recently. Thats because IT has been decided by the industry and the powers archiving its history. Joni is the winner. She above all others will be the one that embodies the sould and meaning of the time in which she played. Who else is there. madonna ? Winona ? Celine? Brittany (gak) When in doubt you go with the poet. I taped it so Ill have to go back and watch it a couple of more times at least.
