It ran, on the east coast, in the first half of the eight o'clock hour ( I'm almost certain). I thought it was a very nice piece, with lots of "clips" of Joni, including some that were new to my eyes. I especially enjoyed the one with the young Joni sitting on stage and playing the dulcimer. Does anyone know where that was from? Anyway, those on tyhe west coast, you still have the chance to see it - so I thought I'd post - on the chance that this might remind you. Single most disturbing news on the piece: Joni says she doesn't feel "needed" right now. That this is a very un-romantic time, and that the " stuff that makes it through to commercial radio is basically just jingles that they can put in as foder for more commercials" - or something to that effect. Maybe we should all write her and tell her we need her. God knows, I need her! Ok, got to run, catch the piece if you can. I'm just sorry that my Luddite tendencies have kept me away until now ! I have launched myself into cyber-space during my research for my new book - "Shadows and Light", a biography of Joni Mitchell to be published next year by the large British-based company, Virgin Publishing (part of Richard Branson's group of companies, just in case any of you get the wrong idea about the name !) . The book will be distributed internationally . For so long now, I've been dismayed at the often woeful lack of attention and analysis of JM's extraordinary body of work over the years. The book is an attempt to redress that. I'm a life-long fan of Joni's work , with dual identities as a BBC news journalist and an Arts writer and broadcaster; I've also written two other books (the most recent, Hymn to Her, a collection of profile interviews with 15 women musicians including Suzanne Vega, Nanci Griffith, Janis Ian, Yoko Ono , Rosanne Cash, Jane Siberry, Moe Tucker, Neneh Cherry, Tanita Tikaram, Carla Bley). I'm aiming for my book to be both passionate and poetic but also a credible literary work about a woman I consider to be one of the most influential and creative forces in contemporary music over the last three decades. Maybe I'll get to meet some of you during trips to the US/Canada this year (I live in Britain and the book launch will be in London; I'll let you know details closer to the time in case anyone would like to come along) . Maria Callas was > Diva Supreme, and her arias were a step above cliche > love songs. In fact, I'd > venture to say the term originated from opera > culture. > I agree with Jerry - the "diva" business is more of an attitude than anything. It's the spoiled-brat superstar kind of thing. Although originally meant for opera singers (more often than not sopranos), it went on to be applied rather loosely to singers in other genres. The "diva" would be the type who would throw a hissy fit if she didn't get exactly the right kind of roses, if she didn't occupy centre stage, if she wasn't positioned in her best possible light, if she didn't get her 2 pounds of all-red Smarties and so on. I would have a hard time believing Joni would fit into this type of category. When Joni wants something "just so", there's usually a good reason for it and it has as much (or more) to do with the ambience she wishes to create for her audience and her band, and it's not a spoiled-brat kind of thing. I've heard stories about operas singers - Kathleen Battle being the one who stands out - and their silly demands that make little sense (although they might - I'm sure many of these demands are stress-related - maybe the performer really DOES have major stagefright or something and is actually hoping they DON'T get what they're demanding, so they don't have to perform.) Diva may also be used to refer not necessarily to the spoiled-brat type but also to those who are somewhat out-there in their performance style and the way they dress. If this is the case, you can apply it to people such as Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston who overdo the vocal acrobatics (with or without the possibility they could be spoiled brats as well - I don't know about this). The term has also been applied to Elton John (say no more). It tends to be rather pejorative. Joni may say it's OK to call her a diva, but she was laughing at the time - she doesn't fit the usual pattern. In her case, she's no diva, but she is a goddess! ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? This is a great idea - maybe the cape could be the one Joni's wearing in Hejira (the black crow type of thing). The crazed fan would go skating away down a river. I have been a Joni fan for a long long long time. As a singer/songwriter, Joni Mitchell has been a huge influence in my life (like she is for so many songwriters). There are two things I would like to share with you. #1 I worked for several years with a man whose name some of you may recognize--Jim Messina (Loggins & Messina, Poco, Buffalo Springfield). One day he was talking about his early days as an engineer (which is how he got his start and where he met Crosby, Stills, & Young). He was remembering back to the time when he was engineering a demo tape for the young, new singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell !!! Now I knew this man had some pretty amazing history, but for me this was the ultimate. I think this may have even been before her first record. Anyway, a little bit of possibly unknown Joni trivia for the archives. #2 As a result of working with Jim, I just independently released my debut CD called "Over the Moon". Several reviewers have heard the Joni influence so if anyone is interested check out one which is on the unofficial CSNY website: http://oldgreycat.com/frcsny.htm Kate Bennett Singer Songwriter kate@katebennett.com www.katebennett.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2000 19:06:07 -0500 From: pat holden Subject: another Canadian begging for a copy of the tribute on my knees begging..would some kind soul do me the sweeeet favour of making a copy of the tribute show too. Before KINK put TI on to play 6 or 7 tracks on random mode, they informed the listening audience that they would be giving away the Joni signed Martin soon to the first caller answering a Joni trivia question. OK, that works, thinking I'll just switch to plan 'B'. Plan 'A' had been that I had earlier called several friends and family members, had them put in KINK's phone number in their speed dial, told them what time frame to listen for the cue from KINK, and we'd get the Martin with the quick flood of calls. Well, my friends and family don't know jack about Joan, except for that I'm (what they think is) her biggest fan. They wouldn't be able to answer a Joni question if their live's depended on it! So, it was on to plan 'B'. Plan 'B' was using my sister's identity (I asked her permission), so armed with her name, phone number, SS#, date of birth and current age, address written down, my daughter Carly could make the call on my cue. I had her push the phone's number before they were even done asking the question: "What is the first name of the daughter Joni gave up for adoption?" People say my voice is easily recognizable and I had just talked with the DJ two nights earlier...call me paranoid! ;-) The trip-up came one short sentence after the trivia question: "We'll be opening up the phone line in just a moment to take calls." Excuse me, but "SHIT!!" So I don't know how many seconds they waited to open the lines, but we got a busy the first ten times we tried. Finally, the call went through and when they answered, we were informed we missed being the first caller by one! They did ask Carly for the trivia answer, and of course she read off "Kilauren" written on the paper lying before......but alas, no guitar because the call that beat us in knew the answer also. So if it's any consolation, the guitar probably did go to an earnest Joni fan. But is there still hope the guitar made it to the JMDL family? There is one more JMDLer I know of in the KINK broadcast area. ;-) Penny :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Grace dies when it becomes us versus them......Philip Yancey ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2000 23:24:56 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Joni in comfort and style Penny described: >The one in ours is a very earthy looking Joni taken at the > Hotel Bel-Air. Again wearing no make-up, Joni's in rusty red >jeans, a purple denim long sleeved shirt, a long scarf around >her neck tied in a knot that matches the color of her jeans, >ankle socks and what looks like strapped leather and rubber >shoes. She seems to have a particular affection for those kind of combo Mary Jane/earth shoes. She's wearing them in the U.K. Times photos, she wore them on Letterman and she wore them at LACE, where they looked funky cute with her dramatic Miyake ensemble. >Kinda looks like a picture of my mom having a smoke break >from pulling weeds. ;~D Is Joni becoming "artsy eccentric"? May be that middle-aged thing of finally giving up the vanity for the comfort. But at least she's doing it with style and not going in for the shapeless jogging leisure wear, yet ;-) Valiant effort on trying to win the guitar, Penny. If the person who won went through half the effort you did, she/he must be a rabid fan! And it's very heartening to hear of a radio station who plays so much Joni these days. I can see a whole new generation discovering her. We will all look very forward to the biography, Karen! Kate, I have always loved, loved Jim Messina going back to Buffalo Springfield and Poco. How fortunate you are to work with him! His acoustic remake album of his songs "Watching the River Run" from a few years ago is a stunner. I'm sure most of us had no idea that he worked as an engineer on the early Joni demo. I hear he occasionally "sits in" with some other fantastic musicians at a little club in Santa Barbara. I'd love to hear of any of his or your upcoming shows in the SoCal area. Vollmar wrote: >I have been a fan since learning about her through her >connections with David Crosby, Graham Nash and >Woodstock. She is absolutely my very favorite > artist. Vollmar, I've "seen" you around the CSNY list for a long time and am happy to see join the Joni list. A friend of mine from that list and I are always joking that the two lists are like "kissing cousins" from the artist/music history perspective. ;-) If you haven't seen it yet, you can check out the JMDL web site at http://www.jmdl.com and then click on the Gallery section to check out some of the group.
