The interview took place between Simone Solondz and David Crosby. The Joni content came into the interview after Simone (AG) asked David (DC) about his writing style and he replied that the words come first. DC: Yeah. One of the big effects on my writing was (Joni) Mitchell telling me to write stuff down. She said, "David, you throw away more good phrases in an afternoon than most people can come up with in a week. What's wrong with you, you brainless twit? Write your shit down!" And I learned from her that if you get even two words in a row that mean something, that make you feel something, you should write them down. So I do. AC: Do you find that collaborating is different with everybody you work with? DC: Yeah, and I really like doing it. I like it because when you write or play or sing with other people there's a natural exchange that goes on. You learn stuff from them, and they learn stuff from you. You are enriched by it and broadened by it, and so are they. I've written with a lot of people, very diverse people: Michael Hedges, Phil Collins, Joni Mitchell. AC: What are some of the methods that have worked for you? DC: There's no set way. Sometimes you have a set of words and you say, "here," and wait to see what happens. And it's like sticking a bomb in someone's pocket if you wrote really good words. AC: Has it ever happened that what they come back to you with is so different from what you imagined that it doesn't really work, and you say, "Hmm, maybe not"? DC: No, I've been lucky. Joni took a set of words I gave her and just ran for the horizon. AC: Is that "Yvette In English"? DC: Yeah. AC: That's a great song. DC: I love it dearly. But she truly, truly ran with it. I only gave her the bare bones of what that song is. I still have what I wrote, and you can see that she started where I started, but she's a way better writer than I am, and she went for it. That song is at least three-quarters hers. She wrote all the music. She wrote at least as many of the words as I did. And she took it to a level that I could never have gotten it to. I think she is the most brilliant singer-songwriter of all. I mean, I love Dylan. He's a good poet. But musically, she's light years ahead of him, and that's what kicks it over the top for me. AC: Were you both coming up with alternate tunings at the same time? DC: I was working in tunings when I met her, and she was working in tunings, so we influenced each other. She was writing songs like "Michael From Mountains," and I was writing "Guinnevere," and we couldn't help but listen to each other. I think she's probably more advanced at it than anybody except Michael Hedges. Michael Hedges was pretty much unquestionably the finest acoustic guitar player of this century. He took tunings to a level that nobody except Joni has ever gotten close to. I completely understand what Gina & Deb are saying. I'm going to tell Leslie that I don't want to read any of the reviews of the Greek show before we see Joni at Concord. I want the privilege of being able to gasp with surprise at any unexpected song Joni offers up and I think there will be others who agree. So if reviewers could label their posts in some way (I thought some of the American Beauty posts should have said 'spoiler' somewhere in the subject line), I'm sure a lot of us would be very appreciative. Of course many of us will want to show our enthusiasm right away after we've seen these shows and I'm sure we will all want to devour what everyone else has had to say once our particular concert is over. I certainly don't want to discourage anybody from posting reviews! There are some of us, unfortunately (I really feel for you guys in the UK & Down Under - welcome back John, I loved your travelogue post!) who won't get the chance to see any of these shows and I'm sure they will be hanging on every word that is written on the JMDL about them. Her colleagues and admirers gathered to pay tribute to the singer-songwriter at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on Thursday (April 6), and there was nothing but love in the room. Taped for broadcast on April 16, the TNT Masters Series concert featured some of today's most respected songwriters. The natural inclination would be to invite only folk artists, and Shawn Colvin, James Taylor, Richard Thompson, and Sweet Honey in the Rock certainly fit the bill. But the point of the night was to highlight Mitchell's talents as a songwriter of immeasurable intellectual and musical curiosity. Cyndi Lauper, the '80s bad girl of pop, found inspiration in a woman who wrote and played her own songs. "When I was a little girl, there weren't that many," said the subdued Lauper after her subtlety nuanced performance of "Carey," from Mitchell's Blue. "[Her music] really defined my life. She was a gypsy, and she was always beautiful." "As a guitar player, she has great instincts," Richard Thompson added later. Said k.d. Lang, who slayed the celebrity-heavy crowd with her full-bodied rendition of "Help Me": "It's a very proud thing to be a Canadian singer-songwriter. There isn't a Canadian songwriter who doesn't cite Joni as an icon." Accolades aside, the evening was about music, and, for the most part, the performers delivered, molding Mitchell's songs to fit their musical personalities. James Taylor injected his sunny melancholy into "River." Sweet Honey in the Rock gave "The Circle Game" African percussive accents, and their voices, otherwise unaccompanied, rang out in celebration. Cassandra Wilson, with eight horns in tow, mined for meaning and minor jazz scales in the multi-layered "Dry Cleaner From Des Moines." Elton John turned in a spirited "Free Man in Paris," and "You Turn Me On (I'm a Radio)" became a honky-tonk-worthy anthem, thanks to the spunky Wynonna. Thompson subbed for the no-show Stone Temple Pilots, imbuing "Woodstock" with an irony as only a Brit can. The only misses were the duets. Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter turned in a surprisingly flat performance of the "Chelsea Morning" / "Big Yellow Taxi" medley (even Taylor's harmonizing on the latter couldn't save it). Wynonna and Bryan Adams opened the night with "Raised on Robbery," and the pair's contrasting style (she's a little bit country, he's a little bit rock and roll) never meshed. But the real draw was Mitchell's performance of "Both Sides Now." It was the album of the same name that brought her the first of many real raves from colleagues, critics, and fans alike, and she has reworked her song for a reinvention called -- duh -- "Both Sides Now," with a full orchestra behind her. Mitchell and producer Larry Klein kept the song's orchestral arrangement simple, and Mitchell, whose strength among strengths was always her liquid poetry, mines the depths of her experience to strip her lyrics raw. It was a typically bravura performance from an artist who ain't done yet. - -- Marie Elsie St. Léger :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Grace dies when it becomes us verses them......Philip Yancey ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 02:25:17 EDT From: WirlyPearl@aol.com Subject: Joni Tribute Concert Wow! What can I say. I went back and forth last Friday deciding whether to get tickets for this show and fly up to NY from Florida. In the afternoon I had decided, no, with airfare it will be too expensive, my husband Steve said he wouldn't be able to come with me, would have to impose on Steve's uncle in the city for a place to stay etc...but I was moody for the rest of the day after making the decision not to go. Some of you may remember how I hate to miss out on Joni events. Finally, Friday night I just had to throw caution to the wind and I ordered two tickets from ticketmaster on the internet. After listening to more info about the show Steve said he wanted to come and I was very happy. But on Monday with the stock market reeling (he's a broker) he again said he couldn't take off work and I was on my own. Unfortunatley I ended up making airline reservations only a couple of days before leaving and ended arriving in NY at almost midnight on Wed and having a 6:45 AM flight home on Friday. But it definitely was worth it. IT WAS WONDERFUL and I'm so happy I went. I ran into some old JMDL friends and met some new ones. I was happy to share my extra ticket with the very sweet and patient Debra Shea. Unfortunately the $85 tickets were in the second balcony. I was hoping they would be better. In this case the cheaper seats turned out to be the way to go. Who knew? I managed to sneak in my digital camera and a 200mm zoom camera. I ended up taking about 90 digital shots and more than half of them are pretty good considering how far away I was. The lighting on stage wasn't that bright so I'm not sure how the other pictures will come out. I'm so anxious for you guys to see them. Unfortunately, from where I was sitting I wasn't able to see where Joni was sitting. The performances were for the most part outstanding. My hands hurt from clapping so much even though I did spend a lot of time fumbling between the two cameras and my binoculars. I too was blown away by Cyndi Lauper's rendition of Carey. She did it slow and sexy with a real funky rhythm. A great surprise. I loved the harmonizing by Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter on Amelia. k d lang really belted. out Help Me. What a powerful voice. She picked out a strange outfit to wear...an oversized mens shirt with unbuttoned sleeves, long baggy pants and bare feet. I don't want to go into describing too much. I can't wait for you all to see it. Some wonderful reviews have been shared by listmembers already and I'm sure there'll be a lot in the media over the next couple of days. I think they did a great job with the photo montages and commentary. There were many shots I've never seen. They of course did focus more on the earlier work. Even in the montages there was very little of the more recent Joni. I think Joni's outfit for this was much better than what she wore on Letterman. She wore an above the ankle dress of vertical crinkly fabric, probably silk, with a matching longer coat. The sleeves were pushed up to her elbows. Through the binoculars I thought the dress was green but in the photos it's more of a purple. It perhaps had a bit of an irridescent quality where it looks one color in one direction and another color in the other. She wore round toed black suede shoes with a sling back and thick soles. She wore tights with them so it looks somewhat like boots from a distance. At her neck she wore a silver choker. She looked radiant. She did a beautiful, emotive version of BSN. I love that sway. She was all smiles at the end and seemed very happy. I went snap-happy during the song and just took a lot pictures as well as at the end where she's singing Circle Game with everyone and sharing hugs all around. I did get the hand holding between her, Larry and James. I'm not sure how to get the photos out to you, whether through the homepage (I did just contact Jim) or through email. I'm a bit out of synch time wise with the crazy flying schedule and almost no sleep at all yesterday or today. I think I'm starting to ramble so I'd better get to bed. I didn't get to talk to Joni this time but I did get back stage briefly while she was being interviewed and snapped a couple of profile photos before they made me leave. Patrick, what you said to her about Wally was perfect. I'm so glad I decided to go on this Excellent Adventure. I'm also very grateful that I am able to afford to do whacky thinks like this. Appreciative too of my generous husband, and work that has very flexible hours. Once again, many of the listmembers I'd never met said I look a lot like Joni. I love to hear that.
