The review of CSNY was titled "Carrying on as stardust permeates the Garden," and included reference to a time "when young people were not embarrassed to utter phrases like 'we are stardust.' " Less predictably, in the book review of JUST SIX NUMBERS-The deep forces that shape the universe, the reviewer says "We are, Mr Rees tells us, quite literally made of stardust." Beautiful! It made me wonder if "we are stardust" might have originated somewhere other than with Joni Mitchell. I never thought so, but.... I saw her on the Letterman show and thought she sang magnificently, though it seemed the song had many more long pauses than she had been used to in her own works. The other impression I had was this: no one is more an advocate of the "standards" than I BUT even a good one, like "At Last" was mainly notable in this context as demonstrating what a superior, almost unparalleled songwriter Joni Mitchell has been. (One reviewer of my CD said that my praise for her as perhaps the greatest songwriter in English in the last half-century was excessive. Absolutely no way.) She mentions waitresses, truck drivers, gas station attendants (a dying species anyway, but they weren't when she wrote the tune). 'Barangrill' is written as one word, a state of mind almost, to represent what we all HAVE to do to make ends meet, while all the time our lives are much more complex. I think of the recording like an impressionistic painting that has been made into a flat print. It's just not the real thing---Joni live with the symphonies. I can't wait for the show. That's when it will become the 3-D real thing that it must be. This is /the kind of thing that should not have been recorded. At least the way it has been. The orchestra is flat and without much color or dimension. It's like Joni dancing with a partner she's not much into. They're just not working with together as a team. Still, Joni's voice is magnificent though and one hell of an argument for taking up cigs. It's like a beautiful old 78 with all the scratches and pops. I am sure to get flames for this because I know there are people on this list who cannot accept any criticism of Joni or her work that is nothing but 100% flattering. Still I think it will be a much better thread than what Kevin Spacey does or does not do with his penis. And if you are interested consult the New York Times review (April '99) of his production of "Ice Man". Spacey bought the rights to the play and they discussed more than just the Ice Man "coming" if memory serves me right or maybe it was another paper. In any event, I do have it buried somewhere in my library and I will dig it out if I am wrong about where it was printed. Humbly, - -Chili PS. Wow, let's see how many folks pick up of the JC end of your post! ;-) You know, I thought as you did the first couple of times listening to BSN ... and couldn't for the life of me understand some of the reviews that said the orchestra "swallows" Joni, Herbie, Mark, Peter et al. But then one night, after several well-placed glasses of Merlot, I took Joni's advice and really cranked it up to "Smoke On The Water" levels -- and boy howdy -- what a difference. Give it the juice, and the mix transforms completely -- don't ask me how. Of course, this kind of symphonic arranging is ideally a live concert experience, but to say it should "not have been recorded" is a bit harsh. Perhaps it could have been mixed and mastered to produce a fuller sound at lower volumes, I'll give you that, but it sure feels good loud ... at least until the neighbors bang on the wall! I was doing that the other night myself, something I rarely do, just sit and listen. Usually I'm reading or puttering. I always listen Source Direct. But I have a Dolby Digital set up and just for fun put it on Pro Logic, which almost always degrades the listening. Not so with this cd. It surrounds in a real spaciousness with Joni's voice planted square in the middle, just like it was a "girl singer" set up, with her hair pinned up glistening blonde and wearing a strapless gown with an orchid corsage. I think this is her finest recording in a long, long time and I can't listen to it enough. I compare the BSN orchestra with the way XTC used the orchestra on Apple Venus Vol. 1, and to my ears the joy is being able to discern the arranging skills and separation of the various sections at *any* volume. That would also apply to George Martin's work on the Beatles records, and also Joni's use of orchestra on Paprika Plains, Same Situation, Ludwig, etc. Now, maybe that's comparing apples to Oranges (or Oranges to Lemons in XTC's case!) since the other examples are all original songs and BSN is remakes. And I'm not dissing BSN, just noting that it does tend to lose some of the dynamic at lower volumes - maybe that's just the nature of those lush orchestra kind of records. I remember one of my favorite records as a kid was a Henry Mancini record with The Days of Wine & Roses because of the pretty strings, and I used to love to crank that one up! On the tape trees of the early material, her accent just doesn't seem as pronounced to me as it does, say, in the dialogue on PWWAM. Although they both had roots in folk music, their artistic directions would move in different directions over time. As CSN and Y, made huge concert venues and recorded classic folk rock LA pop albums, Joni Mitchell artistically remained very distinctive from CSNY. As they followed their own paths as a group and artists, Mitchell paved her own way while remaining professionally tied to the group, but artistically on a much different path. While Mitchell's music may not have scored as high on the charts, her influence remains and she has not lost her artistic impact. When I saw CSNandY on VH1, I was suprised by a number of things. First, was a song by Steven Stills. It sounded like a virtual remake of Bob Dylan's Subteranean Blues, forgive the spelling it is late here in Phoenix, AZ. I was so surprised that his material was so much like Dylan's and minus any of the charm. I have like Steven Stills and I was just shocked to see the artistic decline. While the group sounded OK, there was just a lack of energy. They seemed to be playing the same song, the same way without much growth. Although Neil Young has managed to stay away from most of the problems associated with 60's artists remaining viable in the present, even he looked bored to tears. I also noticed that his songs were much richer than the rest of the band in mood and in his energy. I suppose Joni Mitchell may lament not being a " Stadium Act" or reaching a large scale audience, her approach to music does give you longevity in a turblent music bizz. While Crosby Stills Nash and Young are becoming an oldies act, Mitchell seems to be re-inventing herself and her music without resorting to too many "retro" moments. Rather than replay her self as a 60's 70's star, she is really following her own distinct path. It must work. Here in Phoenix you can still hear "Free Man in Paris' at the local supermarket. Kurt Joachim von Behrmann ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Apr 2000 22:15:50 -0600 From: Bounced Message Subject: Joni and her look back ( David Letterman Show Appearance) From: "Kurt Joachim von Behrmann" Date: Thu, 6 Apr 2000 03:48:34 -0700 April 6, 2000 To: The Group From: Kurt Joachim von Behrmann I was lucky enough to check out the official Joni Mitchell site and catch that she was appearing on David Letterman. Aside from the usual show biz, talk show stuff, Joni Mitchell as truly a class act with a full orchetra. I was curious more than anything to hear her take on the classic "At Last." For me this is a real Etta James number. I really loved her interpretation of the song. All style and raw emotion taking the song to new highs. Joni Mitchell's version took the song to another level. Much like Billie Holiday, Joni used phrasing and her new found lower register to excellent effect. I was not sure how she was going to tackle this song, but she did a great job at bringing it to life in another manner. While I am on the subject of singers recording standards, this is not a new trend, but a telling one. When Natalie Cole, Rickie Lee Jones and Laura Nyro worked on albums of established pop classics, it seemed a natural fit. Considering Joni Mitchell's long time interest in Jazz, Both Sides Now seems like a logical progression. I think the pressures placed on singers being songwriters has done as much good as bad. Now there is an expectation that singers must record their own compositions. For someone like Joni Mitchell or Bob Dylan, that is not a bad combination. However, it is nice to see them doing other material. Even Queen Latifa has emerged as a strong singer of classics. As a side bar, Queen Latifa, and the little Boy, Ormand, or something, from te 6th sense added class to an other wise gross out Oscar show. Let me add, it was nice seeing Aimee Mann recognized after putting out strong albums no one bought. Anyway, I really enjoyed seeing Joni Mitchell sing live, and doing classics. While a number of critics have made comment on Joni's voice losing some of its luster, I really think she has gained so much more emotional force with the passing of time. With her many emotional ups and downs, giving up a chld for adoption, divorces, etc, I think her personal ups and downs and trial and tribualations have given her a really new voice that is so effective now. The 'weird minor chord' line is attributed to Sue and I don't see how anyone could mistake her voice for Joni's. Sue's voice seems very flat & nasally to me. Nothing like Joni's. Love to all, Tanya ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2000 00:50:05 EDT From: PFallo@aol.com Subject: joni tnt tribute recap absolutely stunning! they certainly did right by joni tonight at the tnt tribute. and while the show might have been a bit light in recent joni material, i think the show certainly captured the essence of our joni through some very creative interpretations of her music. joni, looking positively radiant in a green gown, was introduced at the top of the show and took her seat in a box overlooking the stage. the show began with a rocking but rather perfunctory "raised on robbery" performed by wynonna and bryan adams, a good way to kick things off nevertheless. one of the surprises and high points for me followed with cyndi lauper giving a very impassioned reading of "carey" in a much slower, but very creative arrangement of the tune. and she absolutely nailed it, making the song her own, showing great range and emotion. richard thompson followed with a powerful, moving version of "woodstock". his accompaniment on acoustic guitar lent a real earthiness to the tune yet capturing the essence of joni's original, a brilliant stroke in my opinion. his version of "black crow" with the band later in the show wasn't quite as successful. after a pre-taped intro from hillary clinton explaining why the clintons named their daughter chelsea and how much that song meant to them, shawn colvin and mary chapin carpenter followed with a medley of "chelsea morning" and "big yellow taxi". the energy picked up considerably when james taylor joined them for a verse and chorus of "big yellow taxi". sweet baby james followed that with a gorgeous reading of "river" that featured a beautiful, muted trumpet solo by mark isham. definitely another highlight. lawrence fishburne then introduced a video clip that chronicled joni's move to a jazzier style and her involvement with charles mingus. cassandra wilson followed that with a swingin' and smokey "dry cleaner from des moines". sweet honey in the rock then did a powerful, spiritual take on "circle game". another highlight. wynonna then did a by-the-book read of "you turn me on, i'm a radio". shawn and mary chapin then returned with a nice spin on "amelia" featuring some exquisite harmony. sir elton made a rocking "free man in paris", a perfect choice, sound like his own. i thought musical director/bassist larry klein, who actually did a tremendous job throughout the night could have been a little more in-the-pocket on the "free man". elton had the best line of the night, when he said he was more nervous playing one of joni's songs in front of joni than he was playing for the queen of england. diana krall followed with an incredible "case of you", accompanied only by herself on piano. the stage was reset and after a short video focusing on joni's love of painting, tony bennett introduced joni, who performed a lush "both sides now" luxuriously wrapping herself around each word. simply gorgeous. the group came out and joni had many out-of-tune voices reprising "circle game" to a pre-recorded track for the credit roll. a fabulous show. ashley judd did a great job as host. the video clips chronicling different stages of joni's career were great. most of the performances were spot on and while the show was all joni, my only disapointment was that joni only performed one tune herself. interestingly at the soundcheck, joni went into "dreamland" after "both sides now" as i suspect she wanted to do that instead of the canned "circle game" for the show's outro. spoke to drummer peter erskine before the show and though he didn't get specific, he said they were going to add a song or two of joni's that are going to be on the next joni album for the upcoming tour. what a show! speaking of dreamland. phil ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Apr 2000 21:58:51 -0700 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: Tribute Concert Wow! 'edge of your seat' is such a clichι, but that's exactly where i was during joni's performance. i can't really write about this, but i did think at one point 'i'm soon going to hear a whole evening of this; joni with an orchestra singing in this voice'. joni2k, if you will. i can't fricking wait. patrick np - joni - you've changed ni - now imagining - 2nd row, center orchestra- oakdale theater nr. hartford connecticutt, bless heather - may 27 ps. odd experience of walking out right next to rosie o'donnell, with no apparent handlers or entourage. i said ' i hear the taping went really well; i'm looking forward to the broadcast.' she said ' yeah, we had all the joni groupies in the audience'. 'not all of them', i answered. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #127 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe onlyjoni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
