It is a story that I know will incite envy among some, particularly the men on the JMDL. It had been about five years since I had returned from a two year stint in the Navy during the Viet Nam war. I was not too deep in “the shit”, as I was a sailor on a patrol boat in the South China Sea just north of Da Nang, but still, we were often fired on by the NVA. Our job was to prevent supply ships from Russia and China from reaching Hanoi and every day was filled with some small terror as we felt like slow moving ducks. I have few fond memories of that time which is a whole other story. Of course, the return of Nam vets to the States was hardly to a loving welcome, but my own family was sympathetic and allowed me to move back in with them. I soon made the basement all my own which I could enter through a storm door. I had attended Rutgers University in New Jersey for a brief period, but like a lot of vets, I was unable to concentrate on my studies. I was also a few years away from coming out of the closet. In an attempt to prove that I wasn’t gay, I made it a point to have a string of girlfriends. Sometimes when my body wouldn’t co-operate, I would tell them it was a “Nam thing” and most were very understanding. Soon, Rutgers asked me to leave and I took up other studies: Advanced Pinball, Marijuana Cultivation for Temperate Climates and Skate boarding 501 - Cement Pit Techniques. Of course, once you’ve grown some pot, you can either smoke it, which I did, or sell it, which I also did. This kept me in quarters which I brought to an arcade near campus to feed into a pinball machine called “Genie” which had a picture of a large and muscular blue skinned genie roiling in smoke out of an oil lamp on the score board. One morning I was racking up a lot of free play when someone threw a quarter on the machine, a pin baller’s way of telling you that you’ve-been-hogging-the-machine-and-howsabout-lettin’-someone-else-take-a-turn . I turned my head expecting to see my pal Cosmo behind me who was another Genie freak and a part of my smoke brotherhood. Instead I saw a petite woman wearing a short, dark wig. Her eyes were a deep steely blue flecked with hazel, and her skin was clear and pale. She had a very prominent mouth, turned down in a slight pout. What struck me most were her cheekbones which were high and dramatic, like those of a Mandarin princess. Inside me I felt a sudden hot sensation, as if a forest of trees were suddenly ignited into an inner mounting blaze. Just to look in her eyes I sensed a profound sadness that mirrored my own. My feet were nailed to the floor. After a few moments, I decided she looked a lot like Mia Farrow, but her mouth with it’s strong thrust of large white teeth reminded me more of Peggy Lipton. “Let’s take turns,” I said. She nodded silently, put her quarter in the machine and immediately tilted. She started to cry and I asked her what was wrong. I put my arm around her and she shuddered, then fell into my arms. “Nothing, it’s okay,” she said, laughing as she brushed away a tear. That silvery tinkle of a laugh I can still hear to this day. I laughed too, put a quarter in the machine and she played another ball, racking up something like a half million points. I was impressed -- I had never seen a girl who played this well or this intensely. An hour passed. I asked her if she wanted to get stoned, and she passed as it was still morning but followed me out anyway. Outside, I lit a couple of pipe-fulls, and stared at the cars as they rolled past us on a street slick with autumn rain. Moving cars have always mesmerized me, especially when I am stoned. She laughed and asked me what I was looking at. “Nothing,” I said. “What’s your name?” “Joan,” she said. “I ... I wouldn’t mind some coffee.” I knew I was supposed to ask her over to my place at that point, but I didn’t want her to know I was living at home, in the basement. “Uh, I’ve got some business to take care of,” I said. “Maybe we could meet some place later?” She told me she was staying at the Fairmont, which is the best hotel in town. I walked her to her car and saw she was driving a large and showy Mercedes Benz. “It’s not mine,” she said. “I’m driving it across country for someone.” Still somewhat embarrassed, I got on my own ride, a yellow Spitfire skateboard with a Blue Oyster Cult decal. I said I’d see her at eight. The dull, brown business buildings around us were releasing their captives for lunch. Dazed and distracted, I nearly collided with several tired and sour looking people who walked with their faces down, as if they were carrying their desks on their backs to the hamburger stands. A beat cop started to run after me, so I pumped hard with my leg and wove through a slow moving maze of matrons emerging from Macy’s whose bags and boxes went flying as I ripped past. That night, Joan got tired of waiting for me in the lobby and left me a note at the desk with her suite number on it. She looked very different when she opened the door. She had taken off the wig to reveal a fall of straight blonde hair. I thought her the most beautiful woman I had ever seen, but like all women, she was annoyed by my showing up an hour late and my inability to make decisions. She had asked me what restaurant to go to and I couldn't think of a single place. Part of it was I realized I had forgotten my wallet. When I finally admitted that, she laughed and suggested we order room service. “Great,” I said, relieved I wouldn't have to spend money. “That way we can watch the Rangers game.” “You like hockey?” she said, and smiled. Her eyes had a sparkle in them like a starry night. It was the first time I had seen her happy side which was when we both fell deep into a canyon of the warmest feelings and entered into a very beautiful journey. Of course, I don’t want to tell you everything that happened after dinner and the hockey game. Joan told me she was leaving the next morning for Vermont. A friend in Montpelier had called to tell her that they had had a deep frost a week ago and the autumn foliage was at its peak. “Sounds wonderful,” I said. “You’re welcome to join me,” was her response. We spent several days in Vermont. I hadn’t packed anything, so Joan bought me new clothes. She thought it was time I got rid of my old bell bottoms and bought me a pair of Sergio Valente designer jeans which I thought were too tight, but she said they made my legs look good. She wanted me to have a watch, a thing I hate to wear, but I let her buy one for me, a Rolex, which I lost a day later. We argued about that, about my indifference to it. I didn’t realize it had cost her thousands of dollars. At one point she screamed, “Grow up, already.” I stared at her and said, “Give me one good reason why.” Over those days we smoked pot and talked, drank beer, went to taverns, and kissed on long walks through achingly beautiful woods blazing with reds and oranges and yellows. We stayed at an old Victorian inn run by two older sisters who seemed uncomfortable with our appearances and the reek of my marijuana. They ran the inn and a doll museum/doll repair service. The television in our room was an old black and white that got one station, and not the one with the Rangers game. One night we had finished eating a New England boiled dinner when Joan thought she heard piano music. We saw one of the sisters leaving the basement of the doll museum and snuck into the basement ourselves. I lit my lighter and all around us were broken dolls from different periods, all of them staring blankly at us, some with only one eye, some without bodies, a few without heads. Up against one wall was an old upright with lots of Victorian scroll work. Joan sat down and played in the darkness. Her chords were melancholy, rich with notes from the black keys. She opened her mouth to sing and these words came out: “Everything comes and goes, marked by lovers and styles of clothes.” I had heard that song before. My sister Jill used to play that album all the time. What was it called? I asked Joan. “Court and Spark,” she told me. “Right,” I said. “Joni Mitchell...or Joan Baez,” I said. She laughed and said, “It’s Joni Mitchell.” “Are you sure” I asked? “Positive,” she answered. She played another piano song, something which sounded like “Ho Ho Dance.” I was totally hypnotized. I had never heard anything more beautiful and immediate in my life. “I have to take you back tomorrow,” she said, lighting a Marlboro. “Why?” “I’m going to New York. Staten Island actually. To buy a mandolin.” Our last night together was ... well, that’s between us. But for a moment, I felt as if we were both on fire, an ecstatic fire that started in our room and then leapt through the window to rage across the countryside. When we checked out the following morning, one of the two sisters couldn’t look us in the eye. Both seemed groggy and tired as we had kept them up. “How did you sleep?” the other one asked, staring at us as if we had murdered her children. I can’t even think about the moment Joan and I said good-bye to to each other, except to say that it haunts me to this day. A year later, I joined a rehabilitation group and returned to school. I met a handsome gay man who asked me if I had ever walked on the wild side, and who eventually gave me an extensive tour of it. I got a job in a record store and remembered when an album was shipped to us with a striking black and white cover. It was HEJIRA and I realized it was Joan on the cover in a big fur coat. I went through the Joni Mitchell rack and looked through all of her other albums, cursing my stupidity. I put Hejira on immediately, chased out the customers and closed the doors. Five tracks in, I realized that Joni had written a song about our time together. From an Englishman's point of view, and being Gay, where did all this talk begin about being a 'Gay' community. Does everyone mean a catholic tense or that we should all live together like the Jews, Asians, Hispanics etc and have a Gay quarter? In England, London and Brighton have always had Gay 'comminuties'. It has been pushed and man-made in Manchester and there is a tenuous community in Blackpool. Elsewhere we all integrate with the rest of society. I personally have had no problems with being Gay whereever I have lived. Being open about it is the main thing, to educate the bigots and the blinkered religious baffoons who style themselves as the moral guardians of society. As for capitalism, America is the greatest example of Man's achievement and the American Constitution is the greatest document ever written (based on the English 'Magna Carta'). It is, in essence, still the land of opportunity and the land of the free. You were also lucky to have Ayn Rand to point you in the right direction: but you continue to ignore her. There are many Americans who seem to have no sense of reality, of proportion or of objective thought. There are many silly laws in your States, especially California re: the smoking bans which have reduced profit for bars so it looks like that will be reversed soon. Then there is that perverse 'Knights Initiative'. Are these things really important? Your government seems to pamper to minorities or pressure groups and lacks the broader picture and does not have vision. You seem to end up with a hotch-potch of compromise for compromise sakes. The future for the world's greatest country looks very bleak. A return to basics and a re-read of the Constitution would be a start. The book was first published in 1984. The new version updates the group since then and includes TONS of incredible photos that Diltz unearthed from his archives - I've never seen a book so chock full of photos on nearly every page. All of the boys and their friends were interviewed for the book, including Joni and there is, of course, lots of great Joni content throughout with more in-depth discussion of the Laurel Canyon days, why Joni wrote the Dawntreader about Croz, their meeting and relationship, the production of Song to a Seagull, a somewhat bittersweet recounting by Graham of his relationship with Joni and more. This book is beautiful and includes details of each of C, S and N's early lives (they were all adorable children ;-) and numerous musical combinations. The sheer joy I felt when I discovered her I likened to discovering John Pizzarelli and June Tabor for the first time. Mind-blowing. Dee Dee Bridgewater is one of the jazz vocalists who are carrying the tradition initiated by Ella, Billie, Sarah, Dinah, Betty, Helen Merrill, etc. Along with Diana Krall, Cassandra Wilson, Janis Siegel, Patti Cathcart, Nnenna Freelon, Vanessa Rubin, Claire Martin, Ann Hampton Callaway and Susannah McCorkle, Bridgewater excelled in two ways of singing jazz (one is the scat vocalese perfected by Ella, Anita O'Day and Betty Carter, and the use of voice as an instrument; and the other is the story-telling vocal raised to genius level by Billie Holiday, Blossom Dearie, Cleo Laine, Lee Wiley, Abbey Lincoln). Bridgwater's two outstanding CDs are: LOVE AND PEACE (A Tribute to Horace Silver) and DEAR ELLA (A Tribute to Ella Fitz). The first album benefitted from ingenious arrangements and a tight musical support from musicians, among them Horace Silver himself. Outstanding tracks: "Permit Me To Introduce You to Yourself" and "Doodlin'" (memorably recorded live by The Divine Sarah Vaughan). The second album features Dee Dee in various settings (trio, combo, orchestra, duet) singing songs closely associated with Ella. Her slow version of "Mack the Knife" (usually sung in mid tempo to break neck speed) eclipsed recent versions of the song. Her voice has the best qualities of the best jazz vocalists from Sarah to Cleo to Alberta Hunter to Ernestine Anderson. Dee Dee released her latest CD "Live at Yoshi's". Her live tracks were just as good as her studio recordings. I am one of those bigots who think that one is good if one's live performance is as good as their studio outputs. Dee Dee's latest CD is a good place to start. Yet recent albums, including '98's Taming The Tiger, have suggested that maybe the time is right for something a little different. Hence the complete change of direction for this album: a collection of mostly cover versions performed with a 70-piece orchestra and including the likes of saxophonist Wayne Shorter and keyboard player Herbie Hancock. Mitchell moves gracefully through 12 standards that "trace the arc of a modern romantic relationship." Although the theme seems a little contrived, the songs are perfectly executed. Thirties numbers such as Comes Love and Stormy Weather have a languid, husky quality as she combines the grace of big-band phrasing with a post-hippy '60s laconic take on romance. Though there is a shimmering precision to this set, the strings never become schmaltzy, and not surprisingly the two most passionate tracks are her own - - the love song A Case Of You (first recorded in 1972), and a moving reinterpretation of her 1967 anthem Both Sides Now. "I've looked at life from both sides now," she sings with thought-provoking resonance. You can well believe it. However, if we play Six Degrees of Separation from Joni (kind of like the game with Kevin Bacon, only the music is better :-D ), I might be able to scrape up a couple of Joni related points (then again, maybe not!). Nancy Wilson sang "A Sleepin Bee" which was recorded by B. Streisand, who, as we all know, recorded "I Don't Know Where I Stand"--what do you think Penny, a couple of points at least? (If not for that, then how about the fact that Nancy Wilson has recorded a song by Bonnie Raitt who recorded "That Song About The Midway"). I'm desperate Penny (and I told you Kakki, I'm not above cheating). As for Nancy Wilson, she played the Blue Note with her trio (Llew Matthews on Piano, John B. Williams on Bass, and Roy McCurdy on Drums). The set list follows: I've Got You Under My Skin Save Your Love For Me Some Old Man (I'm not certain this is the title of the song--I was unfamiliar with it) The Masquerade Is Over A Sleepin Bee Because We're Kids If I Could Clear Out Of This World Guess Who I Saw Today? Hello Lovin You The good new: her voice is great. The bad news: she has become very mannered and did some very strange things with the microphone (waving it back and forth and distorting the sound of her voice). My lover, who has been dying to see Nancy Wilson since he was a kid, made the comment "She was waving the microphone as if it was a bottle of smelling salts trying to bring life back to a song that she had already killed". I'd like to say he was being a little tough, but I have to agree. But in all fairness to Ms. Wilson, I have to tell you that the audience LOVED her. Perhaps my lover and I really love the young Nancy Wilson when she recorded with Cannonball Adderley--we listened to an early recording this morning and it was wonderful. I wouldn't say that the evening was a waste by any means, but it was disappointing, especially since there were moments when she approached the material dropping all the mannerisms and it was really nice. Also the trio was very good. Listening to the trio, I did get the thought that I would love to hear Joni do some Jazz standards with a Trio. I'm a day late for an April Fool's joke anyway. Actually, the JMDL site - after about a year of lying dormant - has been completely revised, reworked, repainted, and repaired. We've pounded the dents out of the hood and taken it through the wash. I had planned this past week to quickly and quietly move the domain to it's new server. Obviously, it hasn't gone quite as planned. Not only is the new site not up yet, but the old one is down as well. Hopefully, things will be set right very soon. And Pat, it's nice to know that somebody noticed! :-) I am very excited about the site's new look. In particular, the guitar portion of the site has grown from it's present world-class status to simply the best guitar site in cyberspace. Sue, Marian, Mark, and Howard have spent hundreds of hours updating and revising everything. It's an amazing place! Anyway, I'll make an announcement just as soon as it's available on-line.
