It seems he's one of ten winners in the lithograph giveaway contest! The question was, Which song of Joni's would you want to put in a time capsule?" Following is a copy of Steve's winning entry: I would choose Joni Mitchell's "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" for the time capsule. This song speaks of the duality that both haunts and motivates us all, symbolized in the struggle between the earth bound serpent "fighting for blind desire" and the high-flying eagle "for clarity". Using these primordial symbols, the song seems animated by the ancient wisdom of the Native American - "the split tongue spirit talks, noble as a nickle chief" - who foresaw modern man's life-out-of-balance "here in good-Old-God-Save-America". Despite the stress and confusion, "There is danger and education in living out such a reckless life style" - we learn and grow as we go between the extremes. And realizing this brings us full circle to the higher wisdom of the split-tongue spirit, "The spirit talks in spectrums, He talks mother earth to father sky, Self-indulgence to self-denial, Man to woman, Scales to feathers, You and I", so that we see there is so much continuity and blend between these extremes. Like the paints on a master's canvas, or the colors in a Southwestern desert sky, the experience of life is beautiful and rich when taken altogether. What better message to put in a time capsule? Leslie Mixon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 22:14:16 -0800 (PST) From: leslie@torchsongs.com Subject: Story of Three Loves Do any of you remember an interview where Joni talked about the movie, "The Story of Three Loves?" Apparently, (as I recall) Joni saw this film when she was a young girl and was very inspired by the beautiful soundtrack music. Turner Classic Movies station ran the film two days ago at 7:15am (PST)(and since I'm home convalescing)and I watched it. I recorded almost all of it. It was a trilogy of love stories and Joni specifically mentioned the segment with Kirk Douglas. Has anyone else on the list seen this film? Leslie ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 22:24:50 -0800 (PST) From: leslie@torchsongs.com Subject: Diana Krall (SJC) I apologize if this message appeared in a previous digest - due to an email fluke, my recent messages have bounced. Monday night an old friend treated me to a Diana Krall concert here in Santa Cruz, CA. Like the Dylan concert here two weeks ago, the crowd was attentive and adoring. Diana was relaxed and was backed up by a crackerjack trio on upright bass (Ben Wolfe), guitar (Dan Faehnle) and drums (Shannon Powell from New Orleans - know him Paz?). At one point she asked the audience, "Does anyone know the name of the movie which featured both Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald?" Complete silence for about a minute, and then I yelled out, "Pete Kelley's Blues." "Thank god there's another music nerd here tonight," she replied. "I'm such a nerd," she said, "That I've got that movie on Laserdisc!" Coincidentally, Regis and Kathie Lee had Diana on (it was a rerun) and she performed "East of the Sun, West of the Moon." After Diana's curtain call, she played, "Peel Me A Grape," and then over the house speakers came Joni's voice singing, "At Last." I was third in line at Bass for tickets to the Concord Pavilion - bought 3 - for myself, the husband and Mark from Seattle. We got orchestra pit, 7th row. Whoo Hoo! Leslie Healing very nicely thanks to recent live music from Dylan and Diana at our very own Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium! ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #119 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe onlyjoni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
