On Wed., on MuchMoreMusic, there is some interview with Joni or something, on something called "SpeakEasy". I just turned MMM on tonight for quiet background while working on this frigging presentation, and my wife, who was sleeping on the couch, woke up and said "JONI... SEE THAT.. JONI" and rolled over. Anyway, it appears they talk to her on this speakeasy show... I have no idea how long it is or anything. I'll check out the MMM website when I get home tomorrow. Anyway, off to bed... and btw, anyone I owe email to, lol, I'll get to it, it's been one of those months! It's been quite a while since I last posted a message. I was saddened by the news of Wally's passing. I was out of the country at the time. I offer my sincerest condolences and prayers to all. I received my copy of Both Sides Now yesterday and what can I say? It is marvelous! I was reading the liner notes and lyrics on the train home last night and especially liked the inclusion of an introduction by Larry Klein. The idea of "tracing the arc of the modern romance" itself may not be innovative; Lord knows we've all experienced the excitement of love, the elation, the struggle, the disappointments, the expectations, the indescribable grasp love has on our hearts at times, and in my life, music has played the most integral part in expressing these emotions even when I couldn't. So, while the idea of choosing songs to trace this arc may not be an innovative one, Joni has chosen songs that tap into the primeval feelings that are the essence of these classics. I remember hearing Joni say in an interview that she was not particularly impressed with songwriters today, that the self-loathing attitude present in so many songs is boring. There was more to it but I can't remember right now. I remember this now because when listening to these songs I hear pure lamentation and celebration. It seems that the simplicity here is almost staggering! The songs cut RIGHT to the chase and the nature of all love relationships is represented here with lyrics that cry out and melodies that soar. I cannot take it out of the CD player...and I won't for some time. Once again, music is my therapy and Joni my therapist. Found this and the post to follow on Sonic net: Piano rocker Elton John, folk-rocker James Taylor and country siren k.d. lang are among the artists scheduled to appear at a New York City tribute to legendary singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell. The TNT Network's "An All Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell" will take place April 6 at the Hammerstein Ballroom, according to Mitchell's publicist. It is scheduled to air on the network April 16 at 9 p.m. EST/PST. Folk-pop singer Shawn Colvin, country singer Wynonna and jazz artists Diana Krall and Cassandra Wilson also will appear. Wynonna's sister, actress Ashley Judd, will host the show. Mitchell's jazz-pop standards collection, Both Sides Now, is due Tuesday (March 21). The new info found in this is that it let's us know it's being recorded at the Hammerstein Ballroom. (Where's that?) So I wonder if the Hammerstein Ballroom needs enthusiastic Joni fans to fill some seats. ;-) Penny :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Grace dies when it becomes us verses them......Philip Yancey ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 08:24:20 -0800 (PST) From: zapuppy2@webtv.net (Penny) Subject: More Dates May Be Added? Hi Again! This is the other bit found on Sonic Net. Trek in support of Both Sides Now finds jazz and pop-rock innovator paired with local symphony orchestras. Joni Mitchell, the '60s folk queen and an innovator in jazz and pop-rock, will perform with local symphony orchestras on an 11-city tour in support of her new album, Both Sides Now. The trek will open at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre on May 12, feature two dates at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York and end on June 2 at Philadelphia's E-Center, according to Alyse Kingsley, Mitchell's publicist. More dates may be added. Both Sides Now, which includes jazz-pop standards, is Mitchell's first LP that doesn't comprise primarily her own compositions. It also features re-recordings of two Mitchell classics, the title track (RealAudio excerpt) and "A Case of You." The LP was first released in a limited Valentine's Day edition box set that included reproductions of the singer's recent paintings. The regular edition of the album will be released Tuesday. Kingsley said a Mitchell tribute LP featuring Elvis Costello, Björk and others, is tentatively scheduled for release in late summer and added that Mitchell is planning a Christmas album featuring some of her own compositions. It then went on to list the confirmed dates we've all seen. What caught my eyes was the part about the possiblity of more dates being added. Oh, I hope so!! Recently I was literally given two "luxury box" seats to the Staples Arena in Los Angeles for a LA Lakers Basketball game. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to see "how the other half lives" and loving pro basketball (though having a visceral animosity towards all LA teams- [Giants fans and 49er fans have this genetic code in their DNA]) I decided to take my oldest son to LA just for the game and have a special day with him. While I "hate" the teams down there I LOVE LA (the city & area) and the downtown. BTW there are many incredible pure art deco buildings in downtown LA that are some of the best examples out of New York. Dont drive around downtown WALK around downtown if you want a visual spectacle. Another benefit of walking around in LA is you see all these places where you saw mass murder committed in movies like Terminator 2 and Heat. "Oh wow look over there, thats where the ten guys in Demolition Man were all blown away." or "Isnt that the building that was hit by the terrorists in Die Hard "??? I must also (for you music sluts) put in a good word for LA radio which could be the best in the country (pipe down New Yorkers). Face it New Yorkers you dont have 8 different stations with Mariachi Musics greatest hits AND 12 great rock stations. We went to the Staples arena after touring the IMAX theater and the African American Museum which has a really cool exhibit about the evolution of Black music in America.Check it out. Once we got into Staples I noticed that there was this incredible restaraunt (two actually) that was on a platform that hovered over the arena complete with well dressed waiters etc and legitimate haute cuisine. You could eat sauteed prawns and foi gras AND watch the game at the same time because you are IN the arena. In our box it was plush with a BIG TV, big plates of fruit, generous portions of candied cashews, sliced vegetables and rack of lamb was served with several different dips provided. This box was about 200 feet from the court so the game is going on in the distance (fortunately I brought my binoculars). The patrons of the box spent the entire game chatting in the back with their drinks and chip dips. The way I figure it each seat cost about $250 for that game including everything. Thats $500 for the two of us. This was not some special game it was simply a Laker game, one of 41 for the season. Playoff games will cost MORE. $500 for a basketball game, incredible. Now Im from the old school. Im down on the hot dog and as close to the court as I can get. I like to have the players fall over my chair as they dive for the ball. Im down with the first row in the bleachers so I can yell at the opposing left fielder and he can HEAR me and turn around and flip me off. This new economics is really an alien landscape. But get used to it because thats the way its going to keep going. $128 for one ticket to see Joni. Whew. Years ago I used to go to the Fillmore and the Avalon and Winterland sometimes four nights in a row if I really liked the band. The Who, Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac. etc. It cost $6.95. I used to go to Giants games for 90 CENTS and stand 10 feet behind Roberto, Willie and Hank Aaron. Catch a ball and take it home. Im not trying to say see how much better it was in the old days. The point here is really, how are we supposed to turn our kids onto this great stuff if it costs so much to do that. When the Giants games cost 90 cents my neighbor used to take 10 of us kids. One night he would and the next day we would go back with another parent and see Marichal pitch against Koufax. This cant truly be done any more. But THAT is why I still have the love for baseball that I have. The economics are smothering the passing of the great live experience to the next generation in its crib. Our kids will think that the WEB is the ultimate experience as opposed to the magic of the personal live experience. No set of speakers in the living room or attached to the PC regardless of how expensive will ever replace a room full of marshall stacks. You didnt hear JImi Hendrix, you FELT Jimi Hendrix. John Entwhistles Bass socked you in the stomach. Today he would be a two inch box on a flat screen. Another thing that got me about 10 years ago was the dehumanising effect of the stadium shows. Held at the gate until the first act began to play (so much for the fans of the first band on) then allowed through "pens" in pulses like cattle. This caused me to vow never to go to an outdoor show again. Its all changing for the worse IMHO. Having said all that I think of our faire Joni. The PWWAM show. The Chicago show. The art exhibit in LA of her paintings. Wallys trip to LA. It made me feel a special love for this artist who is one of the very few fighting this trend. One of the very few that at least some can get close to. The latest shows seem to be held in the somewhat smaller venues and for that there should be thanks. The ticket prices need to be higher because the production is bound to be large even in the smaller place. The cost is constant. Now if we could only get Joni to play two weeks in a small club somewhere with piano and acoustic guitar. Fortunately for me some of my favorites like Ry Cooder and Van Morrison do play such places. My concluding thoughts are that first Im glad I got to experience the best music of all time at the cost I did but I cant hold it against the artists today. Its the industry thats to blame. That and truly the people themselves. If they didnt pay $125,000 for a luxury "suite" they couldnt sell a $14.95 sandwhich or a $6.00 hot dog which is served there. Think about THAT. You used to get to see Led Zepplin from three feet away for $7.00. Now you get a hot dog for that amount.........BUT.....its a GOURMET hot dog. I am on the Joni Mitchell discussion list too, since she is my favorite female musical artist. She is about to tour (very rare for her since she has post-polio syndrome and finds being on the road too difficult these days) and will be performing in each of the cities she plays with a 70 piece orchestra consequently ticket prices are high for these shows (I will post the tentative show-dates at the bottom of this post for those who might be interested). The latest shows seem to be held in the somewhat smaller venues and for that there should be thanks. The ticket prices are higher because the production is bound to be large even in the smaller place. Now you get a hot dog for that amount..............at least its a GOURMET hot dog. <<< Tour info for Joni: Dates and locations for Joni's Both Sides Now tour. These days the family has been taken out of the picture when it comes to entertainment. A family of four in Detroit cannot go to a baseball game for under $200 (with tickets, parking, drinks, snacks and a program) that can mean a weeks wages to a lower-middle class family. I am a single mother, I hate that cost has to be such a mitigating factor in deciding what, culturally, I can show my son first-hand. Every once in a while my boss will give me company seats to a football or hockey game and I can sit in decent seats for only the cost of parking, drinks, maybe snacks (souvenirs are out of the question). Since Joni has changed the venue of her Detroit show from the Fox Theater to Pine Knob, odds are that the ticket prices will be significantly lower and will make it more affordable. Can anyone help? I am trying to remember which tour it was that I bought a white sleeveless T-shirt with one of Joni's original collage designs printed on the front (snips of photographs and lots of red) I know it had to have been in the 80's. If anyone knows the shirt I'm talking about please let me know which tour it was (I could scan it and send it to someone if they think they might recognize it!) Thanks. Someone gave me tickets to a Raptors (basketball) game last year, up in the nosebleed section - these may have cost $15-20 each if I had had to pay for them. I took my son, who was 8 at the time. Even though I got the tickets free, the kid wants a souvenir, so I bought him a pair of cheapo binoculars (purple with the Raptors logo on them) - they were broken the next day and cost me about $10 (and that was one of the cheapest things they had.) Matthew has a pretty short attention span and has difficulty dealing with lots of noise, so he wanted to leave after about half-an-hour. Nowadays, when the kids want to see a sports event, I take them to one of the baseball games played in the local parks (anything from 6-yr-olds to adults). It's free and you can leave whenever you feel like it without feeling ripped off, and the kid gets the sense of the game with, in my opinion, much more of a sportspersonlike attitude, particularly amongst the younger kids, where some of the coaches actually DO emphasize playing a good game as opposed to winning at all costs. (We're not talking about hockey where being an "enforcer" and bashing people over the head with your stick seems more important than how you skate or handle a stick these days - parents of 8-yr-olds have been heard yelling at their kid to "kill" some other kid, and that (and the cost!) are why my kids aren't in organised sports. ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca (the former cateri@hotmail) _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? He said the concert has been confirmed (finally) and tickets will go on sale Monday 3-27 at 10:00 a.m. Unusual that it's not a Saturday, but that's what he said too. That's good news since ticketmasters won't be as busy on a Monday morning. For anyone in the Palm Beach area, that's good news too since their box office is only open on the week days. However he did say that it wasn't worth my drive across the state since their box office goes through ticketmasters too. The best way to get tickets is like someone previously mentioned - thru American Express Gold Card. Since he was in charge of the VIP boxes (which really do go seasonally for $12190), he didn't have the info on the rest of the seats. According to him AMEX Gold card sells the first 10 rows in sect. 5,6 & 7 which he thought were better seats than sections 1,2 &3 (unless you're lucky enough to get in the first few rows). The ticket info should be on their website tomorrow, possibly tonight. I'll let yall know if I find out any further info Yippee, Joni in the sunshine state!!!! Too often folks our age & stage only want to see "big-name" acts which are going to be asking big-name prices. I'll bet most of us also have access to smaller clubs featuring either smaller names or folks that you've never even heard of. Sometimes you can get in for as little as $5 cover charge. Many of the better shows I've seen in my lifetime were shows where I had no idea what I was in for. I saw The Pretenders, REM, The B-52's when they were just playing dives. Likewise, I've seen folks like Keb Mo, Dave Alvin, Jonatha Brooke in a *very* intimate setting, just by taking a chance on an unknown. Remember, Joni played all those 2nd Fret, Club 47, Cellar Club shows for $1.50 and when she started nobody knew what they in for! Unfortunately, our schedule for the summer series won't be announced until late March/early April, and generally goes on sale one of the first Sundays in April. However, you should be aware that this is a special "Mini-Series" sale where in order to purchase tickets, you must buy seats for at least two (2) shows in the series. Individual shows will go on sale through TicketMaster later on. I'd suggest checking out our website at http://www.atlantaconcerts.com towards the end of the month to see if the schedule's been released, and when it is take a look to see if there are any other shows that look worthwhile rather than waiting to see what's left by the time the shows go on sale individually. If you know anyone in the Atlanta area, you may want to consider perhaps splitting the package with them since you live out of town. Hope this helps! I AM HAVING THE HARDEST TIME PICKING WHICH SONGS TO PLAY!!! I know this is impossible, I have been trying for days, but would you be so kind as to give me either your favorite song from each album, or songs that you feel would be especially relevant, or songs you think would mesh well with this album (pardon my run-on sentence!). Not that impossible! Below are the favourite songs from each album, as decided by a poll run by Bob (SCJoniGuy) last year. For some reason I kept all the results - I must have known they'd come in handy! STAS - Cactus Tree Clouds - That Song About The Midway LOTC - Rainy Night House Blue - A Case Of You FTR - Woman Of Heart And Mind MOA - Love Or Money HOSL - Sweet Bird Hejira - Amelia DJRD - Don Juan's Reckless Daughter Mingus - tie between The Wolf That Lives in Lindsay and The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines WTRF - Chinese Cafe DED - Ethiopia C&S - The Same Situation CMIARS - Secret Place S&L - tie between Amelia and Hejira NRH - Two Grey Rooms TI - 3-way tie between The Sire of Sorrow, Turbulent Indigo and Magdalene Laundries TTT - tie between Love Puts On A New Face and Harlen in Havana The votes (obviously) aren't in for Both Sides Now, but I'll put in my vote for Comes Love! I don't know how you'd pick 8 songs for this - it seems an impossible task. Good luck, and I hope this helps! Personally (from the above list, in no particular order) I'd go for: Cactus Tree Two Grey Rooms Chinese Cafe Magdalene Laundries Woman of Heart and Mind Don Juan's Reckless Daughter Hejira The Sire of Sorrow Hell _______________________________ "I don't believe in livin' in the middle with available extremes" - Carole King hell@ihug.co.nz ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #105 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe onlyjoni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
