As this is in my home, and I do not know many of you personally, NO ONE will be admitted without the questionnaire completely filled out. Tunings allow a chord to be played simpler than the conventional way. A "c" chord in either open or Barre form covers three frets. In a "C" tuning it is played without even using the left hand. Other "chords" are played with a simple barring of two or three strings. My guess however is that the truth is neither Bobs or Colins. I think its because with open tunings you get all kinds of other notes and sounds, dissonant and harmonic tones that augment the chords natural sound and provide a more colorful and different blend of notes. Something that undoubtedly appealed to Joni's artiste mentality. Most players dont play other tunings because its too much a pain in the butt to tune and retune. But if you go through the trouble its a world all its own. marcel deste. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 08:25:23 EST From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: Tickets secured! It's a little arty, but poignant anyway. "Michael from mountains" sounds like the kind of name young people give each other when they want to express tenderness, want to maintain privacy, but fear being tied down and fear being too much like their parents. That is, "Sweetheart" would be completely unacceptable in this context. To me, the Joni persona who sings could be singing to a real "you," some young woman she'd overheard referring shyly to her friend/beau/lover as "MFM" or she could be talking about herself. You didn't ask me, but I feel you would generate more response if you'd share with others what your associations are when you listen to the song. I wish you joyful success with your music. A quick glance through subject headers in my in-box seems to indicate that it hasn't been mentioned. The Toronto Star has a weekly short feature in their Saturday edition called "Paint by Numbers", which features a work of art (usually a painting) and explains, using numbers on the painting, what it "means". This Saturday's edition featured Joni's "Front Side Now" from BSN in fulll colour. (the Joni-in-the-bar/ heart-on-sleeve, map-of-Canada-on-the-coaster one). I've checked the Star's website to see if this particular item happens to be there, but was unable to find it. I do have the clipping, but no scanning abilities. As a result, I transcribed it. My comments explain where on the painting the "numbers" would appear. Et voila... _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Text of "Paint by Numbers" feature in Toronto Star, Saturday, March 18, 2000. Front Side Now, Oil on Canvas, 1999 - -- article by Jennie Punter-- Born Nov. 7, 1943, Roberta Joan Anderson, otherwise known as Joni Mitchell, grew up in Saskatchewan and studied at the Alberta College of Art in the early '60s before becoming one of the most influential singer-songwriters in rock history. "Front Side Now" is a self-portrait on the cover of Mitchell's latest recording Both Sides Now (out this Tuesday). It and its companion, "Back Side Now" (the album's back-cover painting, an over-the-shoulder view revealing the shelves of bottles behind the bar and the artist's painted thumbnail hooked through her blonde locks), are included in Voices, the first-ever retrospective exhibition of Mitchell's art, running June 30 to Sept. 3 at the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon. Voices' installation incorporates many of Mitchell's song-lyric poems and recordings that relate to the artworks. Gallery director Gilles Hebert, also the curator of Voices, says the show's 80 works, culled from hundreds of pieces in Mitchell's collection, include "everything from her felt-marker and line drawings of the '60s, to photo-based work from the '80s and her recent oil-based paintings". 1. [on the title to-right of the painting - presumably on the album, not on the painting itself!] "Both Sides Now" is Mitchell's folk-pop classic and the title of her latest album, which includes a jazz re-interpretation of the song. Her original version appeared on her 1969 album Clouds. "Both Sides Now" was a smash 1968 hit for Judy Collins, and has been covered by numerous singers. 2. [next to Joni's face] Mitchell creates the artwork for each of her album covers and appears in self-portrait in most of them. "I discovered that not only is visual art Joan's first love, but she has maintained a very strong connection to Saskatchewan and the Prairies," says Hebert. "Her parents still live here, and she comes through quite often". 3. [Joni's sleeve] The artist, a former teen model, literally wears her heart on her green sleeve. 4. [the coaster] The small, gray bar coaster contains two maps of Canada. It was inspired by her lyric, "On the back of a cartoon coaster/ In the blue TV screen light/ I drew a map of Canada/ Oh Canada/ And I sketched your face on it twice" from "A Case of You", a song from Mitchell's 1971 album Blue, given a jazz re-interpretation on Both Sides Now. 5. [the glass and its contents] While Mitchell refers to wine in many tunes, including "A Case of You" ("you are in my blood like holy wine"), Hebert says the red liquid in the glass "could be wine or it could be cranberry juice - Joan loves cranberry juice". - --30-- __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Catherine, signing off to tend her carpal tunnel syndrome flaring up due to over-enthusiastic typing... ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca (the former cateri@hotmail) _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I am only about one quarter the way through, but I just read an interview with JM where she stated that polio was the reason that tunings were so appealing to her. As Colin mentioned, she did not have the agility in her left hand to get the sounds out like she wanted them with normal tunings. Tunings were a "godsend". Motyl" first of all, Thank you, Jody for the CD of the 1973 songs. Right now, I am listening to For Free and everytime I hear the opening chords of this song--on whatever version--I feel a complete sense of sadness. There is a sadness becuz nobody stops to hear the player but, more importantly, there is a sense of loss in the narrator/singer (hence, her sense of sadness) that she cannot play "real good for free" anymore. She got the velvet curtain calls, the good hotel, the limousines, and the gentlemen escorts. The loss arises from the singer/narrator not being able to go back (a kind of "You Can't Go Home Again") to the simplicity of playing what she wants, when she wants. Almost as if she realizes, with hearing him playing for free, that she has bought into a system that will never allow her again to play for free. She will always be answering to someone, giving into something, having to go somewhere. "I meant to go over and ask for a song, maybe put on some kind of harmony, but the signal changed and I heard his refrain . . . " is her moving forward on the road she chose, with the echoes of her old life disappearing into the air behind her. Imagine how the attitude of later career Joni would imbue this song! Mmm. Howard M. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 23:04:28 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Ticket prices Don't worry too much - the Greek has either four or five levels of pricing - the lowest is around $32 and the other venues will probably follow along the same range. And it is a smaller than usual venue, like the others scheduled, so even the cheapest seats shouldn't be too horrific. On the other hand, look at what you are getting - Joni, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Mark Isham, Peter Erskine and a 71 piece orchestra of the creme de la creme. We'd probably pay a good chunk just to see Wayne or Herbie alone. P.S. to Ashara - loved your Jonifest jingle!
