Is it worth it to schlep to a Ticketmaster outlet instead of phoning or computing? >> Deb: I wondered the same thing when Joni/Dylan/Morrison came to the Gorge in WA a couple of years ago. At that time, online ticket sales started one hour after the ticket booths opened, so I decided to go to a TicketMaster outlet. I chose a TM outlet that was in the back of a grocery store, figuring not many people knew about that one. I got there about 20 minutes early and was delighted to see there was no line. That's when I saw a little sign posted on the window stating the line forms outside. My heart sank when I went outside and saw a MILLION people lined up, with the line extending down the sidewalk, around the corner of the building, and into the parking lot. Some of these people had been waiting for hours. Then, to make it completely unfair to those who had waited in line for so long, they had everyone draw a number out of a bag. The number you drew determined the order you'd be in line when they actually started selling the tix. I lucked out when a fellow Jonifan who lives across the street from me drew the number "000," and she asked me if I'd like her to get my tickets for me! So we were the first in line for purchasing. By the time the tickets were in our hands (less than 5 minutes later), all of the close-in section had been sold out. If my neighbor hadn't been there, I would have had to wait until the number I drew came up (250-something), and I would have been waiting well over an hour in line (meanwhile, the online sales would have already begun). So, knowing that, what I would do next time is go to the TM outlet and wait in line, and if I drew a terribly high number, I'd just rush back home and try to snag a ticket online an hour later. It sounds like it would be quite a drive for you, but perhaps that way would work for you if you know anyone with a computer who lives not-too-far from a TM outlet. One of the wonderful benefits of belonging is that John M. loves his biggest fans up close and personal. When tour dates are announced for Mellencamp, members emails to the fan club and can reserve up to 4 tickets for any show. They confirm your request and then on the night of the show, you just show up at the box office, pay cash, and are guaranteed seats within the first five rows. The fan club sends a list to John's tour-management people and they have a list at the will-call window. It sure beats waiting in line for possibly only mediocre seats. Kakki NP: Storytellers - Neil - Long May You Run ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000 01:58:18 EST From: CarltonCT@aol.com Subject: Joni's guitar shapes, rarities, drones, snow lyrics I took a cursory look through guitar tablatures of all Joni's different periods and see in terms of finger placement, what I've theorized about before -- that in Joni's later periods, the upper strings are often left as drones, and that through the years, the shapes generally become simpler. In her early songs, such as I HAD A KING or MIDWAY, there is more use of the upper strings, more finger stretching all together, more complicated shapes. I think the later tunings she plays in, particularly those of her own device, accommodate simpler shapes. The thing that always amazes me every time I learn one of her songs is that something so rich and beautiful appears to be very simple when it is dissected. One thing apparent from the very beginning of Joni's music is that most of her songs have a droney element of some kind, and the melody is erratically echoed in the dominant drone which is sometimes the bottom string, sometimes the top one. I also see in most of her songs what are trademark kinds of transitions between the chords which often hold strongly to most notes from a previous chord, with some transitions which vary only by one note, a kind of subtle progression you hear in music from Miles Davis and other jazz musicians of the Sixties. Any way, sometimes I get mesmerized just listening to the guitar only on Joni's songs, a pleasure rivaled only by love making. It was only natural for her to take to the dulcimer, and Steve D. might correct me on this, which always has a drone. Why did Joni stop writing for the dulcimer after BLUE? Thanks to the thorough discographer Bob Muller, I finally have in my possession a tape of rarities including the following unheard songs: Brandy Eyes, Winter Lady, Mr. Blue and Eastern Rain. Maybe they are not the best of Joni's songs, but even her rejects are going to be fascinating. Thanks Bob! And before spring arrives (we already have the heady smells of orange blossoms and jasmine after a few dry days here), I just had to share my own lyrics with anyone who wants to read them from a new song. Here in L.A., the rain has abided and our mountain tops are covered with snow. I was on the freeway when someone in a truck drove past me who had been "to the snow" and brought back the trophy of a snowman in the payload of his Ford Bronco. I was eating a powdered sugar doughnut at the same time, and all of it touched on a powerful memory. The lyrics of this song are very sweet, but the melody and chords are melancholy and droney -- it's probably in D flat minor or something. THE SUGAR ZONE The time is drawing near While you stay or disappear Down an icy road to shiver, to shiver all alone? But if you would come inside We can take an inner ride Down a river, a buttered rum river To the Sugar Zone. CHORUS: The wind will howl like an old screech owl And the cold will creep outside the clapboard But we're warm inside as our lips collide And we'll burn against each other 'neath the blankets (If you stay) While within we're melting like milk chocolates (If you stay) Darlin', we could sleep so tight If you stay with me tonight We'll count spun sugar sheep To a deep marshmallow sleep While outside A billion ballerinas glide To candy coat the countryside And in the morning when we wake Your car is frosted like a cake We'll be snowbound But all around In six track surround Is the Sugar Zone CHORUS: The time is drawing near Will you stay or disappear? - - Clark NP: BSN ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #96 ******************************** ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe onlyjoni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
