His voice is the first thing that makes one notice because it has this quality of not being too "produced" or "packaged". His turns of phrase in his songs are as evocative as Joni's. I listened this morning to Franks' THE ART OF TEA album and especially liked his "I Don't Know Why I'm So Happy I'm Sad" because in a single burst of feelings, he was able to capture that particular shade of ambivalent feelings we all felt in our lifetimes. The same way when Joni sang "All I Want" where there was this repetition of "I Hate You" and then redeeming it with "I Love You Some" that seems to negate the "I Hate You" feelings. That ambivalence and the songwriter's ability to capture that feeling is to me, a mark of a genius. My favorite Michael Franks album is: "Tiger in The Rain". Paul, Thank you so much for alerting us. I can't think of a better venue than the Greek for this in L.A. I'm praying I will be in the country in May, but if, God forbid, I'm not, I've already arranged for the party at my place anyway ;-) I'm really regretting that I did not chat with Peter Erskine when I had the chance back in December. He and his new band with Bob Sheppard and Dave Carpenter were backing up Otmaro Ruiz that night. Erskine has such a warm and friendly persona and was very approachable but the little club seemed filled with music heavyweights that night, including Lyle Mays, all seeming to pay homage to him and I felt a bit like I was a fly on the wall at a private recording session ;-) From the looks of his schedule he is going to be touring constantly over the next year, but I hope he will maybe stop in here at the list again in the future. I just hope that Peter Erskine's tour schedule is correct. I've been let down in the past when I heard Joni was going to be making a touring stop in Florida. First was in '98 when she was supposed to perform in Ft. Lauderdale and in Orlando. I was filled with excitement for weeks, which turned to depression when she cancelled those two cities. It turned out fine though! Costly, but fine! I made the journey up to Atlanta. As I look at Peter Erskine's touring website, it says that Joni will be in Miami on May 17th at the Coral Sky Ampitheatre. Well, the Coral Sky Ampitheatre is now called the Mars Music Ampitheatre and it's NOT in Miami. It is in West Palm Beach (2 hours from Miami). Not only does ticketmasters lack any info on the concert, but the same goes with the Ampitheatre. I spoke with the manager of the Mars Music Ampitheatre and she wasn't even aware of any tenative engagements for JM. She did tell me that tickets go on sale for Santana's kick off tour in July, and Britney Spears is scheduled for September, but NO INFO on Joni! I don't know anything about the booking and promoting of concerts, but it seems to me that if you want good ticket sales to fill this 22000 outdoor venue, you should have a commitment prior to 2 months. The B-52s are about as different from Joni as you can get, but they remain one of my favorite fun, dance bands for over two and a half decades now. Advantage 1: Joni music has been played there before, both places, often. Advantage 2: my family was there (I was a kid there) before WXRT was built, on the "prairie" as we called it then, just down the alley. The hours I rode my bike there... anyway, XRT sponsored your last Chicago tour, so picture this: we close the alley, we'll put the orchestra in the firehouse parking lot conveniently located right behind dad's yard and next to XRT, all of the Chicago JMDLers and those who can come JMDLers can fit in the alley, XRT can broadcast live and on the internet to connect to the JMDL everywhere, and come up with a more taking it to the streets, let's get back to the garden (my mom's garden is where you can sing) idea than this! In case of rain, we will squeeze everyone in the basement; that's been done before (although my parents weren't usually home then...). Hey, I can also suggest the Lane Tech stadium, North Park College hump (the hill on which we had all our outdoor concerts), or Portage Park. Or even the Petrillo bandshell in Grant Park. But I like dad's backyard idea the best, Joni, so how bout it? Channel 9 will cover that in a flash, and that reaches everywhere... a little major pr for the new album... how bout it, Joni? Hey, if I were on tour, I'd play at your house if you had all my albums like I have all of yours! :-) Or even if you didn't, just because you're you! :-) (the Rev) Vince Wolfebite@aol.com wrote: > hello listers: > > i'll be curious to see where she plays in chicago- at whatever alledged 'fox > theater'! I hope the SoCal JMDLers will meet up again to attend this event! I had some deja vu Wednesday when we attended a Mighty Ducks (a hockey team) game at the Pond in Anaheim which is where some of us saw Joni two Mays ago now. I said to my husband, see the other goalie across the ice? That's where Joni was. Ha! I saw Joni at the Greek Theater for the Mingus tour with Jaco, Pat, Lyle, etc. in about 1980 or so. I still have the concert program. It's a wonderful venue. I'll look forward to making our plans soon!
