There she is, cigarette smouldering in hand, glass of red wine lingering on the wooden table and that look of studied ennui masking her face. If Joni wants to sing the wine bar blues then Joni can sing the wine bar blues so, needless to say, this album of standards and old favourites will soundtrack many a smoky basement and late-night clash of hearts, just as "Blue" was probably responsible for more candles-in-wine-bottles than any other album bar "Heart Of Gold". Irresistible easy mockery aside, "Both Sides Now" (even the album title sounds like a godamn fortysomething radio documentary) is a classy selection of moody grooves, dark corners and Joni stretching her voice into alluring shapes and forms. Unlike George Michael's ropey collection, but somewhat akin to Bryan Ferry's "As Time Goes By", Mitchell's take on the greats makes for a startlingly innovative album. The players help in this regard - jazz supremos like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Mark Isham, Chuck Berghofer and Peter Erskine - the songs too are a major asset and Larry Kien's direction is on-point but really, it's the singer who makes the songs and no-one can quite produce and package the goods like Joni Mitchell on form. And take it from me, she is on form. From "At Last" to "You've Changed", each song is treated to a major dab of Mitchell's unique blues-soul lotion. Few can quite capture the low swings and dips of "Stormy Weather" and "I Wish I Were In Love Again" like this - and even then endeavour to make the song sound their own. It's this quality which makes "Both Sides Now" an album which gently but persistently locks into your memory. One for the wine bar of your heart. - - Jim Carroll * Mariana, in Argentina ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Mar 2000 08:21:46 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Covers Project Update In a message dated 3/5/00 2:24:11 AM US Central Standard Time, evian@sk.sympatico.ca writes: << Bob, if you need the Joshua Redman song, I have the cd, and my brother in law is a Nazareth freak for some reason, so I am sure I can snag "This Flight Tonight" from him. I have "River" from: Diane Reeves Roseanne Cash Indigo Girls Travis Betty Buckley (On Vol. 1) Holly Cole (Vol. 1) The only rivers I'm missing are the Tigris & the Euphrates! :~) BSN from Dianne Reeves is also on its way from Joseph. I finished the master disc for #2 yesterday and listened to it today whilst scrubbing the kitchen floor. I was definitely wishing I had a river to skate away on then! :~) But one thing that amazed me was the disparity of genres that Joni's genius stretches across. This disc has a 60's country version of Urge for Going (which may not be everyone's cup of tea but it really gets under your skin), a Motown version of All I Want (which I really like by the way, DJ), and a hip-hop song that samples Joni and shows that she is truly a composer of all styles, revered by any artist who appreciates a great piece of music! I'm doing my best to get this project wrapped up so I can start sharing this incredible joy and tribute... I saw a short list of what is going to be on the compilation and wondered if you added "Blue" by Sarah McLachlan & A case of you by Tori Amos? I love the Sarah McLachlan version, but the Tori Amos is just OK. When the compilation is done could i get a copy please? Thanks, and if you need these versions I have them and could contribute! Peace>>>Craig ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Mar 2000 22:53:07 EST From: Dflahm@aol.com Subject: the sequel to JAZZ TAKES (sjc) Six of the seven JM tunes are now completed and I am very, very happy with what I'm hearing. Now I'd like some suggestions for the title. It must include the words "JONI MITCHELL" (duh) and can't be too cumbersomely long. The best I've been able to do so far is MORE JAZZ TAKES ON JONI MITCHELL or (since four of my pieces will be on it as well) MORE THAN JAZZ TAKES ON JONI MITCHELL. These make sense, but scintillate NOT. I am not going to say which JM songs I've recorded and even suggest that listeners play the CD without looking at the titles. I think the surprise factor makes a significant impact and wish to safeguard that as long as possible. Thanks in advance for any ideas. A title from the JMDL certainly rates a thank you on the sleeve. Bob ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Mar 2000 20:48:32 -0700 From: Bounced Message Subject: new to the list From: "Garret McDermott" Date: Sun, 5 Mar 2000 23:31:57 -0000 Being a relatively new Joni fan, it won't surpsrise you that I am new to this list. I have lurked around for a while reading others posts. I read both the "Joni as a gay icon" and "Joni's smoking" threads with much interest, but did not add to the discussions for fear of my opinions not being relevant, vaild or important enough to warrant posting. So, I have decided now to add to the list without contributing to any threads. I am not tremendously knowledgeable about Joni or her life and haave learned something new every day o the list! I was wondering if anybody could tell me if there are any good books or biographys that i could read that would help to enlighten me some. I am a nineteen year old science student from Ireland, who discovered Joni about a year ago (although I have always loved Chelsea Morning). I have never met any Joni fans, but have managed to convince some friends that she exists, so, I'm sure you can imagine, I find it amazing that so many Joni fans can be found in the same place. At first I was convinced that the members of this list would be a collection of reverential fanatics who could see absolutely no flaws in JM. I am glad to say I was mistaken. Instead, I have found many articulate people with intelligent opinions and views regarding Joni, and, it seems, life in general. I have two main points to make (besides intrducing myself, that is). Firstly, i bought BSN today in Virgin here in Dublin. I got on the first bus home with a smile on my face! I found myself engrossed in the lyrics. I had never heard any of the songs (except, of course, BSN and ACOY) so I had much to look forward to. What can I say? I loved the album. I subjected (Mot Juste????) thte family to it all day. I'm not too sure about ACOY, but the rest is fantastic. Secondly, someone was speaking of Nazareth recently. Their version of This Flight Tonight is available on their 1996 Greatest Hits album, or on their Live at the Beeb recording released in 1998. I have to admit that my dads old record collection came in handy again today, i found a copy of This Flight Tonight on vinyl single, and was taken aback by it. IT is a very good version. Also, i may be repeating somebody elses words here: Travis swept the boards at the Brit awards recently. In my mind they are certainly the band of 1999. A fairly good album"The Man Who" complimented by five excellent singles. On the "Why does it always rain on me?" single they cover Urge for Going. As if that is not a mighty tip of the hat, they cover River on the turn single. this isn't a fantastic version, but I do think it's what any fan would sound like attempting to sing the song in as loyal a fashion as possible to the original. I've spoken of a new friend and fellow Joni lover, lawyer Dave, here before. He's a NYC lawyer that also has a house in our neighborhood near Portland OR, which he's updating (that's where I come in.) So anytime I'm working at his house while he's back from NYC we talk music, Joni, compare NY and Portland music scenes, different artists, etc. BTW, he was blown away with BSN, I mean he went totally gah-gah! It was really cute, I took BSN over while he was here last week and he just put it on repeat so he could listen to it over and over and over. The biggest grin came to his face at the very first notes! (He couldn't find BSNLE in NYC, so he hadn't heard any of it until he heard my copy. It was a real treat for me to watch his initial reaction. ;-) Anyway while we were talking music clubs, where Portland is strong in blues clubs, he said NYC is great for piano bars and cabaret. When he stated this, I asked if he knew of you. Not only does he know of you, but has heard you play and even has met you before. Small world, eh! Seems a friend of his used to work with you on a regular basis. So I thought I'd ask if you remember Mila Iliva? Dave said you used to play (and arrange?) for her about ten years ago. Jog your memory? ;-) Peace Penny :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Grace dies when it becomes us verses them......Philip Yancey ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #89 ******************************** ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe onlyjoni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
