"People live their lives with your music as a soundtrack. I have..." So, so beautiful. At times this universe can be so crystalline, beautiful. Makes me rejoice I am alive. This review affirmed that. - --Having a wonderful time here in the midwest. The weather has been joyful. My head is spining with an evening of moving paint, glazing layers, and modeling form with soft brushes. I'm a lucky guy. I've found my Joy. JOHN. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 12:02:04 +0100 From: Adriano Lucatello Subject: I went to Staten Island, Sharon... I went to Staten Island, Sharon to buy myself a mandolin... Oh well, I meant to say I went to Ricordi's (a local record shop here in Trieste, Italy) to buy myself a cd by Carlos Nuñez (Os amores libres-Free loves) which I could not find anywhere else in town... I found it and since the letter N is close to the M, I glanced to see which Joni's cds they had on stock. Last year they deliberately did not get any "Taming the Tiger" ones since they said it wasn't requested... ;-( That's why I decided to always get her cds only from the usual suspects in the States, infact my BSN-LE has been shipped my way by CD NOW last week and should arrive any time next week... But guess what I could see in this noisy, large and too popular store, in an old and sleepy town in Italy??? Joni smoking in front of my face... Yes, the cover of Both Sides Now, not the LE but apparently the normal release, with a normal (and I suppose safer) jewel case... the obvious happened... I will now end up with two copies of the same cd but I could not resist... something like that in THAT shop???!!! So I rushed home with my loot, waited till everyone else in my family had gone away for some afternoon's chores (my daughter is anti-Joni or at least she acts that way) and when all was quite I played it very loud on my stereo... this version was perfect... I made a miniDisk with that and carried that everywhere I went for the rest of the afternoon... and all day I was walking on clouds... passing mentally through all the various stages of a modern love affair... I am again at phase 1... thrilled! I did not find the orchestra at all overwhelming but suited to that kind of standards and the kind of atmosphere Joni wanted to recreate... but I'd rather not speak about music but just listen to it... well, it was a fantastic surprise and I still have to recover from the joy I faced... That's all folks... I just felt I had to tell you that... I have just been told that there is a 7 page interview in yesterday's Times. Did anyone see it? Does anyone have a spare copy they would like to sell to me? I have just come back from the tour of Norwich and Bury St Edmunds with The Magic Box and am dead tired. Hopefully everyone is well. I have spent the day catching up on digests #94 to present. Remind me to never get so involved with my life that I forget the list. My copy of Both Sides Now arrived with nary a scratch or glue glob. I opened it and was a bit disappointed by the lithos and song ³cards² at first. Listening to the disc, however, made all of the difference to me. Later I revisited the lithos and decided as many have to group them in a matted setting. Yes, a sleeve would have been nice to hold the lyric cards and lithos, but I am keeping the disc in a separate jewel case, so that problem is solved. The thought of hearing Joni perform these songs live with an orchestra is giving me serious chills. So much to give thanks for. I got the information on the Henry Diltz show on TLC too late for viewing. That¹s one big boo hoo that some lovely lister will dry my eyes over. Do I hear video tape tree? Who was it that mentioned our being so fortunate to be blessed with two new Joni CDs in such a short span of time. Yes, fair lister, you are correct. Our petty little wars pale in the light of Joni¹s gift to us. Lastly, the word tolerance comes to mind. We have all suffered a loss with Wally¹s passing. You would think that we might stop and reflect. Some of the wine has gone bitter, yet most is still so sweet. This weekend was full of Joni-related stuff...we had some friends over last night for dinner, and I had BSN in the mix, along with some JT, Miles, and Montreaux. We sipped from a bottle of German wine that Winfried had sent me that I had been saving for a special occassion, and later that night we enjoyed the Kirsch Batons (liquer-filled candies) that Lori in France had sent along. What a wonderful bunch you guys are!! Of course, the BSN went well as dinner music, and I enjoyed it again today as "rainy day" music as I was scrubbing pots & pans with grey skies outside... Her sister walked into our nook and said "you've got Joni Mitchell on your wall!". (I've got the TI and TTT signed lithos framed side by side) Turns out she's a big fan! We couldn't talk much as they were only there for a brief visit but I put the new CD on in the background while they were here as she had heard about it but hadn't bought it yet. Later from her mouth came the words "She's never gotten the recognition she deserves". They're out there, We're not alone huh? I of course told her about the list and just got her email addy today... - -- Phyliss Golden Fig Ceramics http://www.bodywise.com/consultants/bpward ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 19:39:43 EST From: MP123A321@aol.com Subject: Major Joni Content - Diltz On TLC last night I have to come from the shadows for this. To whomever posted to the list about the Henry Diltz program , thanks you. This was quite a rare treat. Henry's sense of humor about the whole era made this extra enjoyable. Great footage of Joni, Eagles, Jackson Browne,CSNY and others. I believe it was mentioned once on this list that in one of Henry's photos Joni is writing on a tablet during a long car ride next to Graham Nash. When Henry magnified the picture in later years he could read the lyrics to "Willy". Lots of Rock n Roll history and insider info in this show. A bit of the Jim Morrison part was very sad. The show that followed the Diltz program had the most pristine video of Buffalo Springfield performing Mr. Soul I've ever seen! Thanks again for the early warning....a miracle I caught it wading through the smoking posts...yawn. Stress has been rather high lately, as I'm working on things for school, trying to plan a junior year piano recital, accompany a play, organize a book of poetry, AND work on my Joni project. Perhaps my nerves were a bit frazzled and reading the smoking conversations filled with what I perceived as attacks on people for being either smokers and non-smokers, blah blah blah...anyway, I am sorry. I acted in haste rather than with my usual calmness. I hope that everyone on the list accepts this olive branch and we can start things anew. I must also admit that I did not know the meaning of "NJC." Now, I will know to use caution and a few grains of salt when reading anything that could possibly react adversely with the tattered nerves of an undergraduate student! Here's to a new beginning! From: KJHSF@aol.com Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 16:23:24 EST In reference to MusicMatt's decision to un.sub.scribe, Siresorrow writes: I hope he'll be back. I'll repeat that my dealings with Matthew in order to assist him with his academic thesis on Joni's Music have been a delightful experience. He is a gratious young man, and my correspondence with him has caused me to realize that there is an upcoming young generation of Joni-fans who have this wonderful resource (LOVE TO WALLY) and are turning to it to make connections with other fans. Ten years ago, I was a youngster in Ohio and surrounded by a big silence where Joni's work was concerned. Strike a bell with anyone else? Despite our brief squabble over a misunderstanding yestrday, Kate in CO's suggestion and instructions for Matt to delete NJC or re-subscribe for only Joni content was a good one, and I hope Matthew takes this suggestion in the loving way it was offered. (Thanks to kate, by the way for her to-the-point mac lesson). I'll stand by my statement that this is a lovely collection of souls. Matthew, like myself when I first joined, didn't realize how much the NJC threads can dominate this discussion list. But, that's part of the dual nature of the discussion., some Joni info that comes floating in amongst a beautiful running dialogue. What's beautiful to me about the membership is coming to understand a bit of the nature of the individuals who meet here. Some are friendly, some are cutting...and some of the newbies who are watching it from the wings just may need a little information about just how this all plays out. While we're providing that info and those suggestions to the newbies, it might be nice to take a moment and offer a warm welcome to help temper the charming spirit of some of the "older, jaded players". It's raining again in San Francisco, falling not only from midninght skies, but from skies at any given hour, these days.
