No, I don't wanna do that. I'll just whine...it won't be a pretty sight!... BUT JONI, I WANT TO FLESH THIS OUT WITH YOU! well, from an artists point of view,...from an opinionated opinion.. and on the painting: the painting will never be taken seriously, so i don't even take it seriously. (paraphrasing with my interpretation)...it won't be taken seriously because i know that i can fill galleries because of who i am, not because of my reputation as a painter, and people will come and buy whether or not they are good...but even then, what decides "good" is what so and so's fine intellect has to say.. as if she is saying, 'good' should be in the eye of the beholder. i personally just don't see anything complicated about joni's statements in this interview and i see a very consistant joni mitchell who is happy and sure of herself and confident and knowing full well what her strengths and weaknesses are. pat ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 10:19:49 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: RE: People and Songs 2-24-2000 <> Great Lou - sounds like you and I will get along just fine! ;~) <> This would be ultra-cool!! The tone reminded me of "Facelift" -- ... for godsakes Momma, I'm middle-aged you know ... -- Can anyone disagree with Joni that Gordon Lightfoot and Leonard Cohen's musical similarities to her work pretty much end at the Canadian birth certificate? I don't. Is Joni's material text deep, perhaps too much so for a shallow society? Of course. Do artists make records on loans from their label? Absolutely ... it's where the word "recoupment" comes from. Has Joni played any folk music since 1968? No. Is there a surging "jazz bandwagon" out there? No. And if Joni has enough self-awareness and character to know what her contribution to popular music really is, and an appreciation of her own originality -- great, because if you can do, and have done it -- it still ain't braggin'. I echo Don's sentiments, and like earlier posters, I was actually surprised by how *mild* Joni sounded in this interview - from the first reports, I was expecting something more blistering. I do think that Joni goes overboard sometimes about her lack of recognition in the industry. But when I caught myself starting to write about her "incessant whining," it occurred to me it seems "incessant" to us because we are reading essentially the same interview over and over. It's like a stump speech. But what she has to say about the music industry is valid and important, and those normal people (unlike us) who perhaps only read ONE Joni Mitchell article will probably experience her remarks as trenchant criticism, not incessant whining. Her "whining" is also almost always funny and entertaining - which makes it less like whining, no? Deb Messling messling@enter.net http://www.enter.net/~messling/ I love cats. I e-mailed CDNow and inquired if I could send back only the disc, because the rest of the special edition (box, lithos, etc.) was in perfect condition. They explained that in order to get a replacement I'd have to send back the entire contents. I was hesitant to do this knowing it was a limited edition and also had not received the other copy (yet) that I ordered from Reprise...my fear was that I'd end up with *no* copies! :-( But CDNow sent a return authorization along with a sticker for the package return so it didn't cost me further postage.
