K: Hi Joni J: Hello again, Kakki K: Let's take that big table outside by the heatlamp so we can smoke. J: Yeah. (Both lighting up the first of several cigarettes) J: So how does the list like the new album? K: Well, geez, you know it's a mixed reaction. Most people are very upset about the defective CDs and the chintzy special edition box and token "lithos". J: (Deep dragging on the cigarette) And then they wonder why I whine and bitch about the music industry. (loud rueful laughter) K: Yes, Joni. You see *we* on the JMDL are allowed to bitch all we want about anything under the sun, but you are not ever allowed to do the same. It is simply not tolerated. J: I think I'll try one of those martinis, Kakki. So how do they like the music - what they can hear of it? K: It seems to be running about 80-20 in favor of it so far. J: How do they like the paintings? K: Um, well. J: Yeah. (laughs) K: Well, I love them and think they are brilliant, and I love the music, too. I really can't find any fault with either, no matter how hard I try to be intellectually discerning and objective about it all. I don't know what's wrong with me. J: Yeah, you never find anything wrong and so you lose some credibility with your opinions among my more intellectually sophisticated fan base. (stubs out second cigarette) K: I know, I'm sorry Joni, I really try to give more incisive critiques, but I honestly can't come up with any weighty contra-opinions nor feel any inclination to nit-pick. I like it all, I just really like it. J: Nietzsche says "Somebody said: 'There are two persons whom I have not thought deeply about. This is the proof of my love for them'." K: Well Joni, as much as I think that you are a better philosopher than Mr. Nietzsche, I kind of like that one. K: Oh no, here comes Harper Lou - hide the cigarettes quick. J: Ah no, let's give him one. K: No, no, he's much funnier these days without them. Don't you dare give him one! Fade out with more laughter, smoke and drink accompained by the Harper playing For Free J: Hmmm, I really like that - maybe I should do a whole album of my old songs on harp. K: No, no, don't go there, Joni, please! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Feb 2000 02:23:48 -0600 From: evian Subject: Mean Spirited? Talk to the Hand! We can often have the equilibrium of "as long as we know our value," but I believe it is an equilibrium that requires maintenance. Sometimes easy to do, sometimes its a full time job, especially since not all critics who dislike her work are ignorant. It gets tough when you are want universal appeal, you don't want blind idolatry, you don't want people to misunderstand your points and yet, to lift a line from James Taylor, "painters use their eyes to tell us what they see, but when that canvas dries, we all see things differently." I am a big fan of Joni's original music and her singing and her phrasing. This work is a testament to that. And the paintings. I am a big fan of Joni's work from the 1980s-90s from the exhib I saw in London in 1990 and all I can say is... she is an excellent painter and these paintings don't do her justice, as paintings. Perhaps because she had two weeks to do them, perhaps the lithos don't sell them properly... The best painting is the one with her face-on to us, the that is called 'If you want me I'll be in the bar'. That one seems full of artistic consideration and thought more than the others (she'll probably disagree). She's a good techincal painter and they may 'go with her couch' but they are a little rushed in terms of content... IMHO The music is wonderful and I will leave it there. Much has already been said about it that I don't want to repeat another 'lush', 'rich', 'heartbreaking' etc etc. They are just words that don't really describe the scale of the music. Or the range of emotion that JOni goes through. I would say, however, that Joni doesn't take many risks, vocally, IMHO. 'You've Changed' for example. For those of you that have complained that BSN Special Edition is too unwieldy to store with your other cds.... we always knew that the special ed. was going to be in a big box from the interviews at LACE. If you didn't want to pay for something you couldn't store... wait until the general release comes out. A little harsh of me I know but you knew what you were going in for. Remembering Wally tonight. So, I'm listening and I am trying very hard to not allow this to become like an audio Nintendo 64. Let me explain: I used to love playing "regular" Nintendo with my oldest daughter, Signe. To the disgust of my ex, we would sit for hours and run Mario & Co. through the paces. I loved the boot that he could hop around in and the flying dolphins and everything else. It was great. Along comes Nintendo 64 and the 3D game. No can do. Can't think in 3D, my mindset is too stuck on SuperMario and its predecessors. And no thank you, I don't care to learn. Leave me alone with my memories of happier times, if you want me I'll be in the bar. I didn't want that to happen with BSN. But the signs are there: I cannot think of a better version of "A Case of You" than the velvet rendition from the Joni/James concerts. Lately, I've been listening to that daily. Never a big fan of BSN, I love the live version on MOA. I can't begin to think how they can be better if done differently. Other callouses over my senses are Joni's talking kinda of singing voice that is often difficult for me to hear over the instrumentation and the sometimes monotonous strum-strum of the VG80 songs. Lastly, to me, there's the SuperMario of all modern singers doing standard albums, Carly Simon's "Torch." With those smears of Vaseline on my senses, it was tough going. "A Case" felt flat to me, a lot of the songs seemed to drag, especially when I had Carly Simon's "Torch" playing next in line. Some of the songs seemed to drag, sometimes the instruments obscured her words, sometimes her singing seemed like talking. I knew that I was not enjoying it as I usually, (with the exception of DED and TI), do enjoy her work. I thought that I needed an ear enema. Which I tried to do in a way. I took Carly's CD off the disc changer. I put some David Bromberg on to whack my senses to another place. I swept my mind of comparisons and earlier works and "but I only like the OTHER version" thoughts. And tried to come to it clean and open. And lo and behold! I'm still not crazy about it. But when I listen to it with Klein's conceptual explanation in mind, beneath the smoke damaged voice, beneath the strings that, (for me), can sometimes obscure my ability to hear the singing, what I can't deny is the feeling in each and every song. It really is true that it follows the up, up and down, down, down of romance; from the giddiness of "You're My Thrill" to the weariness in "BSN," and everything in between. To mix my analogies, listening to this album is very similar to drinking a complex glass of wine: a myriad of flavors, the buzz of the alcohol, the bouquet and the aftertaste and the final swallow all ending up in a final verdict of "hmm, I think I'll have another." Maybe they don't relate to anyone. if they do, i wonder who? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Feb 2000 15:13:30 -0800 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Replacement BSN CDNow's replacement arrived today. It looks like the cd stayed secure in the box. I popped it in the player & immediately went to 'A Case of You'. It played through without a skip or flaw of any kind. I'm listening to the rest of it now just to be sure. I love this record! I too had my doubts about all those strings poured all over it at first but the more I listen the more wonderful it sounds. After all how could Joni see to it that Carly gets balled? As for my top Carly picks, Boys in the Trees and Spy are both great. And I've always loved the song "Sons of Summer" from Playing Possum. There is an old old Melissa Manchester song from a descent album, Home to Myself, called "Funny that Way" with these lyrics that I'm sure reference both Joni and Laura Nyro. Sorry but I only remember one little verse: Now I don't have the soul of Joni And I cannot picture myself like Miss Laura That's all I can remember. Also, does anyone have any info on Wendy Maharry, a singer songwriter who put out two great little records about 10 years ago? I am wondering if everyone that is coming to JoniFest New Orleans, are on the Joni2000 discussion list that Les set up for us???? If not please go to jmdl.com and join up as soon as possible. We have begun selecting songs and it seems like we are going to have an incredible list of performers and music played (like anybody doubted THAT). Here is a list (so far) of the music that will be performed live at the Howlin' Wolf on Sunday May 28, 2000: Here is the list of songs that will be performed as of today: Black Crow Big Yellow Taxi All I Want Little Green Both Sides Now Rainy Night House Circle Game Raised on Robbery Woodstock Paprika Plains For Free Chinese Cafe Amelia Hejira Just Like This Train Love Puts on A New Face Two Grey Rooms Man From Mars Down To You Harry's House Blue Motel Room Furry Sings The Blues We have had alot of people signing up lately so please don't be shy. Rumor has it that Pearl has been dusting off her guitar and getting callouses and chops back up. John Van Tiel is making a return appearance in the US by popular demand and there promises to be alot of surprises. I got Brian Blade's new CD Perceptual, earlier this week and it is incredible. Joni's song is really pretty and VERY different. Brian even sings the closing song on it. Longtime collaborator Jon Cowherd co produced the album with Brian and plays keys, Melvin Butler on saxes, Dave Easley on Pedal steel, Chris Thomas on bass, Myron Walden on sax and clarinet, Kurt Rosenwinkel joins the band on acoustic and electric guitars (this guy is incredible and has a real Pat Metheny sort of vibe happening). An last but not least Daniel Lanois plays guitar and pedal steel on the last two tracks. The street date for this record is April 11 and I highly recommend it. Hope everyone is well and have a great weekend. There is no way prefacing it as "only joking" makes it acceptable to me. For those who don't know me and for those whose nature it is to, as you say, read what they want, I have never and would never "track" Joni down to meet her. The thought of it sickens me. I was *invited* to meet her after the taping and encouraged by her friend in meeting her the second time at the public LACE event. Even then, it was a struggle for me to speak with her, but I wanted to be able to deliver a nice story back to the list. Dummy me, even that was criticized here by some people. As for my shuttling visiting JMDL'ers around the town to the haunts, that's normal L.A. hospitality, but in retrospect has probably been a very naive and foolish approach on my part that will most definitely discontinue. > J: Nothing really wrong with you at all, Kakki. You're just a big > brown-noser. I thought I was the only one that thought so, but Robbie said > the same thing. Gee, I should be so lucky to have ever gotten that close.
