Another is a picture described as Bonnie Raitt & Joni in Illinois. The woman id'd as Joni is actuall Rickie Lee Jones. Since I had a real, live person on the other end, I asked the question "So, what does this status message mean? Did BSN sell out at the Reprise site?" "Yes, it sold out of the initial suppy." Was his reply. Not being his department, he couldn't answer my next question...."Will there be promotional displays for the Limited Edition?" When I went to the record store to get BSN I asked if they were sent any promo posters for display. Nope! The record store guy figured Reprise is just waiting until the release of the standard CD issue to do all the display stuff. I admit to being in a minority, but DED is among my top two (HOSL is #1)favorite JM works. After a bit of a lull in my JM fascination, I fell in love with DED and JM all over again. Have stuck like glue since. Such a transitional work, IMHO. I liked the techno-rock quality overall, but the haunting sounds of "Ethiopia" and the joy of "Lucky Girl" really moved me. "Try Another" made me concurrently smile and grimace. Ever tried that? It hurts. I first heard DED on cassette on my Walkman while spending a day surfing at my boyhood beach of San Onofre, CA. Every time I go to "my secret place" there since, I think of our Lucky Girl and her DED. It kept me out of the water for most of the afternoon, a noteworthy reaction. I am not much of an expert in music - but know what I like and DED, in its entirety, is one of 'em. First of all, I was so saddened by a call I received from Leslie just after landing in LA about our dear Wally. He will live in my heart forever. I also arrived at his/our web site just after getting plugged into the net and I have been so grateful to him ever since. I have made so many wonderful friends on this list and have picked up my guitar with renewed enthusiasm and it all thanks to him and Les ( and of course the brilliant transcribers and chord/tuning gurus). I remember my first emails (before I was a part of the JMDL) with him during the writing contest for which I received a copy of the lyrics book (which is now in my lap with his inscription and signature in it). Even though I didn't win he made me feel so wonderful for participating in something (writing) that I'm not at all good at. (I guess that's why my posts are usually short and I sing mostly covers of other peoples music) My heart also goes out to Jim and Leslie and I pray for your quick healing. My condolences to us all for this is a time of grief for all of us. Secondly, to brighten up your day>>>>>I ran into Peter Erskine at NAMM and he told me he is going to be out on tour with Joni in the spring. He gave me a couple of dates that are tentative Atlanta May 17 and Miami May 19. I hope this means she will be willing to bring the tour to New Orleans (which is not yet on the schedule to be a part of JoniFest2000). I will be finding out more info about the tour tomorrow and will post asap. Peter said that it will be a large band and he seemed extremely excited about it. Unfortunately there were many fans of his trying to get his attention so we could not visit for very long. I also spoke to Jeff Pevar about coming and he told me he would be honored if he is not working (more on Jeff later). I have also confirmed the participation of Vicki Peterson (formally of the Bangles and now with the New Orleans based Continental Drifters) and possibly Susan Cowsill (also currently with the Drifters). Thirdly, I spoke to Leslie (who IS coming to New Orleans at the end of May, about doing a tribute/memorial to Wally as part of our celebration. I would appreciate any and all insight, suggestions, and participation on this effort as possible. A Case Of You & Both Sides Now are overwhelmingly beautiful! I was crying like a baby at the second hearing of each. I kept picturing Wally listening to them with Joni & I'm getting my keyboard wet right now.... This is unlike any album of standards done by a singer in several generations. Besides Stormy Weather & Joni's hits they are all obscure, laid-back classics. BSN is no Back To Broadway. The power of her voice has never been nor will ever be belting torch songs. I hear a vulnerable, relaxed strength. She has never sounded so, well....ripe....lush....welcoming....tranquil....utterly human! Answer Me, My Love, Comes Love & I Wish I Were In Love Again are my immediate favs. You're My Thrill doesn't quite thrill me yet but I'm sure it will one day. My cat Whiskers sure got into it! She's been hiding in the basement since October when we adopted a stray black Tom kitten, Howler. During A Case Of You, Whiskers came out of hiding & put on quite a show, rolling on the carpet having a good old time for the rest of the CD. As I write A Case Of You just started. Three minutes later I'm ON MY KNEES! PLEASE do another album like this with your greatest misses Joni!!! I can't remember when I've been this pleased. The Limited Edition is well worth it. The four lithos are treasures & this is the best box yet.... A couple of weeks ago, I visited CDNow via jonimitchell.com and ordered BSN - like many others, I received an email from them today letting me know it was on its way. Looking forward with a bit of trepidation now after reading about so many damaged packages and skipping CDs. However, I also ordered the Japanese Shadows and Light video, which arrived safe and sound today and was very thoroughly protected (via FedEx). (I've had a pirated copy for a couple of years, and figured it was about time I made an honest man out of myself ;-) Why this treasure remains out of print in North America is one of the music industry's more inscrutable mysteries. I ordered mine from Barnes and Noble after cancelling my original order with Reprise because their price was higher. I received it last Friday and I was also pretty disappointed with the packaging, not to mention the defective CD. It, too, had slipped around the inside of the box, was INCREDIBLY scratched up, and wouldn't play past Track 3. It's no wonder that the CD slipped around and got so scratched up (although I was surprised at how much!) since it just sits inside a shallow well without any cover or other material to secure it inside the box. The mauve moire box is pretty, but (and I really hate to say so) I was expecting something much nicer once I opened it. I agree that the cards with the song lyrics and the pictures should have come in some sort of envelope because they're loose-leaf -- very impractical, and they don't even have a special well to fit into inside the box. The pictures of Joni's paintings are nice to SEE, but they're more appropriate for tacking up on a bulletin board. I don't get what the package designers were thinking. (Was this Robbie Cavolina's baby? Thank god Kakki's out of the country right now, or she'd be building a bonfire for us heretics!) The hype for this was ridiculous compared to the product (IMHO) -- the only reason I'm ordering a replacement instead of just getting a refund and waiting for the standard, jewel-case issue is that Barnes and Noble had already screwed up my order so much that they gave me a huge credit and I'm paying very little for it. To think that Joni gave her blessing to this (and at $40 a pop) really has me scratching my head.
