That is, unless you you fancy the Norman Seeff swimming pool pictures. The folio features six additional full-color shots, all but one in gatefold size. My favorite has Joni broaching out of the water like a whale, which description sounds perhaps a little inelegant (which it is not!) but gets to the exuberance and beauty of the picture. >I happened to hear a great version of 'Cold Blue Steel' on a radio broadcast of Mountain Stage, a live folk show out of West Virginia. The singer was named Julie Adams, who I've not heard from before. It was excellent. I hear this program regularly on Boston's mostly-folk WUMB. If you area is deficient in folk/blues/Celtic/jazz programming you can get webcasts of WUMB from anywhere (even Tasmania!) All you need is a MP3 player (like MCAST for Mac @ $20)...I posted the address a while ago and if anyone wants help with locating this station on the web you can write me privately...or just go to http://www.wumb.org and get a demo player and instructions. >With all the Jonatha traffic lately I guess it would be ok to report my Jennifer Kimball experience...Yesterday I sat in on her two-hour harmony workshop at the recently launched Passim School of Music, above Club Passim. The workshop was subtitled 'How DO I find those notes?' There were about forty people crammed into a smallish room and while I was picturing a smaller gathering it was still very informative of Jenn's writing style, and great to spend that much time with her opening up to questions and comments about her work. I think all of her musical examples were taken from Veering From the Wave as opposed to Story songs. She said that was because she couldn't play them without rehearsing them, altho I think it's more to the point that she never played guitar back then. She played all her examples in 'double'd' tuning which departs from normal tuning only in that both E-strings are dropped. She capo'd up as far as the 6th and 7th fret. She suggested that guitarists can discover interesting and innovative sounds by playing normal chord shapes such as a first position A-minor or G in normal (Spanish) tuning in different fret positions while in alternate tunings, especially this one. She and several guitarists in the crowd completely trashed the notion of learning barre chords...which can be so daunting to beginning players...so feel freed of that! All references to Jonatha were kindly, and warmly respectful. They probably still exchange Christmas cards... She mentioned our Joan as a major influence for complex and unexpected voicings and rich backing harmonies. So, I should again recommend Veering From the Wave as an album I believe would probably appeal to Joni fans (with any money left after ordering BSN!) It has a definite Story feel - Ben Wittman production and great backing players like Duke Levine and Marc Schulman, and several Lucy Kaplansky backing vocals. Stephen ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2000 14:28:01 -0500 From: Richard Rice Subject: What's that she's playing? A thought in my mind while doing morning chores... Thanks to technology Joni can now 'play' bass on her guitar and oboe on her piano. She can take the tunings in places even she never imagined, extending the octave range wildly. Of course she will still only have the six notes to work with, but now she can put bass notes at the high end should she want and brilliant highs on the low end of the guitar. She can model the sound to an array of textures and tones. Which leads me to thinking, at what point do we start dropping 'guitar' and the old language of instrument playing and begin to say she is playing the VG8? It seems to me, as the technology continues to advance, we will loose these distinctions to a greater and greater degree. Even the sounds garnered in the studio move farther and farther away from the original source of an instrument vibrating the air from the human touch or mouth. I love the string drone of 'My Secret Place'. Alas the rich sound of her hand to the slack string will probably not take center stage in her music again. And even at that, the sound I am hearing is a product of over dubbing, so even there technology reigns. I suppose I should begin to go down this trail, since the music I hear the sound on is a computer interpreting magnetic bits. Oye. I'm not suggesting or lamenting change. Just wondering if those liner notes should be more honest and accurate about what instruments musicians are and will be playing in the coming years. In the end, it will still boil down to the talent and preceptiveness of the artist to engage us. To that end Joni could be playing a wash board and we would probably find much in it to engage our hearts and minds. Oooooh. A short post...didn't know I had it in me. John. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2000 22:07:51 +0100 From: "Peter Holmstedt" Subject: Plug Of The Week #2 Hi there, The Delevantes were for a couple of years my favorite Everly Brothers-type-of-band. They managed to do one great album for Rounder Records, as well as a great follow-up on Capitol Records. Late last year, brother Bob stepped out on his own with : Bob Delevante - Porchlight ( Relay Records ) As he'd already established on two fine records with his brother Mike, singer/songwriter Bob Delevante clearly understands the difference between "where you're from" and "where you're coming from". Growing up in Rutherford and, later, Hoboken, Delevante necessarily came by street smarts and a sharp eye for detail, but if his feet were planted on Jersey streets, his heart and head embraced the wider spaces and varied paces conjured up in myriad classic country, folk and rock'n'roll records. With "Porchlight", his solo debut on Relay Records, Bob Delevante continues to tap into a rich root-source of Americana. Flexing and stretching easily across a broad range of organic, time-honored musical styles, Delevante imbues each of the dozen tracks here with a relaxed - if hard won - wisdom leavened by knowing good humour. Producer Delevante augments his own distinctively plaintive vocals on several cuts, with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Jeff Black, Greg Trooper and brother Mike providing tasteful counterpoint. The rhythm section is in the highly capable hands of bass player Gerry Talent and drummer Bryan Owings. Delevantes blue-collar guitar and harmonica get ripping boosts from Kevin Gordon, Southside Johnny, Duane Jarvis, Mike Delevante, Buddy Miller, John Sieger and a few others throughout the disc. Copies of this beautiful album are available from : Relay Records PO Box 120501 Nashville TN 37212 U.S.A. He is the cat that did all the programming on the VG-8 and programmed all the tunings for Joni when she first got hers. He also made the trek with her to N.O. for the Jazz Fest show. He told me about hanging out at Joni's house during the process and about her chain smoking and her afternoon to early am work ethic. He also told me about switching patches for her while she was on stage with it the first time. It was a pleasure to meet such a talented guy and I am going to send him a copy of the Jazz Fest CD that he hasn't heard and we agreed to keep in touch. I will be seeing him again at the NAMM show in LA along with Kakki and Steve. Brian Blade was also in town to play with Joshua Redman for this Jazz educators show. I ran into Herbie Hancock and saw tons of great jazz players in their natural enviornment. Verve records was giving away hundreds of CD's and I got my fair share and picked a few for some other music sluts I know. Later ya'll. I was just thinking the other day how much of TTT was overlooked in the swirl, blur and over-hungry expectation surrounding its' release in 1998. Joni albums often do not even grab her most ardent fans on the first listens, but then some of us wake up a few years down the road and go "ahhhhhhh."
