Yeats' "The Second Coming" really deserves to be played loud! I've been listening to this repeatedly and comparing it with the original poem. Not only has Joni managed to capture the amazing power and imagery of the original poem despite considerable reworking of the lyrics, but she has been able to reinforce that power and imagery with the amazing backing to the track. Her stunning vocals and exemplary guitar (I love Joni on Acoustic Guitar) on this track go to make this one of her finest works. If the answer is yes: could anyone send me a summary of it? If the answer is no: are you interested in starting one? It's just that I'd love to get to the very essence of its meaning. I've listened to what Joni says about this song in the Rock Masterclass inteview, I've read a few articles and reviews and still I have some difficulties. Everytime they give for granted that artifice, brutality and innnocence *are* the three great stimulants. As if it were the most natural of things. Is it? I read somewhere that Joni wanted to rework the poem as a woman's lament so she overlaid the backing vocals with other styles of singing so that she had an international sound in the chorus. If you play this REALLY LOUD on some sort of DTS type speaker thang, you get the full effect and you can hear (just!) the African and the Javanese voices that she tries to emulate. I have only done this once on a friend's soundsystem. He wondered why I was sitting in his living room stunned into silence. I'm not sure what knowing this does to people's understanding/appreciation of the song but the effect is great. Another tuning to get into the Jonisystem is the Hejira tuning (CGDFGC and variants) as the minors and majors are fairly easy shapes (eg 002200 for maj and 002100 for minor), and then there are those lovely half barre and 555400 chords that are great. I might go home tonight and have a quick diddle on my guitar. Will update. - ---------- (I read somewhere that Joni has worked out 'a system' of around fifty tunings, which sounds like an organised project.) I don't think it was a project as such. In 1985, according to the rockmasterclass i/v she had 30 tunings. In later, post TI i/v's, she mentions having over 50! They just grow and grow the more she experiments. The VG-8 is, of course, the best thing for experimentation as she can have low notes where her high strings are meant to be and vice versa, producing even 'weirder' chords and progressions. As a note, she has more tunings than ever as she now has to sing things a little lower than before and has to tune things a little lower. Much Joni Jamie Zoob ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jan 2000 11:16:01 -0500 From: Susan McNamara Subject: Re: real good for free Hi Martin: I find it fascinating that you brought up this topic today. The only Joni piano song I ever tabbed for guitar was Impossible Dreamer. Coincidentally I was playing it this morning. Although I have no clue how Joni transposed Woodstock into the S&L tuning here is how I did Impossible dreamer: The clearest way to figure out Joni's tunings is by getting the barre chord first. She also has a hook pattern in most of her songs. In the beginning intro of Impossible Dreamer there is a chord progression that translated easily into a barre chord progression on the guitar (if you've ever played People's Parties you know what I'm talking about). The chord progression starts at the 7th fret and goes up the fret board to the 6th and then the 2nd. So I figured out what chords Joni was using on the piano for that progression and then at first realized it was a D tuning and then played around with the strings until it sounded just like the piano chords. I came up with a wierd tuning: DAEGBD I thought it sounded pretty close although my version of Impossible Dreamer is a little slower and more moody than Joni's from DED. Something amazing happened while I was doing this. I started to hear another song. It drove me CRAZY for two weeks trying to figure out what song the guitar version sounded like. Then it dawned on me when I remembered someone saying that Joni wrote Impossible Dreamer about John Lennon. The chords exactly fit the song #9 Dream off John's album Shaved Fish, which is one of my all time favorites. So I tabbed that song in the same tuning. I usually play them together one right after another. (if you are interested in the #9 tab, let me know). So I don't know if any of this made any sense to anyone but that's how it worked for me. You can look at the Impossible Dreamer chords here: http://www.jmdl.com/guitar/dogeatdog/impdream.tab You can also hear how I play it on A Tape of You, the first jmdl tribute tape. One of my future projects is to try and conjure the same type of tab for Shades of Scarlett Conquering. Does she hear the song in her head first and then work out a tuning or does she fool around on the guitar in a particular tuning and the song is born out of that? This may be a chicken-or-egg question - just wondering if anyone happens to know. I know for my part, if I hear music in my head and then try to reproduce it on the guitar or the keyboard, I lose track of what it sounds like - I don't have enough discipline to really "hear" it, then break it into its constituent parts to sound out the notes of a chord, and I don't have enough musical training to recognize chord formations either when I hear them. On the other hand, if I'm fooling around with the guitar and trying different chord sounds, I can sometimes create some kind of melody, but it always sounds much different than one that I would hear in my head first. Does this make any sense? Did this ever get >released? I just checked the Reprise web site the other day and it's due for release in a few months. >> Well, between this post and the "Slouching" posts, maybe it's time to tree up some more stuff...like: 1. Joni live in Vancouver, Canada 05/14/98, very nice set as follows: Night Ride Home Crazy Cries of Love Harry's House Slouching Towards Bethlehem Just Like This Train Black Crow Amelia Hejira Facelift Sex Kills Magdalene Laundries Moon at the Window Refuge of the Roads Big Yellow Taxi (Simon had previously treated us to "Refuge" on TT7. Here's the whole show, with the great version of "Slouching"...although if she closed with Woodstock, it's not included on the copy I have) And in the way of Tributes, if you don't wanna wait a couple of months, I have put together a Joni Tribute CD with some stuff I had laying around...it looks like this: Fairport Convention - Eastern Rain (1969) Fairport Convention - Marcie (1968) Fairport Convention - Chelsea Morning (1968) Fairport Convention - I Don't Know Where I stand (1968) Fairport Convention - Night In The City (1968) Fairport Convention - Woodstock (live/accapella, 1986) Tim Curry - Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire (Thanks Jimmy!) Caroline Lavelle - A Case of You Cleo Laine - Both Sides Now Cassandra Wilson - Black Crow Betty Buckley - River Betty Buckley - A Case of You Bonnie Raitt - That Song About the Midway Holly Cole - River Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Woodstock (alternative version from the box set) Phoebe Snow - A Case of You And last but CERTAINLY not least...for those of you who have "Unplugged & Jamming, Vol. 2", she does a song with Fred Neil "Searching for the Dolphins". Well, here's the rest of that show, or at least what I have...this one is awesome for us Hejira fans - it features Jaco and Bobbye Hall playing with Joni: Coyote Shadows and Light (This is Joni's alternative arrangement, like the one she plays on the unreleased Last Waltz set, except with Jaco) Jericho (ends with a three-minute Jaco solo - bass bombs galore!! Edith and the Kingpin Furry Sings The Blues Searching For the Dolphin (with Fred Neil) As if that wasn't enough, and it would be, Joni fans, there's enough room left on the CD for yet another benefit, so it's also included. It's the St. James benefit she played IN Quebec 04/15/73 and includes the following: For Free You Turn Me On (I'm A Radio) Big Yellow Taxi Woman of Heart and Mind Just Like This Train Both Sides Now As Peter H. would say, great music by a great artist!! :~) If you're interested in getting your very own CD copies of this stuff, send blank CD's accordingly to: Bob Muller 309 West Prentiss Ave. Greenville, SC 29605 NOTE: I'M BEGGIN 'YA...MAKE SURE YOUR DISCS SAY "MUSIC" OR "AUDIO" ON THEM. I guess this marries two of my loves, standards and Joni! An old boyfriend teased me because in the mid 80s all my records were BFVs (Black Female Vocalists). I was 22 and listening to Sarah Vaughn, Ella, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, etc. Strange for the time. I felt especially out of it recently at a "trivia night" at a local bar. I didn't know ANY of the bands in the '80s Rock' category! But I did pick Shirley Jones and Robert Preston out of a bad picture of them from "The Music Man!" And anyone has to wonder if I'm a Queen! I was listening to this in the car coming in to work this morning and was very moved by it. Certainly one of her finest moments. Just so very beautiful. It bears repeating, the woman is a genius.
