I received it a day or so ago and, from what I've been able to listen to, it is tremendous (quality not withstanding). Contact me off-list for details on how to get yours. Kakki wrote: >Also, I think no matter how mature a lady becomes, she always needs to retain a >bit of her inner-ingenue. That mirrors an impression I got from the part of the interview I listened to where Joni comes across as brilliant, opinionated, outspoken, but still somehow retaining a bit of youthful uncertainty. Hearing the few minutes that I have reminded me of why I fell in love with her 30 years ago. Deb said: << I don't know if we're voting, but as someone who has whined a lot about NJC, I would say that Jonifest stuff definitely belongs on the Joni list. >> I agree...to me, this one's a real no-brainer. The purpose of the Fests, IMO, is to meet and greet and talk and all, but the sharing of Joni's music is the true joy! Most of the JMDL fest posts discuss the renditions of Joni's songs. Why wouldn't that belong on the Only List? By the same token, if a fest post doesn't contain any such references (if you're talking about mosquito bites or something ;~D), the NJC should be added. Hell, it really doesn't matter to me, I like to see it all anyway! Bob NP: My son whining to get him to his B-ball game and I'm still in my robe! Yikes!! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Jan 2000 10:35:48 -0800 From: howard Subject: Tom Rush on NPR this morning, on Weekend Edition, Tom Rush was interviewed by Scott Simon. When asked what his most requested song was, Rush said, this time of year, Joni Mitchell's "Urge for Going". during the interview, he talked about how, in the early days, Joni approached him in Detroit and played for him--to explain how he found her music. He praised her lyrics as literary, among other things. Nice wakeup. Also, I got a surprise the other day from a friend, a belated Xmas gift. My friend is a concierge at a hotel in Chicago--the one where Joni stayed when she was in town in 98 for the Dylan tour. Apparently, my friend took great care of JM and her entourage and one of her people, Don McGee (I think), asked my friend if he wanted anything from JM--an autographed photo, whatever--and, after thinking about it, Richard asked for a photo, signed, and written to me. Richard made his request in a note. A year later, Richard got a package in the mail from Don, with the original note, and an apologetic "Better late than never?!?" and it was a signed photo of JM (not dedicated to me) which Richard had framed and gave to me the other day, along with the note, for Xmas. It's beautiful and sits among the photos of members of my family on my mantle. Howard M. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Jan 2000 09:07:50 PST From: "Russell Bowden" Subject: Warning!! (Grinning diabolically) Some of the sentences in this post may lack JC...but I doubt it. Hey, All, I am not sure if this has been discussed in posts of yore; but does anyone think that Louise (of Gail and Louise) might be Cherokee Louise? How many of the folks that Joni mentions by name in her songs are real or composed? Carol/WTRF, Sharon/H, Betsy/H,the aforementioned Gail and/or Louise/THOSL/NRH. So many of the people she has placed in her songs we already know to based on real people,eg. suspenders/J. Taylor. Rainy Night House/Oh, God I've forgotten, you know who I mean? Willie/LOTC,etc. Who has the poop on this?? This section I consider JC cause it is a defense of the Joni Only deal. I, too, find the Plug of the Week a major distraction...It's like having a commercial in the middle of a really good movie....The guitar/bass/extreme technical posts that SEEM TO GO ON FOREVER, with no JC irk the hell out of me, too. (I rarely rant on the list, so you can go to the next post or stick with me for another moment..Hey, this feels good!!) Last one: The seemingly never-ending posts about some Joni rip-off wailing. sorry-assed flash in the pan, 'artiste' If folks want to go to or start a new page/list...then please do it..and leave this list for Joni...for God's sake Mama, it has HER name on it, OK? I never realized I am such a Joni Facist... All claws now withdrawn. Love, Russ...Trembling and gleaming....ready for the riot ax Also apologizing in advance..no offense meant...my Mother always told me my sass would do me in, and she has been right on that...what can I say? Our cat is really glad to see us! I'm still off-list, but just wanted to check in quickly to say many thanks to Jamie for organizing the Jonifest, to Chris Marshall for bringing his bass and equipment along, to Jason, Jacky, Martin, Jerry, Azeem, and Rob, as well as Jamie's friends and Chris' friend Sarah, for being such attentive listeners, to Kevin (hope you are on the list by now) for giving me two additional songs to learn in the new year (he asked for Little Green and Free Man In Paris and I don't know them - sorry Kevin!), to Sarah for the spare train ticket, and to Azeem for the interesting conversation and music and providing a warm place to sleep after the fest so that I didn't have to try to get back home to south of London all alone late at night. It was really nice to meet people face to face and I hope to be able to meet you all again on another occasion. I was especially glad to meet Jamie, Azeem, Rob, and Jason, since I have corresponded on more than one occasion with all of them. It would have been nice to meet Colin, Rafaelle, Howard and other UK jimdlers. I know that Colin was busy with new puppies - hope things are going well Colin - and I heard from Azeem that Rafaelle was sick with the flu. Hope he's feeling better by now. I was glad that I at least got to see some pictures (at Azeem's house after the fest) of Colin and some of his beautiful animals so that I now have a face to go with the name and some idea of his work with animals. I also saw a picture of his handsome partner, John. The fest for me really started early in the day at Jamie's house where Jamie and Chris Marshall and I went through some of our repertoire to work out what we could play together in the evening. It was great fun! Chris Marshall is a truly outstanding bass player who was able to play the bass lines for Cotton Avenue, DJRD, Strange Boy, Don't Interrupt The Sorrow, Coyote and other songs that I don't remember now Jaco-perfectly. It was totally amazing to practice Cotton Avenue with him and have it come out the first time and it was truly a thrill overall to play Joni's music and hear it played with a live Jaco bassline - it sounds so different than playing alone - the bass really rounds out the sound - completes it. Jamie has a wonderful voice - very rich plus great projection - and his delivery was always heartfelt and sincere. He also plays a mean guitar - he has a very interesting strumming slapping technique and some quite original takes on Joni's songs whereas I tend towards verbatim, although, on the one song where I'm not so true to Joni's version, Coyote, I learned a few of Joni's details from Jamie. He also has songs in his repertoire that I don't do (especially Don't Interrupt The Sorrow which I feel inspired to learn now - - it has a very interesting set of chord progressions) so that when it came to the evening performance, we had a wide range of songs and had a nice balance, I felt, with some songs of both of us greatly/wonderfully/significantly enhanced by Chris on bass guitar. Jamie is also an excellent cook - he served us an amazing pasta dish - it had a sauce of blue cheese and mushrooms with an unexpected sprinkling of corriander on the top - it was really tasty (I think I will be experimenting in future with corriander in dishes where one would not normally expect it - quite a nice surprise combinations of flavors!). I really should close now. Still need to unpack. Our house is freezing - or nearly - the temperature was about 2 degrees Centigrade (35 F) when we arrived home - our heater went on the blink while we were gone. It is too slowly getting warmer - must be at least 8 degrees by now. :^( Hope everyone had a wonderful millennium celebration! Best wishes to all! It makes you feel...I feel like I'm going to cry just talking about it. When she starts playing 'Jingle Bells' as the song goes into this very melancholy, minor sort of thing—forget it. I get a lump in my throat. She makes you feel all the innocence that's inevitably lost as you go through life. I really believe that women have much easier access to their souls than men do. Because as men we're taught to wear masks, to drown our emotions in competition and making money. Now women are being forced to do that, too. But I just admire their capacity to bear their spirituality so much more deeply than men." Below the quote is a picture of Joni playing a black Parker Fly, she's wearing the straw hat so I guess maybe its from Woodstock. The same issue has Carlos Santana on the cover with a great overview/interview of his career and also what they claim is a "world-exclusive sit-down" with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
