Joni was also at the Club 47 on the 28th & 29th of April 1967, along with then-husband Chuck Mitchell. the recording 'in circulation' is NOT necessarily from one show. it's not a typical SetList and there are obvious breaks. i'm still working on filling in the missing details. some of this information is difficult after all these years. for now ~ take care, - ------- simon - ------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2000 22:16:59 -0800 From: simon@icu.com Subject: Joni may? perform again. Wayne & Herbie are graduates of the University of Miles! Davis, where Joni first encountered them whilst studying the music herself. Joni has always given one simple answer to the question ... "Who are your main influences?" she's always said "Lyrically-Bob Dylan Musically-Miles! Davis." "No Way!" i DO hope he's wrong, but doubt it. HE'D know. just in case ... I mean somebody like Tom Petty, you can buy any of his records and you're gonna get a good product, but there's not a lot of difference I can hear in them over a 25 year period. In a similar vein I have tried to direct folks who enjoyed XTC's "Apple Venus" to a similar sounding XTC record. They wouldn't necessarily like some of the band's other work just because they like this one, which is actually pretty atypical of their work. In introducing someone to Joni, the point is not what her songs "sound like" or what style she plays in, but rather that she is a musician and songwriter of unparalleled proportion. I'm just not sure you can do that with one record, although for someone who appreciates good songs, Hejira comes darn close. Also, I got my "Joni Mitchell Companion" today...so a big Catgirl "WHOO-HOO" from me! I've only thumbed through it, and am anxious to dig into it! Thanks again to Laura for the coupon - my copy was a mere $5.95!! Awesome! Stacy, are you going to be at the New Orleans Jonifest so we can get you to autograph our copies? Personally, I think Miles of Aisles would do pretty well. There's the catchy "pop" songs, then the more sombre songs like Woman of Heart and Mind and Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire, then the electric set with Jericho etc. - one of my favourites, even possibly vying for first place at the moment, although that changes on a weekly basis!
