I've only been on the list for two months or so and when I first listened in I thought "Why are these people telling each other all these things?" I'm still not sure why, but there's something about being a part of this community that seems to make people want to open up, including me and, believe me, I'm neither a joiner nor an open-upper (opener-up?). This will be a special Christmas for Susan and I this year because all three of our (combined) children will be here for Christmas Day, something that hasn't happened for over ten years. They're all in their early twenties and are usually off travelling or working or living elsewhere. When my son told me he was coming to Vancouver for the holiday he said he needed to be somewhere that people didn't fight as part of their Christmas tradition. My heart glowed. When I haven't been listening to, or playing Joni's music for the last thirty years, I've been writing little things of my own. I know I'm not in the same league, but nonetheless I'd like to share my latest offering with my fellow listers. I've finally gottten round to posting a rock opera I've been working on, on the Internet. It's called "Call His Name Emmanuel" and if you're interested you can find it at http://freespace.virgin.net/pete.sullivan/emmanuel.html I'm quite proud, and not in the least ashamed, of the fact that item 14 of my opus was influenced by Joni's "Conversation" chord progression. I wish I could have included something as good as "Slouching Toward Bethlehem", but then we're not all genii. I'm quite proud of item 18 though. Try it, tell me what you think. Merry Christmas to all Joni fans, and here's to a new millennium, and many more Joni albums. n.p. I apologize if this is old news, but I have not been able to keep up with postings, what with work, xmas, buying freeeze dried food and shotgun shells (ONLY kidding). Anyway, I found a story on Joni's painting and music in an audiophile (High End music and gear) type mag at Barnes and Noble. Jotted the name down. Lost it. Good news is that her name is on the cover (bottom half , I think), so browse! Better news is that it is respectful of her and her work. Be mindful that you need to go to a Big store as this is a minor mag you won't find at the grocery. 2. I want to not be so overtly up-front as the "Plug of the Week" offerings sometimes seem, so I guess this is just a "What I'm Listening To.." . Anyhow: I was in the dreaded Tower Records recently and saw a "Best of the Band II" disc in the bargain bin. (do not ignore this bin-I got all of my Joni HDCDs there!!). I really wasn't expecting much, but in light of Rick Danko's demise and for only eight bucks and change... Well, if you are friends of The Band, this will warm your hearts a bit. (Joni connection: as contemporaries from the Golden Years of Music, Joni appeared in the group's final concert effort-"The Last Waltz" album and video. While not musically similar, they all drew from new sources and took music in exciting new directions.) This volume two of hits is actually drawn from the 90's output of the group. They got back together a year before their Hall of Fame induction in 1994 (?). They sound much like they always did, and that is a good thing. The famous Band harmonies are terrific, and the vocals on Dylan's "Forever Young" are great. So if your Tower Records puts out a similar bargain bin for us smart bottom feeders, this is a possible gem. Also, see Astrud Gilberto's disc on Verve in the bin. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Dec 1999 22:02:52 -0800 (PST) From: zapuppy2@webtv.net (Penny) Subject: Millennium Countdown #9 # 9 Elton John :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Grace dies when it becomes us verses them......Philip Yancey ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V1 #307 ****************************** The Song and Album Voting Booths are open!
