ONLY the "limited > edition" is coming out Feb 8. That's an interesting and kind of strange marketing strategy - you'd think they would want to get the numbers up in sales right at the beginning by having both versions available at the same time, especially the less-expensive version that probably most people will buy. Maybe they want to build the expectation for it, or figure that we spend-happy boomers will go for the premium item right off. I wonder how "limited" the special edition will be? I'm planning to try to get some information from Borders in Hollywood about how many they will be stocking (They always have these specials available). It wasn't even ready when we saw it last Wednesday and the guy has had the ad up for a couple days already. I checked his other auctions and he definitely has a large stock of rare CDs and albums for sale. I highly doubt it's an authorized promo copy - they are not even ready yet as far as I know. Mindboggling. I'm assuming that the lister who is bidding on it wants to take it off the "market". I think there must be a few homespun copies floating around out there because even Joni herself was asking several people if they'd heard it yet and how did they like it, but this is gross. But not to worry too much because if people do decide to make more CD-R copies who is really going to buy them - the real fans are going to want the real thing and don't mind waiting another few weeks for it. >> Well I want the REAL THING & will wait two more months for IT! But come Valentine's Day & no show, I will definitely buy it from eBay (if it's still available). What elates me is that Joni's new release is so highly anticipated that it's being bootlegged.... I'll still buy at least three CDs from Reprise for me & my friends because NOTHING is better than the *real thing*. Okay, perhaps this is because I'm waiting for the REAL paintings.... Is this on the JM Tribute CD? or on his own CD? I don't remember if the track they did based on "Don't Interrupt The Sorrow" has been mentioned here either. On the "Jesus Wept" album from 1995 there's a track called "Forever Damaged (The 96th)". The track is a about misdirected love: I know you'll always curse me but... All my love's in you I know forever's moonlight, so I can dream of something special Yes you'll always hurt me but... Much more infinite is my love for you Joni is credited as a writer, along with A. Cordes of PM Dawn. The track is built around a sample from the original Joni track. Recently I also got a promo 12" of their "The Ways Of The Wind". That's based on "I Had A King". The 12" has four mixes of the track. This track is on their second album from 1993. It looks like they have Joni included on most of their records, so I'm wondering if there are others by them we haven't discovered yet. Has anyone seen interviews by them where they mention Joni? - --jussi ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Dec 1999 06:34:19 -0500 From: Deb Messling Subject: Re: It's hit eBay.... My name is Peter and I'm a webmaster. (check out http://home.freeuk.net/swantheatre the one I do from home or http://www2.interchange.co.uk the one I do at work). My first encounter with Joni was in the summer of 68. I bought all my records at the Co-op Record department in Barnsley, Yorkshire, the old fashioned type of store with a listening booth. I was thumbing through the racks when I came across a very interesting album cover, the like of which I'd never seen before. As an Art student, it hit me right between the eyes, so I had to listen. I gave the album to the assistant and went into the booth with my girlfriend, Ann; we snuggled in the armchair and listened to the whole of STAS. Since then I've never looked back, although whatever happened to Ann. Joni went with me to college and I always managed to afford her latest works, even on a student's meagre pittance. My college friends bought me Blue for my 21st birthday. It's still my favourite. Now 30 odd years later, I still play Joni's albums all the time, mostly in the car on my way to and from work. It sets me up for the day, and helps me wind down at the end. A few questions: Where can I find the cookbook? I may want to contribute. Why has Joni not done anything symphonic, since Paprika Plains? Will we get to see her in the UK soon? I wrote these guitar questions to Marian and she suggested that I pose these to the group for more input. She suggested maybe Micheal Paz or Howard Wright would be able to help me out. Here goes: I taught myself how to play guitar many moons ago when I was in high school. Basically I memorized chords and learned how to finger pick. Later on I did take lessons for only a couple months and learned the basic notes of the first 3 frets. What I am wondering is how do you learn to play like Joni ......or like Eric Clapton? or James Taylor? Is there a method that you would recommend to learn? I used to try some of Joni's tunings that were in the old songbooks from For the Roses and I would use my parents piano to tune it. I guess what I am wondering is how do people who play on the really low frets know the notes? I recently bought a book for my son who is wanting to play electric guitar (like heavy metal....the kind of music I don't like at all!!!! (a teenager, don't you know!!! ) In the book that I purchased for him there was a grid of all the notes on all the frets. Do you know them all??? I always wanted to REALLY learn how to play. When a person does a guitar solo he is basically just playing the melody, the notes, and not chords, right? I know Joni is the exception to the rule too because not only does she play chords and melody but also rhythm too! I would love your feedback on these questions!!!! (If you don't mind!!!) Do you guys think that lessons are necessary? Or is there a book that you would recommend that would send me in the right direction?? Thanks for all your help! Interestingly, that trend has retirned, with most record stores offering "headphone booths" where you can check out tunes. << Joni went with me to college and I > always managed to afford her latest works, even on a student's meagre > pittance. >> Isn't this funny, and I can relate, that often I didn't have enough money for a decent meal (had to make do with a pack of nabs and water), or had to gas up the car a dollar at a time, but I ALWAYS had record money! :~) > A few questions: > Where can I find the cookbook? "quit the bootlegging! we're on to you!" i'm interested to see what kind of store it is. also, out of curiosity (i've never seen "e-bay") -- some people have written that it is one of "us" bidding, or a "lister" -- how is this known? isn't this how "we" get the material to dub and share with no profit being made? sorry for the ignorance -- although i have email, i don't get to the "web" that much. which is sort of a sore point today, since yesterday i caught one of my students plagiarizing (having downloaded entire paragraphs from a web site). i told them at the beginning of the semester that i don't know much about the internet, so i guess she felt free to take advantage of that! (little did she know i do, however, have plenty of talented and bored artist friends working office jobs who were more than happy to play "sleuth" for me.) ugh. it's an ugly and depressing incident and makes me feel weary about teaching in general... sorry for the rambling! - -- emily NP (the first time i've done a "NP"!!!): Laura Nyro, "Time and Love" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Dec 1999 06:04:12 PST From: "Raffaele Malanga" Subject: Dreams Hi everyone, I just thought of sharing this SJC with you. A few months ago I had a dream: I was in some sort of backstage trying to get close to Joni and when I managed she was very nice and she signed a CD cover or a book for me. Doing that, she pointed with the pen at the words "Kuala Lumpur" written on that book and she said to me "This is very important for you" (end of the dream). I was so disturbed and didn't have a clue of its meaning, so I told the dream to a friend (she didn't know about me being a Joni fan) and this is what she wrote me back: "I am not sure what Joni Mitchell symbolises for you. I know her music well, as I used to like her back in Israel. I guess she is from the loose seventies. She was quite a wall breaking woman, because before her there weren't so many experimentalist females. Let's agree that she is unique, and brave. and than she sends you away to a place you barely know anything about... You probably heard the name somewhere sometime ago, and in your dream you used it as a representation of an exotic "somewhere else", different from all the familiar sights you know. So a Brave idol is sending you to a new frontier saying- try it, or basically - be brave, go to unknown areas/places of your life...." I was very pleased by her reply, which also made me realise what people usually think about Joni Mitchell. Raffaele (in London) PS. I want to officially give my most sincere thanks to Bob M.
