HI, RUSS!! (growls of disapproval and some outright hostility?) As a long time Joni-addict, my momentary wavering has left me somewhat shaken and stirred.... When I saw Glenn Gould's name on the ballot (and why wouldn't he be, for God's sake??) I actually hesitated!!! What's wrong with me?? True, he didn't compose..but some adaptations of orchestral music to the piano...his brilliant radio work..and general eccentricness almost made me enter his name....then there was Gordon Lightfoot...I am queer for him....come to think of it..I'm queer anyway!! Oops! Rest assured, jovial neighbors, that I DID INDEED vote for our Queen...but there was that pause...that has rattled my foundation and brain........ If you have never seen it, please see '32 Short Films About Glenn Gould' or hear his complete Mozart sonatas for piano....un-be-LEEV-a-ble!!!! Thanks, I feel better now........guess I'm back to Step One...STAS. Errantly, with love, Russ When will there be a full length documentary about The Goddess, her life, music....it WOULD win an Oscar....by some film genius (are there any left?) I want one, now!!!!! Yes, for Joni, but I've been having some of the same wavering feelings as I've been listening faithfully to the Millennium Countdown. I didn't vote in that poll, btw. But listening this past week, there were three I would have seriously weighed their merits before casting a Joni vote over any one them....especially the first classical composer to make the list the day before Thanksgiving. Billie Holiday, Gerswin and Duke Ellington should have all finished higher too, imho. But all this leads me to a question. And I know these polls are not an exact science by any stretch, especially considering all the ballot stuffing people do for their personal favorites. But is it possible to be objective when rattling off the placement of the top 10 or 20 or more? I've found I have a tendency to discount people who are currently making contributions that didn't come onto the scene until after my childhood. I would probably always give the nod to the Billies, Basies, Gerswins, Bachs, etc. over the Stings, Madonnas, Eltons just because they were so etched into my psyche as musical giants from as far back as I can remember. I guess I'm asking if it's possible to be objective in a poll like this. BTW, I consider Joni to be included as already established by the time I started listening to her, like The Beatles, Dylan, Clapton, Joplin etc. Don't tell Joni, I said this, but I would certainly list Joni the highest of all the women artists, but I don't know if that would even be in, say the top five. Do other's besides Russell and I struggle with this? Is it possible to look past how much someone has meant to you, to objectively rate where they should rightfully stand in music history? Jazz musicians played Joni songs including a complete tribute to "Hejira". This concert, held in New York City's Central Park on Canada Day 1999 (July 1) was presented by the Canadian Consulate. This mini-tape tree is provided with text-only J-cards in the classic JMDL tape tree tradition. Also included is a photocopy of the 4 page program of the night's performance, complete with names of the musicians. I pick up the cost of the photocopies. On the third tape is Joni's appearance on an American radio prog- ram called "The World Cafe" from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA in 1994. In these 2 hours, you get a nice collection of Joni's hits from the album tracks. She talks about a new song, Yvette In English, and many other topics. You'll need to send cassettes and return postage (2) 110 minute cassettes (suggest Maxell XII-S or TDK SA-X) and (1) 120 minute cassette (Suggest Maxell , or TDK D, a Ferric tape but Ferric sounds just fine.) "If you want the tapes but want to work out another arrangement, e-mail me privately." np: Former Beatle Paul McCartney's best album since 1975, "RUN DEVIL RUN". - -- All the best, Jim L'Hommedieu ** Get well Wally! ** Tolerance, tolerance, tol... ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V1 #278 ****************************** The Song and Album Voting Booths are open!
