I've got this album and, though the Bakersfield concert would seem to have been part of the same tour, it doesn't appear on the list of track sources which are: Time Fades Away: Myriad Oklahoma City. Journey Through the Past: Public Hall, Cleveland. Yonder Stands the Sinner: Coliseum, Seattle. LA: Myriad, Oklahoma City. Love In Mind: Royce Hall, UCLA. Don't Be Denied: Coliseum, Phoenix. The Bridge: Memorial Auditorium, Sacramento. Last Dance: Sports Arena, San Diego. David Crosby and Graham Nash also appear on this album. Thanks again, Maurice. I am very grateful. I had to write Björk's biography for the radio station in which I work, and I found an article from Q in which Björk picks 10 records from her collection. "Hejira" was the #5. Björk's comment: "When I was 13, I got into Joni Mitchell with my dad, and played it to pieces. I loved 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter' but 'Hejira' was the one. It was more acoustic. I've always found guitars a bit difficult because my dad played since I was very little, and he was a bit of a Clapton and Hendrix kind of guitarist, and I've always been critical of that, but I loved her guitar sound very much, although it's very hard to say why. With hindsight, she was one of the first women I heard who weren't completely stupid. She had her own air of independence, whereas a lot of women just wanted to play men's music. I wasn't so much into her voice, more that she had her own world, with her own elements. You definitely knew that it was Joni the second you heard her. It was very strong, but very feminine, you know? It was natural and earthy but modern as well." I felt exactly the same way when I heard "Blue" a few years ago. Björk's music is very different from Joni's, but she has "her own air of independence" and "her own world with her own elements". In that sense, I think it's more appropiate and fair to Joni to compare her to Björk than it is to compare her to Cher or Madonna. IMHO. But a lot of people seem to think when Madonna does it she is somehow freeing us from our sexual hang-ups." It isn't sexually liberating and it doesn't free anyone from sexual hangups. It's kind of like little kids saying "poopoo kaka". I can see how someone might want to do this for the shock value, thinking that if they rub people's noses in it, they'll clue in and get over it. But IMO that rarely works - those whose noses would be rubbed in it are the last ones to get the point. I always wondered whether Madonna was trying to do a cheesy Mae West imitation (?) To her credit, I actually think Madonna has finally gotten over this now that she's a mother - at least, it appears that way, unless this is just another phase she's going through. She'll probably watch her kids like hawks once they reaching "dating" age. ;) Catherine (in Toronto) cateri@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1999 14:09:51 -0600 From: mann@chicagonet.net Subject: COUPONS! I am in the process of buying a house, not a simple affair. Parades of appraisers and estimators and realtors and insurance agents and termite people (who, like termites, come and go without ever really being seen). And they're all coming to a big event called "settlement." Settlement is next week, so I thought that, like weddings, I would be able to plan my own ceremony. Not so! You pay thousands of dollars and you don't even get to pick the music! I had thought I would bring my guitar and sing the "Circle Game," then maybe close the meeting by holding hands and singing Kum-Bah-Ya or something. But, what a bummer! The realtor told me that the title attorney requested that I NOT bring my guitar. What's worse, the attorney's office has no fireplace, so we won't be able to make S'Mores. The receptionist offered use of the microwave, but what the hell kind of S'Mores can you make in a microwave for crying out loud? So I offered to bring a big metal drum, but they won't let me because of some stupid ordinance about building open fires in the conference room. My attorney told me to get serious. I told her I was serious, that I wanted to have live music at my settlement. She was adamant. No guitar, no Kum-Bah-Ya, no S'Mores, no metal drum. So I asked her if I could bring a tape deck and play Joni Mitchell during settlement. "No Joni Mitchell," she said! What a Philistine! I swear, if I could afford to postpone settlement, I would find a new title attorney. It's the first time I ever heard anyone say "No Joni Mitchell." Any real estate people out there? Spread the word -- them's fighting words. No one would ever say that back in the 70s. I'm buying paint for the protest signs right after work... We're talking major grass roots action here.
