Like you say, some of those dulcimer songs are so exuberant and joyful, that's what makes the whole record work. It's what makes the sad songs seem stronger, I think. The same effect is conjured up in Me'Shell's "Bitter", a mix of sadness & joy... Joni's voice changed markedly after Blue, especially on HOSL. Although it sounded more like her voice on STAS. Was the voice change deliberate on her part? Or was it natural? I wouldn''t expect her to sing now like she does on Blue for example, but her voice change happened when she was still quite young. bw colin - -- "It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 11:06:41 -0500 From: Sue Subject: Re: Jazz legends in the flesh - Henricks & Ross at Jazz Alley (long) Mark, Thank you for your wonderful account of the meeting with Annie Ross and Jon Hendricks. That is what i have always thought. I think one can tell if someone is just 'going thru the motions.' I know when I sing, to myself at home, i am singing from within tho sometimes my feelings exceed my abiltiy.if I am singing in church, i often am just going thru the motions unless it is hymn/tune that moves me. > > > At the same time, when you have really good control and also have a natural > ability, you can deliberately alter your singing in order to sound different > than you might otherwise sound. My partner, who classicly trained as an opera singer(bass) but does not fllow it as a career, says the voice is an instrument and should be used and respected as such.I have noticed other singers voices change-except for carly simon whose voice has remained the same-it has always been mature and rich. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 17:14:50 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: "Joni's Jazz" tribute on Cassette- *Free* I'm offering to make dubs of what I call Tape Tree #7a. It includes the complete "Joni's Jazz" concert where jazz musicians played Joni songs including a complete tribute to "Hejira". This concert, held in New York City's Central Park on Canada Day 1999 (July 1) was presented by the Canadian Consulate. This mini-tape tree is provided with text-only J-cards in the classic JMDL tape tree tradition. Also included is a photocopy of the 4 page program, complete with names, of the night's perfor- mance. I pick up the cost of the photocopies. On the third tape is Joni's appearance on an American radio prog- ram called "The World Cafe" from Philedelphia, Pennsylvannia USA in 1994. In these 2 hours, you get a nice collection of Joni's hits from the album tracks. In the interviews, she talks about a new song, Yvette In English, and many other topics. You'll need to send cassettes and return postage (2) 110 minute cassettes (suggest Maxell XII-S or TDK SA-X) and (1) 120 minute cassette (Suggest Maxell D, a Ferric tape but Ferric sounds just fine). I went to Huntigdon to do one of my talks at the church. Although I had in mind what i would talk about, I decided I was going to play a couple of Joni tracks to get the talk off on the right lines and to get people to think and be interested. I chose tracks from TI, Sex Kills and The Sire of Sorrow, and one from DED. Now maybe those songs are depressing but the evening was not. far from it. I am left on real high as were may others. This lasted two and a half hours and none of us wanted to leave. There was one lady, in her 70's, who knew who joni was and in fact had her STAS when it first came out! Both the songs triggered thoughts in people and discussion about how we could lessen our fears and be more positive about ourselves and others. I have thought of doing it this way before, using Joni lyrics to stir the mind but this was the first time i did it. I am sure i will do it again. thanks Joni. - -- "It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 23:07:18 +0000 From: catman Subject: Joni voted top 20 Channel four is showing a music program for people of the millenium, voted on by the general public. Sometimes people are much more willing to listen to a song or watch a clip from a movie rather than just listen to someone talk. Yeah, right. The top 20 groups included Boyzone and Steps, top 20 albums included BOTH Robbie Williams efforts (ye Gods!). Still, in a climate that has my three least fave singers in the top 6, perhaps we should be grateful that Joni got a look-in at all. The top 20 female singers countdown looks like this: 20 Joni 19 Debbie Harry 18 Natalie Imbruglia (I am not making this up) 17 Janet Jackson (hyulp) 16 Billie Holiday 15 Dusty 14 Tina T 13 Cher (pur-lease - are you getting pissed off with my comments yet?) 12 Sheryl Crow 11 Lauren Hill 10 Bjork 9 Kate Bush 8 Annie Lennox 7 Alanis 6 Whitney Primadonna 5 Mariah Batcall 4 Ella 3 Celine Scaldedcat 2 Aretha 1 Madonna They just had Melanie C (the alleged Talented Spice), who did - to be fair - a passable rendition of Like A Prayer, and PJ Harvey doing her tribute to Dylan with a riveting rendition of "Shot of Love", a song I'd never heard. We move on with best male artist, and all I'll say about that is that Stevie Wonder and Neil Young don't make the top 20, whereas Ronan Keating, Bryan Adams and Will Smith do (Will's a good actor, can someone please persuade him to stop making records??), Marvin's at 11 and Robbie Williams is at 2. For the record, Elvis makes it at no. 1. And now, as we near midnight, the most influential musician top ten has just been run down, and apart from the ubiquitous and inevitable Robbie Bleedin' Williams, it's not too objectionable (which is not to say I agree with it!): 10 Bach 9 Dylan 8 Bowie 7 Mozart 6 Robbie Williams (That juxtaposition is at least worth a chuckle) 5 Paul McCartney 4 Jimi Hendrix 3 Michael Jackson 2 Elvis 1 John Lennon We're about to hear Macy Gray sing "With a Little Help From My Friends" as the finale. Hmm, not bad at all. Enough of this madness, I'm going out to a late night store to get myself a life...
