Andy Stancliffe wrote a few days ago and mentioned posting to defend a song that was being criticized, "like Ray's Dad's Cadillac or You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio". I don't understand - what could anyone say about You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio that is critical. IMHO that song is absolutely perfect - essence of Joni. I love it totally and completely. The genius and heart of Joni is in every word, in every sound of that track. Such a succinct insight into the human condition - this is truly Joni at her very, very best. I respect that others can and do have opinions different from mine, but I cannot imaging anyone finding fault with this fantastic work of art. What was this criticism? You have a singular ecstatic experience in your near future. Every time I think about that project, I'm awed by how much passionate energy and furious originality got to us from just two people (Joni & Jaco) and how outrageous and bold it was for her--as the rock celeb she was-- to step back and say to a bunch of percussionists few people had ever heard of--"Okay, cats, the next four (or whatever) minutes ON MY ALBUM belong to you." I guess this is a spooky thing to say but: we rightly spend a lot of time on JMDL wrestling with the neuroses and plain evil manifested among our species. Sometimes we simply wonder that humans can be capable of such things. There's another side to us, the glories we from time to time permit ourselves and DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER is one of those. I saw Stacey Earle at a small theatre here in Stockholm. Opening up for Stacey, and later joning her, was her husband Mark Stuart. Mark just released his first album in his own name : Mark Stuart - Songs From A Corner Stage ( Gearle Records ) Mark Stuart is a guitarist/singer/songwriter a la Tony Joe White or John Fogerty who manages to fuse rock and roll, blues, country and folk elements to something entirely his own. Especially his songwriting is up there with the best : Brother in law Steve Earle, John Hiatt, Bruce Cockburn etc. He has recorded and/or toured with artists such as Stacey Earle ( of course! ), Steve Earle, Jonell Mosser, Freddy Fender and lots of others. This is the second release on Stacey's and Mark's own label, Gearle Records. The first one was Stacey's brilliant debut "Simple Gearle" late last year. [i must have been so militant in those years!!!] he said he hadn't bought any of her cd's [YES, he was kind of cheap] but that he kept listening to the tapes that i had made for him when i was courting him [i would go all out in those years]. so i decided to give him all my duplicate joni cd's [the non hdcd ones]. i went over to his place [just for tea, ok?] and i presented him with this pile of mitchelliana. i saw my old tapes there -- everything from song to a seagull to hejira -- and i thought, "and the sex wasn't bad either!" so, jorge, if you've decided to subscribe and you're reading this, here's to our years together and to joni on her birthday! wallyk ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Nov 1999 20:51:52 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: JM screensaver 2nd edition now available what a cool, cool, cool screensaver!!! thanks charles. and i WILL translate "song for the pope" as i promised --- not that the rlj fans are holding their breath, i know. wallyk ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Nov 1999 19:18:52 -0500 From: Deb Messling Subject: Re: Rachmaninoff, Slurs, DRJD When I started my new job as a library director, I immediately bought Blue and Hejira for our collection. I think the use of "Tar Baby", especially after the verse about Columbus and Raleigh claiming the beach in the name of the suntan slaves is very effective in that here we have the colonizer laying claim to land, and then a few verses later we are slapped with the colonizer's language with Tar Baby. Hence, if we look at the song from a colonial standpoint, then the term exposes the value judgements of the colonizer. I think it is very effective, and not racist in the slightest. Rather, it's used as a good device to make you think "whoa, where is this coming from, and what do we do with it?", which it obviously has! Anyway, does that make any sense?
