This thread is SO beautiful! & SO true. DJRD is the album/CD I would hope was in my Walkman if stranded on a desert isle (hopefully with a solar battery recharger)! Yes I've previously said my choice would be S&L - because all my fav musicians play on it. But the more I listen & think about it, DJRD is my fav because it SO uniquely captures the essence of the late great 20th Century in such an intimate way. If I could only play Paprika Plains a few times before my batteries died I would be happy. Anyone who interprets ANYTHING on DJRD as racist is FAR TOO politically correct in my book. I think that we are simply offering up different awareness of words and what they mean and the power that they can punch - intended racist content or not. What consideration, if any, should an artist give to the meaning and history of words that they will use as the mortar and bricks of their creation? This thread has burped up a couple of memories for me that are relevant: I can remember sitting in church when I was about 8 years old and thinking about the line: "blessed be his holy name." And I wondered what if "his" name was something less awe inspiring like "Fred Flinstone," which morphed into what if the word for "dog" was really "cat." Who would care? And I reasoned that no one would care because people create the symbols that make the letters that make the words that hold the meaning. Fast forward and juxtapose that onto a conversation I had while serving a tiny stretch of time in a religious cult by the name of the Unification Church, (aka Moonies). Part of their dogma was that heaven would be realized here on earth once certain conditions were met and put in place. One of the hallmarks of this heaven would be the absence of slurs and words that damned and maimed. Not because they were banned or eradicated, but because we would all be "aware" of what and how we say things and strive to always speak with truth and love and kindness. I liked that idea, although it wasn't a lesson I was yet able to fully understand. I'm losing sight of my point here in the midst of my insomnia and churning heart, but I am driving at what seems for me to be the difficulty of making a point, creating art, illustrating a vision, provoking deeper thought and yet, at the same time, speaking with love and kindness and truth. Not an easy job. MG - off to root through the hall closet for spiritual Tums..... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Nov 1999 01:40:47 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Hendricks and Ross Review (definitely JC) Whoo and Hoohoo! What a great time tonight seeing Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross at the Catalina Bar & Grill!! I chose to go to the late show, just on the miniscule off-chance that She may decide to wander in for the show (I was prepared to ask her who "Tar Baby and the Great White Wonder" really were ;-) So, anyway, my friend and I arrive between shows and chat with the band for awhile. I learn that 3 of the 4 band members performed at Joni's Jazz last summer. They ask me if I was there and I say "no, but 20 of 'my friends' were there and I've heard the tape" ;-) My friend tells them that I really want to hear "Twisted" but they inform me that Annie performed it for the first set and would not be doing it on the second set ;-( So I go into my whole JM thang and stuff and they tell me to just yell it out during the set and maybe she'd sing it. One of the band member says wickedly "Oh yes, we know Twisted, it is Annie's Social Security Number" ;-D The lights dim, the show starts and out comes Jon and Annie. Our minds are blown - Joni is almost 80 and Annie is almost 70 and they both look and act at least 30 years younger. Annie especially could easily pass for a 40ish fashion model. (I say the spirit of music does it). They sing Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Joao Gilberto (ahhhhh...sigh.....) and Charlie Parker and then Annie shoos Jon off the stage and says "You know all you here were invited tonight as my special guests and I have a song just for you" and then looks right at me and smiles and launches into a perfect "Twisted"!!! (Well, Golly-be-darned and I didn't even have to yell it out) They were just amazing and I can't believe I had the chance to see these living legends perform on an off-night backstreet in Hollywood. Afterward they both came over to my table and we talked and I asked them to sign my Court & Spark CD cover by their song and they were incredibly sweet and just really darling. Jon said "you know we have the ONLY song on there that she didn't write" and I assured him I knew that. Annie went to talk with her friend and I talked awhile with Jon. I said they should get a website so we can keep track of where they are appearing and he said someone in the audience last night from JPL who helped put that explorer thing on Mars offered to create one for them. Told him I got the tapes of Joni's Jazz and he was astounded and all excited like a kid. Told him I'd make him some copies if he'd like and he immediately wrote out his address and phone number. Asked him if I should include an extra set for Annie and he said "ohhh yeah, when she finds out I have these she's gonna want a copy, too!" (Simon - if you are reading this and would like to present them with first edition mint copies, please let me know and I'll let you take over from here ;-) For you NoCal and Seattle-lites - they are coming to your neighborhoods in the next couple weeks. Sometime next week they will be at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA and the week of Nov. 18th they will be at the Jazz Alley in Seattle. I hope some of you get the chance to see them - they are wonderful. And I told them that more of "my friends" would be seeing them there. ;-) Kakki NP: Twisted - "I may have been only three but I was swingin" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Nov 1999 07:22:26 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Hendricks and Ross Review (definitely JC) In a message dated 11/4/99 3:41:48 AM US Central Standard Time, kakkib@att.net writes: << Told him I got the tapes of Joni's Jazz and he was astounded and all excited like a kid. How is Joni Mitchell know in Italy? I know that she visits there occassionally as she understands the Rennaissance Spirit that is there in the Arts. Much Joan Jamie Zubairi ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Nov 1999 12:28:18 -0000 From: Jamie Zubairi Subject: Dreamland. Discuss It is amazing the amount of post this thread has engendered. I am so glad that I brought it up (little pat on the back for myself). What is good about it is that (and someone brought this up) DJRD is still fresh to today's music IMHO. I mean Dylan of the same period or even contemporary artists of the same period can't get out of that 'disco' feel of 1977 (I'm not talking about Dylan, here of course), and yet this album has come into it's own right as a great album with its tangentials, themes, subject matter and and it's humour. Sure it doesn't sound like Massive Attack (apparently *the* sound of the late 90's ISO - in someone's opinion) but for a guitar based artist to have a unique sound and not sound dated is wonderful. She is a wizard. Listening to the music of DJRD and even just on a sonic level, it is complex and mindblowing IMHO, so far away from the folksy tinklings and plunkings of LOTC which people still to this day think of as the *classic* Joni sound. Don't get me wrong LOTC and especially Rainy Night House was my first initiation into the world of Joan but thankfully we have been able to move with her. I guess that's why we're fans. BTW talking about that 1977 'disco' feel, towards the end of the song DJRD when Joni sings 'You and I, you and I, You and I, Oh You and I!', is anyone reminded of Boney M? That may be the only part that places it in 1977 (he said, contradicting himself). But maybe the writers for Boney M liked that part and took it for themsleves. I dunno, just a lyric thing I guess. Just musing a little. With a cup of fresh "joe" from the Jolt and Bolt I find a seat and change tapes. As I take my first few sips, Danny Kapilian is introduced by an "old friend." Danny explains to us how rare it is that an album gets played, live, in its entirety, with the exception of Pink Floyd [and Frank Zappa] it just isn't done. Well, I sit back and ready myself to hear one of my all-time favorite albums played by this all-star cast that has already wowed me to no end. As he runs down the list of who's doing what I am, again, giggling with delight just thinking of the possibilities. Joy Askew sails with great mastery in to the endless miles of imagery in "Coyote." The road/Rhodes (sic/sick) scholar band as Joy’s vehicle hugs and conquers the kaleidoscopic terrain. Joy whips and wails her lines like broad strokes of a fine brush across this landscape ("...too far from the Bay of Fundy." - a musical eagle diving and catching a perfect note of a rainbow trout) that the band articulates every boulder, pebble, hill and valley so beautifully. John Kelly comes in to grace us once again with his high ethereal voice and the very brilliant Don Byron on bass clarinet is John’s perfect shadow on the ground as I fly into the clouds with "Amelia." The rest of the band dodge and dart in and out adding color, hue and form around this dance of Heaven and Earth. I am given the vision of being in a "bleak terrain" when suddenly a shadow passes over me. I look up to the sun to see a silver cross shooting across the cobalt sky. While the perfectly straight vapor trail delineates the plane’s path through the heavens, the shadow that is cast caresses and depicts every topographic distortion of the earth. This depiction of the dichotomy of heaven and earth by Kelly and Byron, through Joni's music and lyrics, unfold another layer of meaning in this song for me. John flies back in to the sun and Don slithers in to an arroyo and then up and over a mountain. Doug Weiselman and Don Byron set the stage of old Beale Street on Joni-tuned guitar and clarinet for Eric Anderson's dusty sunset voice to walk down in to "Furry Sings the Blues." This is a perfect match of talents. From the music, I can see the grain of the wood on Sweetie’s Snack Bar, the patina on Handy’s bronze statue, and Ben Perowsky on drums gives me the old glitter and "click of high heeled shoes. Eric treats every word with the same road weary wisdom that could only be old Fury channeling through Eric for a little self perspective. Don and Doug (maybe it’s Doug, but how could it be? Is it Don pulling a Roland Kirk trick on me? There are two clarinets winding around each other like Memphis mudwrestling snakes....?) jam the break with all the other things that Joni couldn’t put in her lyrics like bent playing cards, empty bottles, dirty ashtrays, fading, flaking photos, the smells and the tastes. I put down my coffee, pull out my wallet and take out the Mercury dime that I carry around with me....for some unknown reason. As I stare at this old forgotten currency and Furry's singing ends I think I know why I keep it, but I can’t say. Jane Siberry comes on stage to chat with us all. She would like it if Joni could come up and help her out with "A Strange Boy." Jane then picks out something that I find to be so true: that mournful, single note slide down on the word "alarm" in her song "Amelia." Yes, it is so sad and soothing at the same time, I would have to agree. With the first ring of a bell and tickle of the guitar I am ready for Jane's cute, aloof, flirting. The band builds a strange world of pops, clicks, layers and runs for this strange boy that Ms. Siberry is awkwardly, but perfectly courting. She runs through some lines, soars through others and sometimes stops to talk with the band, Joni and the crowd. I am left fascinated with this coupling. (What would the children look like?) Discuss Jamie said: "What is good about it is that (and someone brought this up) DJRD is still fresh to today's music IMHO." For me, it's REALLY fresh because somehow I missed out on this one and never bought it until a couple of months ago. I'm so glad I got it before this thread came up or I'd be totally lost. Maybe I speak from a prejudiced viewpoint when I say I agree with you 100% - however, going back and listening to some other stuff from that same time period, I feel safe in saying that the music, the lyrics, the whole thing (except for maybe the cover art, which isn't, IMO, one of her better ones) is truly fresh. And, is it just me, or does her voice sound really great in DJRD? I dunno, but to me, this is her best in terms of the quality of her singing voice. The girlish soprano is gone, there's a maturity there, but there's still a refreshing youthfulness and vigour to her signing - the vocal range and depth of expression is marvellous. Maybe it's just a phase I'm going through, but right now, this really is my favourite. (Give yerself another pat on the back, man!) Yes. Constantly. It's a hook that is one of the most poignant in her writing and the meaning changes throughout the song. Most of the time it's about the realisation that the love she experienced recently wasn't the real thing, a false alarm, IMHO. She starts off by leaving the meaning unexplained... 'It was the strings of my guitar, Amelia, It was just a false alarm' She then goes on to explain a little what she meant by that previous verse 'The drone of flying engines.... Your life becomes a travelogue of picture postcard charms Oh Amelia...etc' That she has felt her struggles have been a little fruitless up to now. The next verse she goes on to talk specifiaclly about an experience with Rolling Thunder where her music has been badly received by the audience and people just didn't get it. She thought she found a perfect way for her music, 'a paradise' but it was just a false alarm. Then the most accessible of verses is the one about the lover, 'I wish that he was here tonight..' and needs little explanation. The next verse is explaining to us to whom she is actually talking to. Amelia Earhardt (sp?) the pioneer aviator who went missing flying over (some ocean, help I can't remember details) and is compared to Icarus, trying to reach for the sun, getting the wax holding his wings together melted and so falls into the sea. A similee for trying to achieve greatness and getting scorched by it. 'Maybe I've never really loved, I guess that is the truth. I've spent the whole life in clouds at icy altitudes'. This verse and the next relates to the change in her music and voice. IMHO. In interviews she has said that she was criticised by audiences during this Rolling Thunder for not being able to relate to her audience, for having a voice that was so high that it was in clouds. It also is a double entendre saying that Clouds, the album, doesn't relate to herself or anyone anymore, that it was past it's prime and on to a new way. Hence,'I pulled into the CactusTree Motel' i.e. that period of her music was only a stepping stone, a stopping point, on a much longer journey. The dreams, dreams and false alarms were just dead ends where she would swing by but not dwell for long. Interesting to note that the audiences she refers to are usually prison audiences and deep south backroom bar venues where her music wouldn't have meant much to many. I remember reading it in a volume called Rock Lives. She seems to want to talk to Amelia as she feels some empathy with this woman, as if she needed to explain her position, sometimes with regret, sometimes with longing, sometimes with the need to move on. You did ask!! I hope this is able to help you along. Anyone else wanting to contribute is quite welcome. Some of this is conjecture. Some of this is piecing together interviews and albums and tours to find out what she meant. I'll stop lurking now! Hello Everyone on the JMDL! Happy Birthday a few days early Joni! Thank you! This is coming out day for me, (even tho' I've been out for years!) ;-) This lurker has revealed himself! So many of you have made me laugh with your wonderful posts, and stirred questions and made me ponder all-things-Joni, and shared so much that I feel I know some of you already. Often I have wished to be part of the group and discussions, although I am in spirit! Maybe it's time for some sharing of myself… Here is the Joni-facet of the diamond of my life… The first song that I heard of HERS was Big Yellow Taxi back in '70 and I was in 8th grade. I ran to get the 45 rpm-remember those? Later on my friend Kim in high school would send me her lyrics from Blue and FTR (in notes passed to me from three rows over,) and blow my mind when I compared them to Alice Cooper and Uriah Heep, which I loved. (I also loved Carly Simon and Carole King!) Then came actually hearing some Joni songs on tape… Of course, the first purchase was C&S… I wrote my first song when I was 17 and performed it at Senior Class Night, right before graduation. I had one year of piano when I was 10, and of course had the Joni piano teacher experience myself- didn't touch it for years, but ran back to it to play all the songs to C&S. Why didn't anyone else know or like JONI? She lead me to look inside myself; to be more observant and pay attention to detail and really start writing… A few months later came FTR and Blue, and then MOA was a Christmas present… I got all her lps retro about once a month- I needed time to absorb that voice and music and inspiration, and find my own… Back then I bought all her songbooks and got promo posters from the local music store, (and still do!). And I started writing more songs… Then I stumbled upon a dulcimer in a pawn shop. A few years later I ran into a luthier friend-of-a-friend, and he built me a Joellen Lapidus copy of the one Joni has in the Leonore Fliescher book… ( Can you say "trans-illumination"? or is that "fixation"?) And I started performing… The same with guitar; I still play Amelia… Oh Joni, it was just a false alarm… (I quit music to get a degree in Commercial Art… What was I thinking?) :-0 And I love sci-fi, films, plays and great people... What's my favorite Joni song or album? Depends on my mood! All the crazy you get from too much choice… how can you choose? Of course there are some special ones, like 2 Grey Rooms, which can move me to tears… There are many more Joni stories, but this is what I offer for now. Thanks to all the tape and CD trees, I've gotten more crazy! Special thanks to all that I've emailed privately- especially Jerry and Catgirl and Jimmy, who have made some of my intense searches for rarities come to a close… My 1st CD single was released about 2 months ago- this is for all the other songwriting JMDLer's out there, so I want to share some lyrics… Maybe see you in N'awlins? Talk to me! Steve P.S. Y'all shoulda been at Joni's Jazz in NYC. I think that's me yelling "We love you Joni!" on the tape... Cobalt Blue Now that love is gone You went back to him to carry on No lonely nights, or broken heart for you, for long How can I just be your friend? When all my hope for us did end I still want what I once knew... Now that your light has gone away I paint my life in shades of grey But my tears have their own hue... Cobalt Blue... As I rode by There he stood with you, and our eyes met- You had to hide So I walked in, alone, to say goodbye... How can I just be your friend? When it's love that I defend I still want what I once knew... I didn't dream your love would fade Painting my life in shades of grey But my tears have their own hue... Cobalt Blue... It's the only colour on the palette of my heart In a painting without you... Cobalt Blue... As I resist This urge to call I'm still longing, longing for your kiss... And for you to tell me, just tell me That I'm missed How can I just be your friend? A canvas torn; so hard to mend And you still want what you once knew... I'm just wondering if you could get a nice used (full sized) guitar for that amount of money. I have no idea... But if you're looking for something smaller, it's a great little guitar. And as always in a discussion of Joni's work, I think we're also talking very personally about ourselves (even if we never mention ourselves directly). Joni's never "out there" as far as I'm concerned, which is probably why I've listened to her for so many years. Any issue that Joni brings up, whether it's racism or icy altitudes or solid love is important only because I then question myself about the same issues. Sounds very self-centered, and it may be, but great art such as hers causes/helps the listener to look inside. Only then is the work truly alive. I think this is what Joni's getting at when she says (paraphrasing now): It's not important what I meant by it; what does it mean to you? Today when I picked up the mail, I had another billionth envelope from Publishers Clearing House saying for the millonth time that I am in the running for the $21 million prize. The thought seriously crossed my mind that if I won, I could buy more large cabinets to store my ever-burgeoning stacks of CDs and tapes. A few weeks ago Joni called Wally and asked him to come down and visit with her for a weekend, so Wally and his best friend, Jim, boarded a big silver bird and flew down to the city of the fallen angels. Joni was most gracious, sweet and caring. She played her new album for Wally and Jim, showed them her home, they shared several meals together, and much more. Wally brought some photographs with him to give Joni (including several of mine) and some other presents. Wally will soon post a more detailed version of their weekend together, including photos, but unfortunately, he's a bit ill right now so he's asked me to just pass on the word that Joni sends greetings to her Internet Community. Ms. Mitchell did not disappoint! More soon. Linda Worster, "Different From the Rest" - some of you lucky listers won this at the Jonifest raffle, I had to trade some Joni wampum for mine but I got an autographed copy - Whoo-Hoo! This is just an allaround excellent record, Linda sounds a lot like Carly Simon, only her voice is more tender-sounding. Lyrically, her songs are very strong, often very moving or sometimes very fun, like the title track that Gina wrote about a while back. And she throws a great John Hiatt cover in the mix too, an excellent take on his "Have a Little Faith In Me". I also have her previous release, "Moment to Moment", which is on an even keel, great songs, certainly a welcome addition to any collection that appreciates talented female singer-songwriters,and that includes all of us by default! :~) And since Linda is no longer a lurker, the next time she posts, let her know you're interested in getting your copies and have that Joni wampum (or other currency) ready! :~) 2. Victor Johnson, "Tangled" - This CD is really a gem! Obviously with a name like "waytoblu", you know Victor is going to be influenced by Nick Drake, but there's some great aternative tuning and some folk/jazz arrangements that are very tasty. Plus really cool artwork on it of tangled, twisted roots...I like this disc a lot, it might just sneak into my top 10 for '99...and Victor has shared his lyrics with us, so I don't have to add anything on that. As much as I enjoy the music on these discs, it saddens me that music of this quality isn't picked up and played on radio everywhere...these are records that make you glad you're a music fan! And hey, they're both only ONE degree from me! :~) Bob NP: Luther Allison, "Think With Your Heart" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Nov 1999 22:40:10 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Wally Visits Joni In a message dated 11/4/99 8:02:38 PM US Central Standard Time, stevem@cruzio.com writes: << Wally has asked me to pass on some information from him to you. >> Wow indeed...thanks for the "trailer" Leslie - I can't wait for the feature! I agree that the word was far outdated by 1975, but also believe she was once again using artistic license to make an ironic point. The house band was "affected" to begin with and because they didn't get the music to begin with, they were probably also so out of it that they were still using the term "Negro". That's how I've always seen that song - the two words go together as a metaphor for phony or "fake".
