Several artists in recent years have gone back and re-tooled and re-recorded their old songs in a new style or format - Jimmy Webb, the late Gene Clark, Jim Messina, Crosby with CPR to name a few. In every case, I've been completely blown away by these albums and the gorgeous new layers they have uncovered in the songs. When asked for requests, Tommy couldn't remember some of the words to his own songs, so she cheerfully sang them for him. We could so easily do the same for Joni, I'm thinking! This list contains accomplished musicians, recognized business professionals, caring humanitarians, and some of the most creative minds I've encountered in one place. The fact that we argue semantics or run a long tangent off a single line from a Joni Mitchell song puts us in the same category as all the other philosophers and scholars through the ages. We are discussing a body of work from one of the most gifted writers, musicians and artists of our era, after all. We have lives, and they are growing richer every day. She mentioned to me re-doing songs such as "Ludwig's Tune" with an orchestra." And Kakki responds: "I think this was the most exciting part of the latest news. Maybe it's a factor of age, more wisdom, life experience or maybe it comes down to what Pat just wrote about divine satisfaction in the very best sense of that term." This would be fabulous. There's something really neat about an artist going back to their old stuff, many years later, with a new approach as a more mature person. I know that Joni has said before that she wouldn't want to go back and do old stuff, but that was only a few years after the fact. When you go back to your youthful self some 20-25 years on, it takes on a whole new perspective. You see yourself almost as a different person - lends new meaning to "the child is father to the man" (or maybe it's the other way around here). I think of older artists like Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett, or, one of my faves, Rosemary Clooney's version of "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread" on the CD for "Midnight in the garden of good and evil". Somehow hearing an older person sing this song gives it a totally different meaning. Kind of completes a circle. Here's one old fool who hopes it really does happen.
