HOWEVER, I admire his ability to take fairly plain words, and only sligthly quirky chords and create some masterpieces. I was amazed when I first listened to the double live CD at how many 'standards' he's written. On the other hand, Joni sort of turns her guitar inside out, and writes (as we all know) the most poetic, imaginative lyrics of anyone. Because of this, I can understand someone feeling that her work has a certain studied quality to it. In Suzanne Vega's defense - I understand what she means, although I hope her criticism was not intended to be as harsh as it sounded. SV's lyrics have a fluidity that make them sound conversational - although I know that SV works very hard at crafting her lyrics (possibly more that Joni, even). SV's lyrics have a sort of rawness of repetition, whereas Joni chooses her words carefully so that each one has weight. Also, SV is more about rythmn - Joni is about melody. I admire them both, but Joni is so far above everyone else (but you knew that already). I'm 43, married, 1 cat (Michelle), and work at the UN in Geneva. I found Joni in 1972 when I dragged my boyfriend into a record store in Eugene, Oregon (Hi Russ!) in search of 'something by John Coltrane'. FTR was on. I still remember how it seeped in while I was browsing. Very seductive, isn't she? All of a sudden I felt possesed by this beautiful music I was hearing, so I turned to him and asked, "Who is that?" End of story. The next 'possession' was the first time I heard Joni's voice floating, diving, and lulling me on STAS. Maybe it was just her voice, maybe the combination of lyrics with dolfins, mermaids and periwinkle, but I felt like a warm waterfall was pouring over me. I was at a friends, I put on the headphones while he lit the candles & incence and I was transported. The rest were bought soon after, until I (sadly) got disconnected from my love of music. Happy to say I'm back on track, and it's largely because of this wonderful list. My name is Jan Glas, I live in Groningen, in The Netherlands. I am 41and make paintings. I became a member 30/09 this year. I became a joni devotee in 1977 when I bought my first Joni Mitchell LP "Hejira". And still "Amelia" moves me a lot. I saw Joni live in '82 or '83 in Den Haag [The Hague]. Good thing about this group is that I have to explain to no one why she is the musician most dearest to me. A lot of people think she was just and still is "a nervous blonde on an acoustic guitar", well, I am a nervous blonde too, that's why we hit it off. Next to Joni Mitchell the lieder [songs] of Franz Schubert are very dear to me. well I am in.... And a question! What are the other two albums that I dont have? I have the 18 and one (the live "Just Ice") but i read a couple off times that there are 20 around. And I read about tapes, videoos, actual meetings with Joni herself and other meetings, bad language between Joni and Rickey, I have a lot of catching up to do. I must say I already very much enjoyed the list. Every time I hear it, I think, "Wait a minute... what's wrong with this picture?" Then I scratch my head and forget all about it 'til I hear it again. Pure speculation here - maybe we're talking about a couple who doesn't have the "right" to be together in one of their homes. Maybe they're teenagers? Maybe one or t'other of them is married to someone else? Maybe they have to sneak off somewhere where no one is likely to bust in on them, so they go outside (to the train bridge)? But then, later, they go for apple pie together - in a public all night cafe. So, what gives? Maybe it's their idea of kinky sex? Was it in the film of "Cabaret" where the Liza Manelli character goes over to the trainbridge so she can scream as loud as possible while the train goes by just to get it out of her system - or was it another film? I dunno - I'm as confused as I was in the beginning. Jim then asks: "Am I cranky or not?" He was only familiar with Wally's site and mentioned how much he liked it. His eyes lit up when he mentioned Wally's name. For those who haven't caught it, Wally did an interview with Henry back in 1996 and it remains my favorite interview on his site. It's an L.A.-Laurel Canyon nostalgia thing on my part plus he does relate some very sweet Joni tales. He wanted to know if he could get to the discussion list through Wally's site and I told him that we are connected but that the JMDL also has its own most wonderful site created by Les Irvin. The official announcement of "Joni Fest 2000-New Orleans". I have been working hard trying to put the initial details of this extravaganza together. I will be hosting, along with some of my list mates, a tribute to Joni Mitchell New Orleans style the weekend of May 26-29, 2000. The celebration will officially begin on Friday and continue thru Memorial Day. The only actual plan at this time is a tribute concert at The Howlin Wolf on Sunday the 28th. This concert will be recorded with a remote multitrack truck and we will have a paid production crew so Chuck can just relax backstage before his performance and yes he will be doing a tango or two. I will be adding more details including a rehearsal dinner extrordinaire at my home as well as other events I will be working on with your help. The plan is a brunch and list member concert review in the afternoon on Sunday. That evening we will have a concert that will be open to the general public as well and be a fundraiser for the Ruth Paz Foundation (to help sick kids receive medical attention). There will be a VIP area for ALL list members and their guests. The artists who have agreed to perform so far are none other than Bryan Thomas and David Lahm. I have been working on other artists for this segment and will reserve special surprise guests TBA at a later date on our special list for the event: Subscribe and unsubscribe at http://www.jmdl.com/lists The posting address is I have arranged for special JMDL rates at a nearby pretty nice hotel (close to the concert venue and within crawling distance of the French Quarter, Mississippi River, Riverwalk, Downtown, or many other touristy type areas) at a rate of $99 per night. I will also announce this later this week on the sub-list. There will only be 70 rooms at this rate. It looks like my house is already filled with some of my friends that couldn't actually wait for the "official announcement", but I am considering the possibility of camping in my 1/4 acre yard that is sometimes a swamp. I am also searching for a "starving musicians motel" at a more modest rate. I wanted to write more and earlier in the evening, but my work schedule is interfering with my life so... I encourage you to join the Joni2000 list and be apart of the latest joy in my life. Also please email me privately if you are planning to attend to start getting a feel for how many people will be coming. I am SOOOO excited!
