I've always thought some of JT's lyrics/songs were a little banal maybe, but he has a knack of fitting a lyric to a tune that's pure genius, as MG said "he is an exquisite craftsman". One of my favourite songs, That Lonesome Road: If I had stopped to listen once or twice If I had closed my mouth and opened my eyes If I had cooled my head and warmed my heart I'd not be on this road tonight And of course "You Can Close Your Eyes". I also appreciated him far more after seeing him in concert (via TV, of course). He is a natural performer - not afraid to laugh at himself - I've never seen an audience more at ease, and a band having a better time on stage. Just my $.02 worth. Phil ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Oct 1999 19:35:24 GMT From: "Phil Klein" Subject: The Nation's (UK) Favourite Song Lyric (VLJC) This is from the Daily Telegraph, Saturday, 9th October: <<"THE words to Imagine, John Lennon's anthem to peace written after the break-up of the Beatles, have been voted the nation's favourite song lyrics. The song, released nine years before he was murdered in New York in 1980, came just ahead of Angels written for Robbie Williams, the former Take That star, and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, in voting by thousands of people by telephone and the BBC education website. It fought off competition from several Beatles classics, including Yesterday and I am the Walrus, which both appeared in the BBC's Top 10 poll. "Tracks from the Rolling Stones and The Who failed to make the top 50 and relative newcomers Massive Attack ranked higher than both Madonna and Michael Jackson." The poll, whose winner was announced last night by the actor Griff Rhys Jones, was conducted to commemorate the sixth National Poetry Day. The most surprising entry was John Otway who came in at number seven with Beware Of The Flowers. Otway, who had only one top 40 hit in his career spanning more than 20 years, beat social commentators and writers such as Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. Beware Of The Flowers was originally the B-side of his 1977 one and only hit, Cor Baby That's Really Free, which he recorded with Wild Willy Barratt. Otway said: "I can't believe I beat Bob Dylan. He's the greatest lyricist of all time - apart from me of course.">> The top ten votes were for: 1. John Lennon, Imagine (J. Lennon) 2. Robbie Williams, Angels (Williams and Chambers) 3. Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody (F. Mercury) 4. The Beatles, I am the Walrus (Lennon and McCartney) 5. Robbie Williams, Millennium (Williams, Chambers,Barry 6. The Beatles, Yesterday (Lennon and McCartney) 7. John Otway, Beware Of The Flowers (John Otway) 8. James, Sit Down (Booth/Glennie/Whelan/Gott) 9. Moody Blues, Nights In White Satin (Justin Hayward) 10. Hoagy Carmichael, Stardust (Hoagy Carmichael/Mitchell Parish) See? When we have a poll, we allow music by artists outside the UK. Bit similar to when we host an International sporting event, we allow other countries to participate, unlike the "world" series! (Actually, I do know that the origin of this was a newspaper called the (something) World, before anyone puts me right). So, John Otway a better lyricist than Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen or Joni, eh? Well, well, you learn something new every day. Phil ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Oct 1999 21:48:40 -0400 From: "Paul Castle" Subject: A&R Person of the Week! I can't tell you how much it would mean to me. >By the way, Scott sold me a lot of Joni items about 15 years ago. Wow! That's amazing! He did tell me a story about a Joni item and gave me permission to share it with the list. There has been video tape circulating for years called "Laurel Canyon Home Movies" which is very grainy and originally shot on 8 mm film. I'm sure you have it, Maurice. I got a copy from another listmember about a year ago and have shown it to the local SoCal group. It shows Crosby, Nash, Young, Dallas Taylor and many other 60s music notables at a party in a candle-lit room smoking a lot ;-) There are also some outdoor shots of Crosby's potted plants and lots of other stuff of some of them having a silly old time. There is Joni music playing in the background. I love this tape because it is so evocative of that place in time. Anyway, Scott told me the origin of it and it's a great story. There used to be a weekly swap meet in the parking lot of the Capitol Records building in Hollywood. Joni decided to clean out her garage and had called some guy to pick a bunch of stuff up and haul it away. This guy would usually turn around and sell the stuff at the swap meet. As he was going through it, he found this film and decided to hang onto it. Apparently he later sold copies of it and it circulated from there.
