I remember all the controversy over it when it came out, but even before I heard it I could only respect anything Joni chooses to do. "Sweet Sucker Dance" is one of my very favorite songs of all time. It just touches me deeply. It's nice to hear Joni sing jazz--she's so good! Anyway that's my 2 cents from a most-of-the- time "lurker". You may be right, I'd forgotten about that verse! But she could still be talking about her "childhood" - not in a literal sense, but in that she looked back and thought of herself as still a child emotionally, or mentally at that time. Remember the lines from Little Green - "Child with a child pretending" and "Call her Green for the children who have made her". The times are a little different - Kilauren was born in 1967 (?) and Joni appeared on Tapestry in 1970/71, and this is all conjecture (obviously) on my part, but it fits - at least in what passes for my brain at this late hour, it does! And I'm not trying to start up the Little Green thread again, I promise! I think I need to take a break and relax my brain - time for a ciggie and For The Roses (which I must get on CD ASAP)! Most importantly, all(?) of the HDCD's have a tiny framed HDCD logo on the back. All of the HDCD's have slightly different artwork compared to the regular CD's. They have been 'restored' to match the original LP design. The tiny text on the CD back mentions this ("repackaged by Robbie Cavolina"). All the back covers are slightly different to regular CD's. If you can open the CD case, the insert is not a booklet type of thing on the remasters but a folded, continuous piece of paper. Also, the spine of the HDCD case is not done with a standard label font, it follows the overall design - so they're all different (for example LOTC is written by hand). The Reprise HDCD's I have have all brown label (with the steam boat on top), the regulars have the print on clear surface. I'm in Europe but for some reason the Joni HDCD's I have are all American (probably imported). I have only seen one European HDCD, "Court & Spark". That had an identical insert/booklet to the regular CD. On the front there was a sticker mentioning it was HDCD - otherwise it looked just like the regular CD. Didn't see the disc. - --jussi ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 01:07:29 +0300 From: j.pukkila@pp.inet.fi Subject: Re: shutting down someone on ebay.... > >What Neil Young songs are on this and is it an import or CD recordables? I was away for a couple of days, but I'd still like to comment. Basically I think CDR's are risky, because the makers for these discs are ultimately there to make money and the satisfaction of their customer is secondary. As with all deals at eBay, problems can occur but with CDR makers buyers should be extra cautious. The quality of the disc (technical & musical) will always be a surprise, no matter how wonderful the CDR is described to be on the eBay page. I have reported two CDR sellers to eBay. One of them stole my money and with the other one the disc was unlistenable. I knew that eBay was having an 'anti-CDR' campaign at that time (about a year ago), so I simply reported these people as makers of 'infringing items' - the term eBay uses. Even today I regularly run into a cancelled auction every now and then - so they are still canceling CDR's. Because of my complaints (they might have been others), both of these sellers were blocked from doing business at eBay. Of course the seller can always get registered with a new e-mail, but for a few weeks I made my business to find them (as they kept selling the exact same items), reported them each time to eBay, who duly and fast (1-2 days) cancelled their new ID's - and the sellers eventually gave up. I also e-mailed every buyer that took part in their auctions, letting them know about my experiences. Many of them cancelled their bids and the final prizes of the auctions that were finalized (before the sellers got banned) dropped a great deal. I e-mailed to these addresses which I found at eBay and thought would be interested: buddyitems@ebay.com safeharbor@ebay.com ctywatch@ebay.com isanchez@ebay.com report@ebay.com Basically I CC'ed the same e-mail to them all. I think it's important you give them all the facts: the item number, the seller's ID and why you think the person should be banned or a particular auction cancelled, as briefly as possible. I don't know which of those addresses actually responded to my complaint, but the reply with the information that the seller had been blocked came from 'report'. >From 'buddyitems' I got a rather standard reply, but it has some useful information: >>If payment or product was sent to the user via the U.S. Postal Service, you may file Mail Fraud Charges. Please contact your local Post Office for more information. You might also want to review the information on their Web site page about Fraud on the Internet: http://www.usps.gov/dtf/19dtfinf.htm You may also file a fraud report with the National Fraud Information Center: http://www.fraud.org Once you have filed this report, please send a hard copy of the report to the following address. Copies of email sent to the National Fraud Information Center cannot be accpeted for legal reasons. Hard copies of their printable forms can be accepted. Make it to the attention of our Fraud Prevention Division: eBay, Inc. Attn: Fraud Prevention 2005 Hamilton Ave., Ste. 350 San Jose, CA 95125 eBay will then research the case and take appropriate action. In extreme cases, you may also want to consider contacting authorities in your area, as well as authorities in the area in which the seller resides.<< I have to admit that I have bought several CDR's from eBay, some of them at quite high prices and knowing that the seller makes an illegal profit - the mind is weak (or the heart)... But there are also more 'humaine' CDR sellers around. After I had won one auction, the seller sold me the CDR at the cost price. He probably also sold it to a lot of other people but at least he wasn't making a fortune in the process. So it's fair to say that I have a rather confused view towards CDR's... Anyway, I really think it's worth the few minutes it takes to report the baddest of these people. It worked for me. - --jussi ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 08:43:05 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@fluor.com Subject: Re: Happy Anniversary TTT Jimmy celebrates an anniversary: <> Yes, it was a good day...I went to Manifest, picked up 3 copies at lunchtime, and ended up giving one away spontaneously to a co-worker who was upset over a bad relationship. I was very serious with the sequencing and actually gave it A LOT of thought. (The Sequence I eventually committed to was about the eighth I wrote, there ARE some lines in each song that don't necessarily play into the sequence). WTRF is a great-sounding record, in the same way that Journey made good-sounding records. Now I'm not comparing Joni to Journey, obviously, (the slut has NO Journey) but this record should have been a much bigger hit. (Guess that could be said for ALL her records, but WTRF sounds like it was intentionally produced to put her back in the commercial spotlight.) << I played the hell out of it and even went through another cassette copy, but honestly, there has always been something about it that was "off" to me. I now really believe it *was* the sequencing because I love the songs individually but don't enjoy listening to the whole album itself all that much. Your sequence makes total sense to me both logically and musically and I would like to try taping it in your order sometime to see how it feels.>> I'd love to hear your thoughts after that happens...I may do it myself! <> You wink, Kakki, but there could be a rather large nugget of truth in what you say. Putting the songs out of a logical order would prevent people from linking them together and trying to assume things about Joni's personal life. Then again, Joni&Larry were at the "Stay In Touch" phase of their relationship here, so some of the songs might have been for Larry and some may have been addressing past relationships. Worst case scenario, it forces you to go back and pay attention to one of Joni's babies that doesn't get its fair share of attention... 'Blue Motel Room' I said. Go ahead. So from humming at the start of the scene, I end up singing it while I get changed. The editor of the piece was wondering what the hell I was singing during the editing (he must've heard it over and over again) cuz I end with the line 'Will you still love me.... when I get back to town?'
