(and introduction) Hi folks, I'm new and a Joni fan since the late 60's. I've read the articles about Kilauren and still have some info fresh in my mind, so here goes: At 08:27 PM 9/17/99 -0400, TerryM2442@aol.com wrote: >In a message dated 9/17/1999 4:47:35 PM Eastern Daylight Time, >cateri@hotmail.com writes: > ><< Do you think she would have made a > different plan for a baby?" > > I would say so. Joni >is/was a free spirit- a brilliant and creative person- who would have found >it very difficult to be tied down raising a child, regardless of her >financial situation. No judgment here, just my take on it. Joni talked about the paradox of being dirt poor and marrying Chuck Mitchell as a last ditch effort to keep "Kelly Dale Anderson, as she was named, while one year later having a record contract. She said, "How was I to know and to survive until that time?" in so many words. A friend of hers recalls when Joni met a couple with a four year old daughter. When they'd left, she said, "That could have been my daughter," so Kelly was forefront in her mind, even then. Joni talked about not having other children and that it had to do with the way that people were, I think she even said something along the lines of, "Everyone had that Peter Pan thing going." It seems clear that she would have kept Kelly had she been secure, but one or two months into the marriage with Mitchell, it became evident that it was not going to work. (What loveless marriage does?) At any rate, giving up her daughter seems to have perpetuated an incredible grief which likely contributed to her notable depth as a poet/songwriter. The woman is a genius, as far as I am concerned. Anyway, I am a parent, author, poet, editor and publisher and live in Upstate New York by way of New England. It's a case of "well I'd love to have, but my manager just never passed it on" etc. Copeland has been Sting's manager for a thousand years so he knows exactly how he operates. My respect for his (Sting's) talent has certainly been diluted by the number of appalling sound tracks and duets with dubious talents that he has participated in. And now turning down our Joan - what more can I say! >> How DARE he turn her down?!?!?! Well, it make me question his intelligence that is for sure! She has had some very interesting guest stars on her lps from the better the Sting, Peter Gabriel to the weird croonings of Willy Nelson. I hope that Sting was not involved in that decsion or tsk tsk on him!! I grew up and out of my teenaged angst listening to Joni. During my stint w/ the Moonies, I chose her songs as part of our after dinner circle sing, during the bleakest times of 1993 - 1994, her music was just about all that I listened to. I couldn't believe it when I heard it! Like you, I was busy folding laundry and overheard it. If I recall, I think that this cartoon comment began a thread about where Joni's lyrics have appeared in surprising places. -Julie ps Laura, I have yet to get that "firetalk" gear (microphone etc,) so we can chat via our computers. Will work on it this weekend. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V1 #195 ****************************** The Song and Album Voting Booths are open!
