How interesting. Is this a recording with Joni? A while back I wrote to Pete Seeger via his 'Appleseeds' column in Sing Out! magazine sending him a copy of a book I was involved in publishing - Poems on the Underground - an anthology of poetry posters displayed in London Underground trains. By return he sent me a copy of his book 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone - A Musical Autobiography' and a lovely postcard with one of his little hand drawings of a banjo on it (I treasure it - and subsequent cards he has sent me). In this wonderful treasury he writes: "Here's another of my favourites from the '60's. Joni Mitchell has written a string of extraordinary melodies. I first heard Joni's song [Both Sides Now] on a car radio, added a fourth verse suitable for my age, and got a nice letter from Joni permitting me to sing it. [NEW VERSE FOR AN OLDER PERSON TO SING] 4. Daughter, Daughter, don't you know You're not the first to feel just so But let me say before I go It's worth it anyway Someday we may all be surprised We'll wake and open up our eyes And then we all will realize The whole world feels this way We've all been living upside down And turned around with love unfound Until we turn and face the sun; Yes, all of us, everyone. Pete Seeger (1975) There is one other mention of Joni in the book. "If human civilization (and the biosphere) survives I think it will be partly because the feminine tradition of nurturing takes precedence over the male tradition of adventure, achievement, of power and glory. The '70's and '80's were a big education for me. And as a songwriter I was - and am - fascinated by the wealth of of great songs being made up by women - by wifes and mothers - by independent types and lesbians. I've told you about Malvina Reynolds. In my own family I've seen examples of strong independent-thinking women in several generations. Through Sing Out! magazine, through the People's Music Network and Clearwater folks. I learned the songs of Holly Near, Bernice Reagon, Cris Williamson, Pat Humphries, Joni Mitchell, Ysaye Barnwell, Ruth Pelham, Sis Cunningham, Gretchen Reed, Luci Murphy, and many others. Not just writing new songs, but rewriting old ones. I've sung their songs, and occasionally tried adding my own words, as you know." Pete Seeger (who was 80 earlier this year). (SJC) On BBC Radio 2 at the moment a well-known DJ over here, John Peel is currently doing a series on the 'History of Folk'. Last night's show mainly concentrated on Fairport Convention (from '68 up to Leige & Leif in '69). Mentioning Joni Mitchell's influence on the band with covers like 'Chelsea Morning' etc, he also included an interview with Nanci Griffith talking about the extraordinary effect for her, growing up way out on the plains of Texas, hearing Sandy Denny's voice for the first time. She said, "I think I was maybe 12 or 13 years old and I was out in West Texas on my Grandparent's farm, listening to FM radio, late at night. It was a voice that of course was very 'foreign' for me - it was so dark and just so incredible and totally unlike everything that had influenced me, from Buddy Holly and the Crickets to Woodie Guthrie. I mean it was 'totally' different and has just a special part in my heart. I think that's why, when I first turned onto Dolores Keane's music, it made such an impact on me because it reminded me of that moment of first hearing Sandy Denny's voice." As someone raised on a farm in a small Oxfordshire village, I just love it that this has been such a strong mutual experience - not only for Nanci from the plains of Texas, but for Ashara from the top fields of New England, John (from the libary in the mountains of Australia), Philip from the bay in Ireland and Catgirl from the wilds of Pensylvania , to name but a few. Based on what has been discussed on here recently, I was amused to hear Joe Boyd, their producer, say that he was rather alarmed when he first heard Sandy was joining the group. He said: "I knew Sandy and thought she would probably break them in half - she was a much stronger personality - they were all rather well-behaved, soft- spoken, polite suburban kids, and Sandy, although she was from a similar background, was a hard drinking, f-ing and blinding, loud voiced, rather 'outgoing' personality, to say the least. I had the feeling that I'd come into the dressing room and find them all cowering in the corner while Sandy threw beer bottles at them - or alarmed them with her scatalogical repartee. There 'was' an element of that in her relationship with them but what immediately 'cowed' her and turned her into a very docile and very co-operative and malleable person within the group, in my opinion, was Richard's [Thompson] talent - her realization that here was a guy who really was 'her' equal, if not more so!" Good to hear from you; actually, I have been pleasantly surprised, I got quite a few responses to that "Hilferuf" (= call for help); Chalkhills really is a great place. I will look into your recommendations! I probably should mention that Joni Mitchell and the Residents are the only bands that have drawn multiple responses thus far. I was hoping that a Joni Mitchell fan would reply, since "Hejira" is really excellent, one of the best 3-4 on my list. I (the ignorant) always thought Joni would be beyond me (she seems so cerebral)! Another recommendation that arrived here suggested: "Court & Spark"; "Blue" from the early period; "Summer Lawns" as the transitional album; decried her entire 80s output as mostly lame MOR pop, one or two good songs and a bunch of filler; "Night Ride Home" as her best album since the 70s What do you think of this list? (Interestingly, "Don Juan" was not mentioned.) The only Joni I had had so far was the CSNY cover of "Woodstock" and the (excellent, if you like that sort of thing) sampled bit on Janet Jackson's "Got Till It's Gone" (from that song about paving over paradise and putting in a parking lot). He has like five residences around L.A. and one of them is just two blocks from me in the old Metropolitan Water Building which was renovated for historic apartments a few years ago. He resides in William Mulholland's (think the movie "Chinatown") old penthouse. Pianist Fred Hersch, one of the true current greats, plays "My Old Man" on his recent solo album Let Yourself Go. It's brilliant and delicious, as is the whole album. His take on Joni's tune pays heed to both the lyricism and angular chromaticism of her melodic and harmonic genius. His choice of the tune is made even more delicious because he is openly gay ... "we don't need no piece of paper from city hall keeping us tied and true, my old man ..." Organist/pianist Larry Goldings covers "Woodstock" on his recent album, the title of which I don't know. He casts the tune in a setting reminiscent of Miles Davis seminal In A Silent Way period: organ, guitar, bass and drums ... spooky, spacy, and sensuous. Goldings cops Joni's vocal phrasing nuances better than anyone I've ever heard, down to the detail of the lyrics on subsequent verses. It's stellar. From Wally's report, I got that idea that it was Sting's manager Miles Copeland (Police drummer Stewart's brother) who attached the strings - -- Julie Larson didn't allude to having talked to Sting himself. And I find that very believeable. If you've seen Miles in action in the documentary/concert video "Bring on the Night," the words "kind of rude" do come to mind. (You also get the idea that Sting has a rather laissez faire arrangement with regard to his manager.) - --David ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Sep 1999 00:25:37 -0500 From: Scott and Jody Subject: Re: Joni Photo w/ Gold Scarf Dr. Sig wrote: > I vonder about ze gold scarf. I went to eBay and found that this photo was taken in 92. alot ;-( ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V1 #193 ****************************** The Song and Album Voting Booths are open!
