Joni is rerecording "A Case Of You" -my personal fave of the 'early' stuff. I am going to die slowly until the new album comes out. At least the tribute is going to tide me over. And if they come out at the same time, I will return to life quickly, listen to the albums and die happily in my sleep listening to the new "Both Sides, Now". I am 24 yr, living in Toronto and have been a diehard Ms. Mitchell addict for a year or so... Growing up in Canada, where Joni helped define the musical airwaves (due obviously to her talent, but nevertheless aided by Canadian Content musical regulations) I had a great deal of exposure to her better known hits....however when I heard "A Case of You" played a year ago, I did not fully realize the torrent of feelings and curiousity, that were ignited by her opening dulcimer notes. Consequently, I have diligently and delightfully paced through her canon and am currently revelling in the poetic reverberations of Hejira, without only one non-sequential detour through NRH on account of "Come In From the Cold", which is especially poignant." *wondering how this post ever got thought of as non-Joni...* an interesting and beautiful approach to her art. glad you decided to join in, regardless of the question. Joni Mitchell's better on her worst day (track) than most are on their best! in some manner or form the listers here (and you) are alike in our sensibilities. some may not dig her style... for some reason we do! *S* " Perhaps, it is a less than fortuitous omen though, that my initial message will be to the board, as a respond to the Nina Simone query, rather than a straight Joni comment..." no... I can see the connection... there is a soulfulness that is difficult to put into words... a depth. Nina is a gorgeous place to come from. from; "Mark or Travis" Can anyone give me a little perspective on Nina "Simone? I'm intrigued but not sure I want to buy a lot more or her music." " Before listening to Joni, I was totally enraptured by the uncompromising nature and often gritty musical genius of Nina Simone (who incidentally appreciates being referred to as Dr. Simone). Owning some 15 of her albums and collections, the best introductory album to her oeuvre IMHO would be the Verve Jazz Masters edition simply called "Nina Simone". While it is usually wise to steer away from "Best Of" sets, The Verve compliation contains very helpful liner notes as well as a great sampling of her songs, some written by her...such as Mississippi Goddam is uproariously potent and threatening or Love Me or Leave Me (not written by her, but deliciously updated by her) which is a magical blend of Bach and the small band sound...the album is positively bewitching, even though it does not contain a better version of "My baby Just Cares for Me" and lacks her anthemic "Young Gifted and Black"...." thanks SO much for that guidance/nudge! what an album!!! no, you're right on... healthy doses of Joni and Nina will keep the heart and mind stoked. that album with MOA & S&L . I just finished listening to love me or leave me after most of MOA and it's got me floating so high I can't get traction! thanks again. *S* pat NP: Black Is The Color... Well, now I'm back and I see that Ashara's event is coming REAL soon, and I promised to send caramel popcorn to help feed everyone. Well, Ashara sent me her street address before, but it got clobbered in the move, so, if anyone has her street address, please send it to me so that I can get some popcorn delivered to her home to feed the celebrants. thanks, scatterbrained, Loren.... Don tests his memory skills... <> Don, thanks to you I dreamt last night that Joni releases a brilliant poetic, jazz-infused yet genre-bending record in 2001, then several years later hooks up with Beck who convinces her to put out a sample-ridden, electronic piece of twaddle with good songs that get lost in the production. Needless to say, I woke in a pool of sweat! She happened to be on-line and sent it to me herself. But, now the sad news.....pardon me while I get down on my knees in an act of submission and sorrow....when I received the first message with her address, I called the popcorn folks to arrange a delivery. They reported that their preferred shipper (UPS) does not do overnight deliveries for them, and cannot quarantee overnight delivery, so they (Fisher's popcorn of Ocean City, MD) do not and will not make that promise. Ashara mentioned to me that unless I could get it there by tomorrow not to bother since she's chasing all of you outta her house on Sunday. So, Viginia, there will be no caramel popcorn from Loren at Ashara's celebration this year, the mighty Casey has struck out. However, a promise is a promise. Ashara, you cna expect a large tub of caramel popcorn to be delivered to your house for you and the boys to chomp and chew on. Sadly it won't arrive until after all of the party animals have departed (unless some of them hide and stay). So, to the rest of you, I humbly offer my heartfelt apologies for making a promise I couldn't keep. Usually, for me, a promise is a promise, and I don't like it when I break them. I'll be angry at myself all weekend for this goof up. I DO hate it when work interferes with life. I felt that I "owed" this to you all for helping me get through the days recently. I am fine, and getting on with life. humbly, filled with sorrow, and deeply annoyed at himself, Loren.....
