LOL, Wally!!! Heather ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 08:06:07 EDT From: MDESTE1@aol.com Subject: Re: Song to a Seagull (long) I dont think STAS was a "reflection" at all. STAS was her first album. Piecing things together about Joni at that time this album was her first "everything" in the music business. The fact that Stills plays on the album is an indication that she was heavily involved with experienced music people when she did this. I dont know all the particulars but Stills was involved in the making of the record itself so she was not alone. I think she met Crosby first. But the songs themselves are one of pure unadulterated wide eyed experience happening for the first time. She had been an emerging star in the mid west and the north midwest and had traveled a little bit but STAS is sure the first experience of living in New York and finding herself immersed in a whole scene. It is a meeting of the old country girl turning into the east coast sophisticate. many of the songs on this album reflect upon the good aspects of living in Chelsea and hanging around Greenwich Village and the whole music scene. Something has always said to me that Marcie is Joni. That she was writing about herself although someone could correct me with better knowledge. I picture her growing tired of the New York sceen and seeing herself reflected in a store window (maybe suddenly looking older to herself) in the rain and making the decision to go out west which she did. Nathan la Freneer, For Free, Dawntreader (obviously out all night), Night in the City, Cactus Tree (reflecting on the loves of her life up to then). All of these speak to the New York period. Hejira was a whole different thing. That album surely is a reflection on life itself. But STAS to me is Alice in Wonderland. Case of You is in the Misses songbook...is California in Hits? COY is "bagpipe" tuning - all strings tuned to the same note (try B) with the bass an octave down. I can play it, with a bit of advanced warning! AIW is also bagpipe, I believe. the other two should be Joni variations of the typical dulcimer Ionian mode (frequently D (bass) - A - A). I think Joni put the bass on the middle string, though. The dulcimer notation for Carey in Hits is missing a bunch of notes, but don't tell Ruth Barrett I said that. >RR, dusting off his dulcimer About time, Randy! :) ############################################################## Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA steve@psitech.com "The Tinker's Own" *NEW* website at: http://www.tinkersown.com "Southern California Dulcimer Heritage" http://members.aol.com/scdulcimer/ "The Living Tradition Concert Series" (Website soon!) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 08:50:51 -0700 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: Joni dulcimer tunings? The parts mentioned are adapted for guitar, but seem to work on the dulcimer. The tuning for All I Want is F#, G#, G# or in Jonilingo F#, 14, 0 (from Howard Wright). You can play it using the top 4 strings on guitar, either removing or avoiding the low E and A. Then call James Taylor for accompaniment! Now that the words and emotions related with these songs have touched my soul (surely you've touched mine, Joni) I skip over the other ones to hear these first. My take is that Joni is a lover of love, and of the pain that comes with it. She has always fancied the idea of having the husband and the family and the farm and would trade places with Sharon in a heartbeat (YOU sing for your friends and your family, I'LL watch green pastures by and by). The relationships she's had just haven't been what she needed to get her there. For Joni, love has been an emotion attached to an imaginary ideal-she truly beleives love is stimulated by illusion, more than anything. And even though it's a repetitious danger (at least according to her experience) she will continue to chase the White Lace. In Joni's early albums, she's Our Lady of Duality. Key example is "THe Last Time I Saw Richard". "You sing of love so sweet When ya' gonna get your self back on your feet?" In TTT's Harlem In Havana, she's singing more about one topic: Getting away with kicking up her kick pleat skirt, having fun. Is life becoming clearer as she embraces her cats and the comfort of her own home? Does the Road no longer hold-her/set-her-free as it did in the 1980's? As they say, "Discuss".
