I love the stop/go, red/green, autumn/summer references. Although it is primarily a bleak song, Joni's direct colour reference is abundant: Reds Greens Brown paper Yellow Cab Grey attics plus colours you can imagine - Coat of flowers Flower curtains Ocean beaches Bag of peaches In a previous post I mentioned that I "view" this song as a collection of black and white photographs. Perhaps it is more like those monochrome videos you see with a few colour images. Perhaps a metaphor for a drab, grey life with odd bits of colour thrown in. Interesting that Joni says she's the girl in all the songs. I've often wondered if Joni is Marlena in "Otis & Marlena". If so who is Otis? They were discussing the Apollo 11 space mission 30th Anniversary. One of the guests, Andrew Chaikin, author, "A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts" was telling of how the old Saturn V rockets are now laying on their sides abandoned and how sad it is. He said, and I'm paraphrasing, "Its like Joni Mitchell said, "don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got till its gone". Just thought you might find it amusing. Patti Haskins ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 08:50:01 -0700 From: Leslie Mixon Subject: Nina Simone My husband gave me a CD for my birthday entitled, "Nina Simone/"The Colpix Years." The liner notes read: "For over thirty years now, and still going strong, Nina Simone has stood above and apart from whatever calculated, cynical and contrived garbage that the commercial recording industry has spewed upon the public. Her neverending and tireless quest for quality in both her musical choices and her dramatic approach has, perhaps, kept her from becoming a star of the magnitude that her immense talent would suggest." The CD is terrific. My first thought after reading this was, "This could have been written about Joni!" Driving to work yesterday, turned on the radio and first song I heard was "You Turn Me On I'm A Radio" from Miles of Aisles. A few hours later on another local non-commercial station was the BBC version with James Taylor of "You Can Close Your Eyes." Rock on Santa Cruz!
