Lisa Peakes wrote: > > I have an old memory - incomplete information, of Joni saying one of the > trips of an artist is to have beautiful lovers - that's about all I can > recall - The following quote is from Tom Wolfe's _The Painted Word_ (a couple of paragraphs away from his definition of the Boho Dance): "The artist's payoff in this ritual [the art mating ritual, which includes the Boho Dance] is obvious enough. He stands to gain precisely what Freud says are the goals of the artist: fame, money, and beautiful lovers." Joni seems to have paid a lot of attention to what Wolfe had to say, although maybe she picked this up from reading Freud's writings directly. I don't agree with this quote, and maybe Joni doesn't either, but I can imagine her making a "beautiful lovers" comment and laughing. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 16:53:00 EDT From: WirlyPearl@aol.com Subject: Re: Hunter, The Good Samaritan In a message dated 7/13/99 4:05:38 PM Eastern Daylight Time, caseycm@cruzio.com writes: > > Have recently been listening to TT#2 through the gracious kindness of > Bob M., and the song "Hunter, The Good Samaritan" is making me a little > crazy. I knew the melody and most of the words and it just resonated with me as well. I had people doing searches for me trying to figure out who might have recorded it (i.e. Tom Rush or Gordon Lightfoot, etc. ) but no one could find the answer. It was driving me crazy...how did I know this song so well, when I supposedly only heard it for the first time. The answer came to me when I was looking through an early Joni songbook, The Music of Joni Mitchell, the one that has some of the unrecorded songs. There was Winter Lady in the contents with a little dot next to it. It was one of the songs I learned in my first year of playing guitar, probably around 1968. Perhaps something like this is true for you too. I'm not sure if The Good Samaritan is in there. I'd have to check. I can relate very well to the weird feelings you're having about not knowing how you could possibly know that song. And much to my surprise he has very good taste in music. I just like to know how he finds out about these guys. I mean does he meander the streets and radio stations of the world. There are allot of good musicians out there. Hmmm....never heard Howard Jones described as a techno artist before :-) Maybe in the US it was different, but the UK press never hailed anything he ever did wth four stars - two, more often than not. He's still out there making new music, though now a completely "organic" mixture of real instruments and he has a 3-piece band comprising Nick Beggs (ex kajagoogoo) on bass and chapman stick, Robin Boult (former Marillion session guitarist) and Kevin Wilkinson (ex-China Crisis sticksman). They are superb live. Forget the 80s image and all those "preconceived ideas" , it's great stuff. Magazine (vljc) Yet once again, Los Angeles Magazine mentions Joni in yet another article on Les Deux Cafes in the August issue, page 24. However, it seems the magazine has steadily built up the restraurant only to now turn on it (ah, the American way). This time it's an expose on Michelle Lamy's many business debts and lawsuits entitled "Les Debts Cafes" (ouch). Gee, I hope there are still fresh flowers on the table for our Ashara party in August! ;-) The Joni mention comes in the first sentence: "Her chic Hollywood eatery is filled nightly with the likes of Sharon Stone, Val Kilmer, Tom Ford, Cindy Crawford, Joni Mitchell and Madonna." The article concludes that Lamy is blase over the whole situation in "true Parisian" fashion and claims the disputes are resolved and that she is planning construction of another nightclub area on the property.
