I'm on a roll... Steve and Pearl (WirlyPearl on the list) were heading to Asheville NC from their home base in Fla and routed themselves through Greenville. I had previously met her at the Atlanta show last year so it was great to see her again. She had called when she hit the SC border so we knew we could expect them around suppertime - great, because we JMDLer's DO like to eat... They arrived ahead of time (just moving with the traffic Steve said) ,my wife Valerie had fixed a great meal of Mexican Chicken, rice, and a fabulous dessert. (Thanks Val) I had selected a shuffle of DJRD, Clouds, NRH, PWWAM, Lahm's "Jazz Takes", and The Hissing Demos. Pearl hadn't heard that yet so it was a real treat to be able to share that with another true fan. Like I said, the meal was great, and since they had already decided to spend the night in Greenville they were able to stay a good long while...but the time always goes so fast! She showed me all her photos from the West Coast get-togethers, Julie's party, Labor Day fest last year, and some other meetings as well (and I got to see her Twilight Zone cosmic Joni pics too, where apparently the camera captured Joni's aura...really eerie, but in a good way) Of course Pearl was the sweetie who took the photo of Joni and me last year so she's my special friend forever & ever!! And her husband Steve is as nice a guy as you ever want to meet, and a big Joni fan as well, although he's not on the list. I was certainly glad they took me up on my offer to be a stop on their way, hopefully they can swing back by on their way home! And Happy 4th of July to all, even if it's NOT a national holiday where you are... Box 903 Times Square Station New York, NY 10108 Email: info@guitarseminars.com or visit http://www.guitarseminars.com Woody Mann, Bob Brozman, John Cephas, Martin Simpson - 4 Renaissance men of blues guitar come together for an unprecedented seminar. The Acoustic Blues and Slide Guitar Workshop will be a week-long residential workshop for guitarists of varying levels to learn the techniques and repertoire of the masters of the finger-style acoustic blues and slide guitar styles. The 'Acoustic Blues and Slide Week' will offer group classes, workshops, faculty and student concerts, jam sessions, and special events. The days are structured to provide a focused program of study in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere. We expect participants from many countries to create an international community of musicians -- all living together and sharing the learning experience. Our common belief is that instrumental, vocal, and regional styles of traditional blues music are an ongoing art form that is an integral part of contemporary guitar vocabulary. Learning the history, sounds, and techniques provides not only a basis of understanding of today's guitar styles, but provides a basis for developing individual expression. All four core instructors are seasoned composers, performers, teachers, authors, and recording artists. These top caliber masters of blues guitar come from similar traditions, yet each has created his own body of original work, which is bringing acoustic blues into the next generation. The staff is completed with three music "instigators": Orville Johnson, Bob Tilling, and one more to be announced. All of our instigators are respected performers, recording artists, and teachers. Space will be limited to 70 students per seminar. There will be a limited number of scholarships available through the generosity and support of our friends at several companies. This will be an unforgettable week of relaxed learning and hours of unlimited jamming - the ideal guitar vacation For further information and to receive a detailed brochure, please contact us at the numbers listed above. Is it rock? Is it folk? Is it country? Is it pop? Yes! Tim Moyer is one of a new breed of singer/songwriters - middle of the road enough to a lot of different people, but, with a sound and identity all his own. He has crafted a gut-wrenching melodic style that is captivatingly familiar and lyrics that portray today's trials and tomorrow's triumphs. Tim is all about bridging gaps and sincerely expressing his life's truth. Tim has shared stages with Howard Jones, Edwin McCain, Nanci Griffith as well as Duncan Sheik, and Music Connection calls him " testerone's answer to Jewel " . His new album features 14 great original songs and a stellar cast of perfomers, including Greg Leisz, Dave Beyer, Debra Davis and Darcey Brooks. For references in the music, think of names like Anastasia & John, CPR, Doug Ingoldsby, Dana Pomfret and others. Man, I must become very forgiving when I love someone so much! I saw her on that tour, and I certainly don't remember SFS sounding so...well lets say....trying embarrassingly hard to be early eighties hip. I loved that concert, but the highlights that thankfully drowned out how she did SFS was adding the new line to Real Good For Free (the crowd went a-buzz!), a smoking version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine, and the fact that Joni spent a good deal of time at the piano. Does anybody else cringe when they hear SFS on the tapes from the 83 tour? I heard mention of a song that I was unfamiar with entitled, "Answer Me My Love." A friend called today thinking about one of his mother's favorite songs by Betty Hutton called, "It's Murder." I rummaged through my collection of 78 rpms hoping to find it. I was unsucessful with "It's Murder" but successfully stumbled upon a recording of "Answer Me My Love." Following are the lyrics, I can't wait to hear Joni sing it. I know it will put a lump in my throat and start the tears to flowing. It's amazing that with all Joni has been through, she remains romantic at the core. Answer Me My Love By Ronnel Deauville Performed by Lew Raymond & His Orchestra Answer me, oh my love Just what sin have I been guilty of Tell me how I can’t lose your love Please answer me, my love You were mine yesterday I believed that love was here to stay Won’t you tell me where I’ve gone astray Please answer me, my love If you’re happier without me I’ll try not to care But it you still think about me Please listen to my prayer You must know I’ve been true Won’t you say that we can start anew In my sorrow now I turn to you Please answer me, my love If you’re happier without me I’ll try not to care But it you still think about me Please listen to my prayer You must know I’ve been true Won’t you say that we can start anew In my sorrow now I turn to you Please answer me, my love Answer me my love Leslie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 10:44:50 +0800 (CST) From: Joseph Palis Subject: Re: Covers of Joni Songs. Asking howard the brit for permission. Can't wait to hear Howard's version of "Cold Blue Steel". Just as I would love to hear the versions of JMDLers of Joni's songs. Was there an attempt in the past to come up with a catalogue or a compilation of Joni's songs rendered by JMDLers? If there is, I am delirious to listen to it. Is something > like this already in the works? > > Hi all! Just got back from a nice week away at the lake, and being the backwards kinda guy I am, I started reading my digests backwards, and spotted our lovely Susan's post about a Canadian Jonifest 2000. As I said before, I live about an hour and a half north of S'toon, so it would be logistically impossible to do a big ole Jonifest at my place. However, I have received quite a few emails about the Joni at the Mendel exhibit, and since American money is like gold in Canada, I don't see why everyone doesn't just flock here for it! Once the Mendel date is announced I will post it, and if interested people let me know the dates they hope to be here, and a price range they are willing to spend on hotels, I can help with hotel arrangements, and plan some things to do, depending on people's interests. If there are enough interested people, we could maybe rent a conference or banquet room at a hotel or something. Or we could just bounce around the city aimlessly in search of Joni landmarks or something! Anyway, for whoever is interested in coming, let me know when the dates are announced so we can plan things. And, as Susan said, American money will get y'all a good deal here! I have been planning to make a long-awaited trip back to my childhood home in B.C. in the summer of 2000 and attend a conference on autobiography at UBC in July, but if the Mendel falls during that time, the hell with the conference! Evian ps. to all of those who emailed me so graciously about the TapeTrees, thanks, and sorry I haven't responded yet.... I have been gone for much of the past two weeks, and I am still trying to figure out how the hell to send a sase to the states since this dork woman at the post office confused the hell out of me and was talking about "international vouchers" and basically looked at me like I was nuts... lol, when I figure out what the hell to do, I will email y'all back, I promise! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Jul 1999 23:20:12 -0700 From: Susan Chaloner Subject: Re: Joni The Romantic Leslie Mixon wrote: > > I've been reading the exciting news of Joni's upcoming album of > standards with delight.
