McKee (grandmother) Angela asks ... >____________________________________________________________ >ALSO, who is Sadie J. McKee? Is there an interesting story >as to why this beautiful album was dedicated to her? > >Ange (always wondering) >____________________________________________________________ Ange, Mckee is Joni's mothers' maiden name. Sadie J. McKee is Joni's maternal grandmother, wife to James McKee. Joni has often credited her grandmother with instilling in her a love of music and also feels that her talent as a poet is an inheritance from Sadie. her grandmother played organ and was a classical musician. here's an excerpt from an interview with Timothy White. TW: The Andrews Sisters era, of course, was World War II and its aftermath, a period that's the setting for "The Tea Leaf Prophecy (Lay Down Your Arms) " on Chalk Mark. It's such a wistful song. Tell me about it. JM: That song began as a music track that Larry wrote. For the lyric, I kept thinking about World War II and my parents' courtship, which was unusual in a prophetic way. My mother had been a country schoolteacher, and she had come to the town of Regina in Saskatchewan to work in a bank. It was wartime, and nearly all the men in the town had been shipped overseas. So there weren't many prospects for her, and she was a good-looking woman, thirty years old--which was old for that time. There was a fancy hotel in that town that served high tea, and you had to wear hats and gloves in those days to get in. One day she and her girlfriend went over there just for the dress-up of it all. When they were finished, a gypsy came over and read her teacup and said, "You will be married within the month, and you will have a child within the year--and you'll die a long and agonizing death." The last part was a horrible and hideous thing for even a clairvoyant to tell anybody. My mother laughed in her face. She said, "This is ridiculous. Look at this town. There's no men left, just frail boys and babies." Two weeks went by, and a friend of a friend had a friend from out of town, and they put my mother and father together on a blind date and it was instant chemistry. My father had two weeks' leave. He said, "I know this is sudden Myrtle"--her name was Myrtle McKee; in the song it's Molly McKee--"but would you marry me?" So they ran off to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and got hitched. I was born within the year, and to this day she feels a little funny about the rest of the prophecy, considering the odds of the other parts coming true. She's seventy-six, and she's never been sick a day in her life. I mean, she's a real germ fighter because she's convinced it's a germ that's gonna knock her down. She does yoga, Tai Chi, cross-country skiing, and doesn't even have a quaver in her voice yet. I say to her, "Don't worry about the gypsy, Mom. Two out of three ain't bad." The gypsy got it wrong. It's me who's gonna die the long and agonizing death, with my bad habits. But I had to ask her, "What made you marry Dad? You were so picky." And she said, "Because he looked so cute in his uniform." So that's in the song too. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the book "Rock Lives" by Timothy White ~ Interview from March 17, 1988 - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- you can read the entire interview at the following URL: BTW: in this interview Joni also mentions that 'Killer Kyle' the soldier in her song "The Beat Of Black Wings" first appeared in another earlier song, "Cactus Tree" from STAS. Is there nothing else to discuss? Although Joni is the most prolific of female musicians our century has ever seen, her lyrics are the mainstay of her work. At least for me. I enjoy the analyses of her lyrics as one would dissect a poem, but it's odd that it always results in finding the sexual connotations. It was like that in my creative writing and poetry courses in school, and although briefly fascinating, there are deeper values in this woman's poetry. In all poetry. A good poet doesn't hide behind their words. There really is no point in trying to guess what person or situation Joni is insinuating through her lyrics, but rather the joy of poetry is in applying it to your own trials of life and RELATING to it. By the way, on the cover of BLUE....just what is that in Joni's mouth? Is it by any chance a...a... a penis?!? and maybe we can analyze the similarities between a microphone and a penis. And blue songs aren't like tatoos, they're more like....penises. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 10:05:55 EDT From: TerryM2442@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni's THING In a message dated 6/27/99 2:04:19 AM Eastern Daylight Time, ewwtaylor@adelphia.net writes: << "he picked up my scent on his fingers while he was watching the waitresses legs!" (1990?) well, I went to http://www.xpn.org/sections/world_cafe.html and wrote emails to them to see if they had cd's available of any of the stuff and their answer was that yes, indeed they made cd's but not for sale... they used them for fundraiser prizes and givaways and such... they went on to advise me that my local NPR station may have some just laying around... but they didn't. I didn't think of this until just now but if the 585 people on this list all went out and scoured their local NPR outlets, between us we might be able to come up with quite a bit of non-commercial, live Joni Mitchell just perfect for a tape tree! pat ps - this is the promo blurb on their hp: "Our signature program, now syndicated on 100 stations nationwide, the Cafe serves as sort of a microcosm of the XPN programming culture, Monday-Friday, 2 p.m.-7 p.m. Hosted with relaxed authority by native son David Dye, World Cafe has swiftly emerged as the premier radio showcase for new music by the foremost recording artists of the singer/songwriter era. In its nine years on the air, the Cafi has hosted live performances by pop icons like Joni Mitchell and David Bowie, introduced such new voices as Sheryl Crow, Paula Cole, Lucinda Williams, Joan Osborne, Fiona Apple and Jeb Loy Nichols, and showcased the work of genre-bending visionaries like Yo Yo Ma, Bobby McFerrin and John Zorn. I've come across a couple of such artists: Crofton Orr and Eugene Ruffolo are two of them. The third name is Debra Davis, who has released two stunning albums on her own label : "Uninvited Guests" ( D3 Records ) "Angels In The Attic" ( D3 Records ) Debra was discovered by Dave Beyer ( ex-drummer for Melissa Ethridge ) a couple of years ago. When Melissa Ethridge took a break from the music, Dave started recording and producing what was to become Debra Davis first album, "Uninvited Guests". The album was released in late 95 and reached #22 on the Gavin Americana Chart. Melissa Ethridge was very impressed by her former drummer's new discovery: "I was so impressed by the songwriting. Deb's voice sounded amazing, and she really connects with the audience. I was so touched by the music". Debra Davis is very hard to put down in a special field of music. There are elements of country, folk, rock and singer/songwriter in her music. Her voice and songwriting touch down somewhere between Shawn Colvin and Sheryl Crow. Deep, emotional songs. Her new album "Angels In The Attic" has just been released and the storytelling just follows where her first album ended a couple of years ago. The title track was recently featured in the TV show "Dawson's Creek" and the track "In Your Pocket" could very well be the song the shoots Debra all the way to super-stardom. Musicians on both releases are Dave Beyer, Nick Kirgo, JT Thomas, Mark Cross, Morris Tepper and others. If you're having trouble finding Debra's albums in your local record store, copies are available from : D3 Records 859 Hollywood Way, Ste. 330 Burbank CA 91505 U.S.A. I can now relate why Daniel Day Lewis, Robert De Niro or Emily Watson found it hard to let go of a role after a film because once it makes a habit of sticking with you, its hard to let go. But Julia Fordham's voice and music insinuated their ways to my system. She sings in that deep alto that makes her sound from Cleo Laine to Joni Mitchell by way of Annie Lennox. Her lyrics are particularly affecting in the same way Tracy Chapman's introspection makes one see a lot of colors, especially when the former sings of love lost, unrequited and disappointment. She sang "I Can't Help Myself" in that infernally high note. She ended her program with three encores: "Love Moves in Mysterious Ways, Someone to Watch Over Me" and Minnie Riperton's "Loving You" and once again she effortlessly reached that high note with ease. She did say she used to sing backing vocals to Kim Wilde (anyone with information on her?) and her main influence is Joni Mitchell. I was expecting her to belt out a Joni tune, but of her 17-song suite that evening she sang only three non-original songs. Stalk News: :) I was never that keen on seeking autograph, but that evening I was hopelessly drawn to Fordham's voice and her demeanor onstage and added to that, I am always of the opinion that singers who sing exactly like they do on CD are good because there was no technological trickery, no overdubbing, mixing, etc. I waited 2 hours after the show and when she came out I asked for her autograph and she complied and flashed me that killer smile. One week later, I am still in awe. :) Joseph (thinks that Gary Larson should do more cartoons) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 22:15:56 -0700 From: Susan Chaloner Subject: McBABE LOVES JONI... ...Pussy or no pussy ;~) I just love to watch her thread her threads, walk her walk, talk her talk and sing "Why do fools fall in love?"
