I don't mean to be knit-picky, I'm just trying to get at something: my Clouds LP does not have lyrics on the back, as you mention above and my CD copy does not have lyrics on the front. The lyrics are inside the album jacket foldout and inside the CD booklet respectively. Were you being exact in your locations of where the lyrics are? I'm just wondering if there are issues of both the CD and the LP which have snippets of lyrics on the front and back. It's probably a dumb question... Anyway, both my LP and my CD have printed lyrics which read: "...braiding wild flowers and leaves in my hair..." (where was my head?) Okay - my Clouds LP has lyrics on the BACK, as there is no jacket fold out on my copy.....the mystery unfolds? could it be the word "brown" was printed on these "non-fold-out" LP copies?? anyone anyone? And yes Gina, the lyrics in regards to the Clouds CD were inside the booklet..sorry for not making that clearer. Re recent discussion of 'political' singers and songs. It seems to me that the 'political' or 'protest' songs which survive as more than mementos of their time are those where the 'message' is presented less by 'in-your-face' sloganeering (no matter how effective at the time) and more by a subtle 'hiding' of it within the overall impact of the song. While Joni Mitchell may not be known as a 'political' or 'protest' singer, her work IMO has always possessed a powerfully implicit argument for a more civilised and humane society. And that is 'political' in the most enduring and relevant sense! Cheers, John. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 23:57:29 -0500 From: mann@chicagonet.net Subject: Joni's cats............literally! I know this was discussed before (long time ago) but I don't remember and can't find the posts. How many cats does Joni have? Was it three? And what are their names and colors, i.e..........the calico cat, etc. I appreciate anyones help with the info! Apparently they had some consultants come in who used a program that went through the system and automatically picked out titles based on key words that may indicate "suspect" or "inappropriate" content. Those emails were then automatically retrieved from the system for further perusal. They notified everyone of this *after* the fact, so feeling paranoid I went back through my emails to see what was in there. A couple of joke posts that were probably not exactly "proper" had been left in unscathed. But one post had been red-flagged and extracted - it was from a fellow listmember and titled "Photos of Joni". >> This is even worse than a piss test! If those photos of Joni had included the Mingus cover would you have been canned? Seriously, I now understand why some people objected to my sexy subject line & will try to refrain from now on. 1984! Of course this was not a scientific study but the consensus was that "pussy" is cute & anatomically descriptive. The slang they all agreed was truly offensive is "c_nt". Joni recently called rude audience members "drunk fucks" & one of my favorite lines she sings is: "he picked up my scent on his fingers while he was watching the waitresses legs!" This kind of blunt honesty is one of the countless things I admire about Joni & has definately rubbed off on me. AND, In the songbook * The Music of Joni Mitchell* from 1969, it says: Braiding fall flowers and leaves in my hair...So for the last 22 years of life I beleaved these words to be true. HOWEVER, on closer inspections (actually listening to the CD real close) I have discovered to my disbeleif that the words are *wildflowers*. In the book *Joni Mitchell: The Complete Poems and Lyrics it says" Braiding *wildflowers* and leaves in my hair. Here I thought I knew all these years only to find out the truth. WOW!!! I have never seen one that does not open. The words on the LP and the CD are the correct ones. For some reason in the songbooks they printed *fall flowers* which is why I always sang that. WOW! I can understand where all the other bootlegs came from. But where did this Hissing Demo come from? Isn't that kind of stuff usually the property of the studio and/or the artist? I mean, hopefully no JMDLer had to sleep with one of Joni's production people to get the tape out here to the rest of us. Although I'd venture a guess there would be several willing to cozy up to Joan to sweet talk *her* out of it! Does anyone know the origin of this demo? Or is that stickly under wraps?
