But having read some of the fine posts in recent days, I got out some Joan and Joni and had a long listen. What I found was that, for me, Joan sort of takes me "outside" into the world so to speak. The stuff of hers I really like is from the Viet Nam War era, and when I listen to her records from then, I think and feel about the things that were very intensely affecting so many of us as a community. As I spent a very intense year-and-a-half battling the draft, I was very inspired by her and her hubby, David. She's very powerful. When I listen to my favorite Joni stuff, she takes me into my self more - - personal feelings re: love and loss and stuff like that - I go to places in myself that I normally wouldn't discuss with anyone else but there's Joni, tapping in, waking up those little memories long asleep, letting me know that SHE knows exactly how I have felt. She articulates those experiences/feelings much better than I can (did I need to say that?). BTW, I second Maurice's comments on Joans "One Day At A Time" LP and the "Sweet Sir Gallahad" cut - one of the sweetest songs I've ever heard. That one and "Love Song To A Stranger" from a subsequent LP but also from the Greatest Hits some folks have mentioned (which I mostly can't listen to). I merely inquired if someone had asked for your/our preferences before I presumed to state mine. >I assume everyone has web access. Then you assume wrong. Ever hear of Juno? Last evening, I had the immense pleasure of seeing Eleanor McEvoy perform for the very first time. I was joined by fellow Follower Helen Cassidy and fellow Joni Mitchell lister (now Eleanor fan) Bernadette Gallagher at Finnegan's Wake We got there early enough to secure a table, front and center. We wanted to make sure Eleanor knew we were there to see her, so I made a small sign for the table that said "Brian Greene [her webmaster] sent us." It was propped up at the end of the table closest to the stage along with my copies of all three of her cds. There was no way she was going to miss us ! The band came on just after 10 and started into the opening parts of Precious Little, and out of the shadows emerges Eleanor, wireless microphone in hand. She was right in front of us !! It was the start of a heavenly evening. The setlist is as follows: Precious Little - vocals - walking thru the audience Where Is The Healing - guitar and vocals Please Heart You're Killing Me - guitar and vocals - dedicated to "the internet group" Easy To Lose Hope - vocals only - dedicated to the memory of Veronica Geary Only A Woman's Heart - guitar and vocals Did You Tell Him - vocals The Fire Overhead - guitar and vocals, then she picked up her fiddle (she played with such intensity that I could see a clous of rosin dust flying off the bowstrings) She and the band left the stage to the thunderous applause of the medium sized crowd, then returned for an encore Leave Her Now - fiddle and vocals (and some of her fiddle playing was reminiscent of Joni Mitchell's frequent percussive playing of her guitar) After more applause, the crew came out and began to pack up the stage :-( Helen went over to talk to Liam from the band and managed to get all 3 of us invited upstairs to meet Eleanor and get some autographs and a photo opportunity. I can't wait to see Helen's photos ! Eleanor is the nicest person you could ever want to meet. She said her arm is almost good as new, and that it could have been much worse. Thank goodness it wasn't. She said she was going to dedicate a song at tonight's performance in New York to Susan Blackwell, just to see how many people would get it. (Remember, she was the Follower with the unfortunate autoresponder problem?) Eleanor told us she had been on WXPN radio that afternoon on "The World Cafe," where the standard procedure is to have the day's guest play 4 of her own songs and 1 cover. And wouldn't you know it - Eleanor said she played Joni Mitchell's Carey. My two favorite singer-songwriters linked that way! And Eleanor copied the web addresses from my SIQUOMB shirt and said she would ckeck out the Joni Mitchell sites! Cool beans, as my 14 year old daughter says !! All in all, a wonderful evening. If you have the chance to catch her show at Fiddlesticks in NYC tonight, by all means, do it! She is also performing at the NY Fleadh tomorrow. Punk and Disco (little JC and long) While bored at Jury Duty today I read through this week's L.A. Weekly and found several articles amazingly synchronomous to our recent art (outsider art is in) and music thread topics. This is officially-proclaimed "Music Week in L.A." and the Weekly supplement had a great article capsulizing the music of L.A. from the 1940s to present. Joni and Punk show up in the 70s. Here's some excerpts: "The 70s are revered/reviled as a kind of post-hippie, complacent/consumerist/ bad taste state of affairs for all concerned, and viewing the tapes now - cheesecloth shirts, shags, flares, muttonchop sideburns - that's an absolutely accurate assessment. Obviously the tumultuous '60s had knocked us for a loop, and we needed to get back to the country, or to Sherman Oaks. Remember the Eagles? Outsiders and insiders: We had Joni Mitchell here, too, a brilliant Canadian musician-poet with a gift for turning folk-derived music upside-down with new harmonies and daring warbles, a path that would lead her full-on into the realm of New Jazz and all manner of studio experimentalism. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young refined still further what was left of country music, riddling it with art-song voices sometimes reminiscent of the Lettermen. There was Rodney's English Disco, in 1972, where pseudo-British kids could cultivate their glittering rock fantasties, where visiting English lads could indulge their mum's-not-wathcing hooliganism, debauching with underage girls to the florid strains of Bowie, the Sweet and Roxy Music. By this time the Mothers of Invention were in full dark flower, Beefheart had shattered everything we thought we knew. Yet there came such a furiously complacent blanding-down in L.A. music, due largely to the swelling power of radio - rigid formats purveying rigidly played, smoothed-over music - and police pressure on club owners, and the general numbness that had come in retreat from the ominous vibes of the late 60s. Kim Fowley was still hanging around - he got us the Runaways, his half-glitter, half-protopunk girl band. We'd had enough thinking. And then it was time to dance: Disco reared its urban head, and most everyone applied the following sound to their records: sss-bump-sss-bump-sss-bump. Lines were drawn: you loved it or you hated it, never both, not yet. Disco became a scapegoat, especially when the Ramones in late 1976 and the next year the Sex Pistols and the Clash cued young L.A. punks to a new lifestyle of safety pins and torn jeans, sneers and spiky hair. Los Angeles seized hungrily on punk - in this palace of smashed dreams, it was a perfect fit. For the first time in eons, we actually had places to play, after years of clubs run as showcases for major-label aspirants, or as cover-band safe houses. There was the Masque, Madame Wong's, The Hong Kong Cafe, the ON Klub, the Music Machine, Cathay de Grande, Club Lingerie, Club 88, the Whisky, the Roxy, the Starwood - loads of mangy dives in which to vent and punch and spit. The scene produced its share of boneheads (the non-ironic kind), yet at its core seemed to undertsand the phenomenon's implications: The Screamers, the Germs, Nervous Gender, sort of like electric Abstract Expressionism, took punk entirely outside its original form and intent. The 70s? In L.A.? Extremes." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 00:10:44 EDT From: Dflahm@aol.com Subject: JAZZ TAKES ON JONI MITCHELL Arkadia Records told me yesterday that there will be an HMV booth on the grounds at the July 1 "Joni's Jazz" concert and it will be stocked with our CD.
